When comparing bonds that have BOTH 1) a different atom connected to the C, and 2) different orbitals/surrounding double/triple bonds, (both were covered in the video but not at the same time), how do you compare them? Ie., what of the two characteristics is more important? Ex: =C-I vs. [triple bond]C-H, comparing the C-I vs C-H bonds.

I have a problem, Doesn't the bond strength of HF reduces due to the electron density of fluorine and electron of the hydrogen since its the covalent radius between them is so small ? Thanks in advance
@bellefeu4933
@bellefeu4933 4 жыл бұрын
basically, the longer the bond, the easier it is to break. Think of raw spaghetti. A really long strand is easy to break, but a tiny tiny tiny strand is hard to break. Because Fluorine has a smaller electron shell density than Bromine, the Hydrogen can get closer to Fluorine, meaning the bond is shorter. Shorter bond = stronger bond. You can also think of two magnet poles. H+ and F-. When you get the two magnets closer to each other, the bond between them increases in strength.

Electronegativity can define esliye... As f is more el-ve than Br.. Therefore H will be attracked towards F

I’m confused. If as an atoms size decreases, its bond strength increases, then wouldn’t HBr logically have a stronger bond? The more electronegative an atom is, the closer its electrons are pulled to the nucleaus, and thus smaller, so since Br has more electrons than F, wouldn’t Br be smaller than F, and thus Br would have stronger and shorter bonds?

Your understanding about the groups and periods in periodic table is incorrect
@saram5659
@saram5659 4 жыл бұрын
Br is just a bigger atom than F. It has more electrons so they are in bigger shells around the core. The distance between the core of Br and the core of H are therefor further apart than the cores of F and H in F-H. And it takes less energy to break a shorter bond.

No bro In periodic table down the group atomic size increase. that's why Fluorine size is smaller than Bromine. And as fluorine's atomic size is smaller than Br it's electronegativity is higher than Br. Infact, fluorine electronegativity is highest in periodic table. even bond energy and bond strength of F is higher than Br coz as it's smaller in size it requires more energy to break it.

@etb_27
@etb_27 2 жыл бұрын
Assuming by 1s-1s that you mean sigma 1s-1s (ie: head on overlap) and 2p-2p meaning pi 2p-2p overlap (ie: overlap of unhybridized p orbitals, perpendicular to the plane in which the s orbital overlap would be).. ..then "1s-1s" would be stronger. An individual sigma bond is stronger than an individual pi bond
