I think that cognitive therapy is very interesting in many ways. I also believe that childhood experiences lead to the development of positive or negative core beliefs and that there is a relationship between behaviors, feelings, and thoughts. I am most interested in studying a client's cognitive distortions and maladaptive schemas. I feel that helping clients develop self-talk skills will be very powerful in motivating them to gradually alter distorted beliefs. An example could be when self-talk helps a client go through with a task, even if he believes it won't be successful. Over time, the client could develop new ways of thinking.

I agree that people should be aware of their schema, or their filters of how they view the world, and study the self by learning their own beliefs and automatic thoughts. And I really like the idea of self-talk, as I use it as an approach for myself when I experience anxiety in certain situations. However, I find it challenging to get motivated to actively practice on using these techniques in real life.

As a kid we discover our world and develop our mannerisms and habits and as we grow older, those behaviors change. As this presentation was being made, it was easy for me to see how the core beliefs, became thoughts (good or bad) and manifest themselves into feelings. It was also easy to understand that negative thoughts can become stressers. The important thing that stood out to me was schema. Schema provides the needed intervention, acts as the liason between those thoughts and feelings. It was also good to know that this therapy treats a wide range of mental disocrders even though it was not always successful.

This video was vital to my understanding of the various components of CT. More specifically, this video provided the utmost clarity regarding techniques to use within a session as well as the possible results of said techniques. Overall, this video was incredibly beneficial for me to watch, and I am positive that I will use this information going forward.

CBT hits the "nail on the head". When you change the maladaptive schema and the thoughts that support it you can change the behaviors. Great video!

+Barbara Hoffman I agree! I think if someone think negatively all the time they place a lot of stress themselves and create unhappiness. However, if that person can change the way they see things and think about things in a positive way, then their behaviors will follow.
@heather79278 жыл бұрын
+Barbara Hoffman I definitely think you make a strong point here. The thought process that an individual has can influence their life negatively and can promote negative behaviors that are involuntary. By adjusting the schema and working through the negative processes that were occurring, an individual can gain awareness and insight of the impact of their thought processes.
@charmainequarles58638 жыл бұрын
+Barbara Hoffman The hardest part is getting the person to change those maladaptive schemas. Some of that stuff is so embedded that it takes months maybe even years to get a person to see things differently. The book used and example of a man retiring after a successful career and being depressed because in his mind, people who don't work are lazy. That was a that he carried as a belief for 50+ years so I can only imagine how long it would take him to change that was of thinking.

I really enjoy this therapy. It makes a lot of sense when talking about certain behaviors, thoughts and feelings that develop for various reasons such as, childhood experiences, environment, etc. One technique that I really like with this therapy is identifying cognitive distortions which helps clients recognize where their thinking is inaccurate and helps promote positive and rational thoughts.
@johnharrisjr28086 жыл бұрын
Janice I also agree that identifying cognitive distortions helps the client to discover that their thinking is inaccurate. This gives the client to opportunity to reevaluate their irrational thoughts with positive ones.

The idea of childhood experiences leading to positive and negative core beliefs is something that I agree with. I believe that our childhood has a lot of influence over our though process. I tend to agree lean towards cognitive therapy when thinking about what therapy I will integrate into my own counseling style.

I really didn't want to drink the kool-aid when it comes to CT/CBT, but in reading and hearing more about its universality, I can see why so many helping professionals orient themselves in this direction. More specifically, I thoroughly enjoy the Socratic method, in where the therapist is able to challenge the client (and his/her maladaptive schemas) without confronting them. Self-talk is another technique that is applicable to so many clients and situations, and truly puts the client in the driver's seat beyond the therapy room. I do love me some responsibility assumption, and CT empowers the client to see more clearly.

+Kyara Panula I can also see why so many therapists incorporate the strategies of Cognitive Therapy into their method because it can be very helpful at turning maladaptive schemas into symptom free or symptomless outcomes. Self-talk, cognitive rehearsal, and evaluating evidence are all good techniques to assist in confronting maladaptive schemas.

I tend to agree with everyone else's comments. I like cognitive therapy because it is so applicable to interactions with so many different types of clients. I especially like the recognition of automatic thoughts, dysfunctional thoughts, and cognitive distortions. Sometimes, reframing a client's perspective is all it takes for a better outlook and functioning.

I love this style of therapy! While reading and looking at the video, I was realizing that this may be my style. I love the techniques that are used. The behavioral experiment is great because I believe that the mindset has an effect on everything else; if a person changes their thoughts and or actions than that can have an impact on their feelings. I also like the cognitive rehearsal technique where the client imagines a situation that could potentially cause them stress and works through it in a safe environment.
@pearlbutler93778 жыл бұрын
+Brittany Bell I'm with you Brittany. CBT seems to incorporate a strong therapeutic alliance which allows clients to address personal stressors in a safe environment. I think individuals are more likely to make changes if their strengths can be utilized in the steps they take to make changes.

+Brittany Bell I completely agree with your comment. I really do believe that mindset can really change our feelings and our actions also play into this as well. I think this style is very contemporary and easily applied to many counseling sessions and clients.

My experience was that core beliefs which were defined this way, were Pretty much unchangeable by therapy, because They had external reinforcements whicht strengthened them. But at the same time, other thoughts which could be called "core beliefs" like "how is the relationship between individual and Society?" or "what is a good Goal in life?" or "how to handle mortality" could be changed and could bring a lot of improvement to my life.

I too like cognitive therapy. It was this question of how can childhood experience effect the child as an adult, that led me to counseling. The automatic thoughts that lead to illness is interesting. The idea that this can effect someone long term is worth looking into.

It is my personal belief that CBT is a very effective type of therapy for clients who want to identify their negative thoughts in order to change/alter their maladaptive behaviors. I think therefore I am is basically what I say to myself almost everyday, so not only I will be aware of my thoughts towards others but most importantly I will be aware of the thoughts I have towards myself. It is very important to have positive self-talk especially everyday so that you reiterate reasons for why you like yourself, what you're good at, etc. I have always said it's you that has to live in your body, so you should want to make the best of it as you can.

Dr. Grande, thanks for your informative videos. I however wonder why you don't talk about acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT therapy) your take on this would be very interesting!
@lauraleslie42406 жыл бұрын
With CBT, pursuing exploration of maladaptive thoughts, schemas, and understanding their correlation to how one views themselves, it seems a more straightforward theory, as opposed to some of the other theories. However, when adding the dysfunctional component to these distorted thoughts, it is easy to see how we are all susceptible to believing and accepting the negative to be true. The real work lies in the techniques to overcome those negative thought patterns and recreate how one speaks to oneself in a healthy and positive manner.

I really liked this video on cognitive therapy, I feel like my style is very closely related to this theory. I enjoyed the last slide very much and hearing your opinion was very helpful. I like that cognitive therapy is very logical and straight forward and I think that it is easily relatable for clients. I also like the self talk portion because like you said it is something that the client controls and if you can reframe that self talk you can turn the negative into a positive.
@angiegrimes72658 жыл бұрын
+Scott Martin I also thought the self talk could be extremely useful by helping a client take control of the negative thoughts and replace them with a more positive one. I also found it interesting that by doing this repeatedly can actually change the intermediate and core beliefs of the client in a way to reduce or eliminate symptoms.

I have been educated about the existence of schemas already in psychology classes too. Timing is all so important when challenging a core belief. After a client has been given a poor prognosis for possible future longevity by that time for the most part it is often too late because of all of the overgeneralizations that have been told to them thus far by all of the authorities and experts they have encountered throughout their life. Which is not to say that the person suffering could not be consoled at all in counselling. What good is for example without any of your own diploma or degree when trying to help a sister to stop catastrophizing if all of the experts thus far in er life have been catastrophizing for her up until then? For example, what good is giving homework to a client who has already completed it in an over and above way already because she has not been catastrophizing hersef? The truth is that schemas in all of us human beings who still enjoy quality of life freedoms are dynamic in nature allowing for personal growth. For that reason some of the unhealhty processes mentioned that arise out of personal biases could be unconsious most of the time. Recording dreams can help change that. Dreams are part of automatic thought life are they not in that they happen while the brain is trying to find more connections that upon waking could make it easier for a patient recovering from an organic brain injury to discern what they need to discard out of their core beliefs. For example if a dream happens only once and is far fetched to the extreme that can help lead to insight about what core belief in unhealthy dichotomous thinking that may need to be discarded. If a dream nightmare happens over and over again and is not as far fetched it can lead ot insights about what the patient might be in denial about in their own lifestyle which needs to be changed that wouldn't require an in theiry change in their core beliefs. For example the belief that being open about feelings to safe people is healthy when it is being done in acceptance and respect that is being equally applied among all of the folks there. In that way people who are introverted do have an advantage. And so each counsellor needs to have their own counselling style.

I find the technique of decatastrophizing interesting. It takes away the fear of an unknown outcome and puts thing in perspective. This may allow the client to more readily take action.

Thanks for this. You answered one of my questions here about addressing current symptoms (Cognitive Therapy) vs Root Causes approach (Telling their story & working through past issues). Would CBT be inappropriate for someone with poor insight, or who is reticent to do homework, behavior experiments, is hyper sensitive to criticism, or is extremely emotionally driven as opposed to rational? So it seems the therapist's own personality type also should be a good match to their client's, since they are working as a team. Do therapists take this into consideration when they decide to take on a client? Thanks for your interesting videos. Perhaps I'll find the answers as I continue going through your collection.
