This is one of my favorite interactions in the show, it really sells to me that at one point these two were married because how well they play off one another. It's cute and you can easily see why they worked at one point.

That was the joke; the entire series sort of hinges on the subsequent experiments that the Orville crew does with this technology that appears in the first episode. Bringing Kelly forward in time, Gordon getting stranded in Earth's past... Gordon enjoying a sandwich four months in the future. All of it.

This is honestly how I feel about some of the dialogues in any scifi show when the cast stands in a semi-circle in a laboratory and gets explained why the new doobeamhickey is better than the old gizmoraytron, thanks to reversed polarity. Also how would a quark, that gets into slow-time first, convince the other quarks (of the same proton or neutron) to do the same slow thing he/she is doing? What would happen if a third of a proton is in a slower/faster time-frame?

Other than as a weapon or life saving device or for cryo, that's about all a time stopping ray would be good for. The aging ray would have soo much larger uses. Grow crops instantly, generate and store power instantly, accelerate computing to insane speeds (Imagine if your computer could do 30 days worth of processing in one second). Deploy it on a larger scale, and you could do automated mining or manufacturing pretty much instantly. Deploy it around scientific equipment like the hadron collider and you could do 100 years worth of science test in a day, unlocking all the secrets of particle physics and new elements. You could even turn it into a different kind of weapon, such as instantly aging a ships hull to the point of degradation, or trapping a reaction in a bubble and then unleashing its power all at once in a concentrated area, because in such a small bubble, heat would just continue to build up with nowhere to go. So even if you were to for example, put an electric heater connected to a battery in a bubble, and let it go for 30 days in 1 second real world time, all that 30 days of heat would be released all at once, creating a massive concentrated explosion once the bubble was turned off. If you even do simple math to visualize the amount of energy that can be extracted all at once, a 1000w heater running 24/7 for 30 days would put out over 730,000 watts of generated heat all at once, or about 23,000 degree's celcius, which would instantly melt anything, even diamond. Trap a nuclear explosion inside, and it would basically ensure 100% reaction rate. Currently, nuclear bombs only reach critical mass with a fraction of material before it's all blown to bits, so most of the reaction is lost to the explosion, which means you could make any nuclear bomb wayyyy stronger. Could even use it to cut through shields, because if a section of space that intersects the shield is in sped up time, the energy making that shield would dissipate instantly. You could even use it to power things, if you could manipulate the field, you could release heat from an explosion slowly, and convert that heat into energy.
