If it would give positive value it would have never intersected the y axis,,but as point 0,-1 lies we can surely say it does intersect xaxis.

There may be other methods to solve this like a = (sin 2x + 9)/(sin(x + pi/4)) and studying the function for its range for the period 2pi. We may find that the range of the function is (-infinity, -10) U (10, infinity). Then we can say that line y = a will cut the graph only if a E (-inf., -10) U (10, inf.). Now in our method we have used substitution. We have t = sin x + cos x. The range of the sin x + cos x is [-sqrt(2), sqrt(2)]. So, when we draw the graph we will consider t on x-axis from -sqrt(2) to sqrt(2) only. In that case we want have full parabola, but part of the parabola. Also, t E [-sqrt(2), sqrt(2)], graph will cut x-axis in this interval for which we must have f(-sqrt(2))f(sqrt(2)) < 0. Also both roots cannot be in this interval as product of roots is 8. This contradiction is occurring as we substituting unbounded function for bounded function, but if we keep in mind this limitation, we wont consider full graph. So, exactly one root will lie in interval [-sqrt(2), sqrt(2)]. Infact here there is not point of discussing second root as graph is not full parabola, but the part of the parabola.
