Another interesting note is that Melissa Leo actually took out FYC ads for herself that year. She was ridiculed a bit for it - there was one where she was standing next to a swimming pool while wearing a fur coat that makes absolutely no sense (you can find these ads easily on Google images) - but she was so good in the film that she probably easily won anyway. Maybe she felt like the studio wasn't pushing for her strongly enough?

I’m still shocked at the bullshit pulled over by the industry for this. The Social Network should have sweeped, and it’s just sad that they messed up so much. Seriously, it should have won Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Score, Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, and Cinematography and it only won 3 of them. How sad. At least in 50 years from now it’ll be looked at like Citizen Kane losing isn’t looked at. Just sad.

Let's not be egregious here. Picture, director, screenplay, editing and score 100% it deserved, and you can sort of make an argument for actor and cinematography (although there were other nominees that deserved it more), but supporting actor and VFX?
@Lamidemonami78914 жыл бұрын
Jacob El Mahir I’m sorry but how is that egregious in the slightest? I can sort of see VFX being like that, but supporting actor is so clearly deserved that I don’t even know why you would suggest that’s a problem. There’s three supporting actor performances in the film better than any other supporting actor performances from that year. And as cool as Tron Legacy and Inception’s VFX are from that year, it’s the same that every blockbuster has. The Social Network put someone’s face on another person, and did it throughout the film. As humans we are far more likely to realize errors in that work and yet it’s literally flawless. It will never age. 50 years from now Inception’s VFX will looks outdated, The Social Network’s won’t. So no, it’s not egregious in the slightest to suggest that the best film of the decade deserved all those awards.
@Gemnist984 жыл бұрын
* I think the reason Nolan constantly got snubbed for Best Director is because, while he is a great director, his movies aren't really about the direction. His films are incredibly tight: actors have to act a certain way and do certain things, and his scripts are so dense and so full of meaning that you can't deviate too far from it the way you can in a Scorsese movie. Heath Ledger only got a pass because Nolan gave him free reign, and Interstellar might be the only movie where he allowed the actors to take over - which somehow didn't please critics compared to his other movies. The only reason why Nolan finally got nominated for Dunkirk was because he didn't focus on the script for once. By eliminating a good chunk of dialogue in the movie and focusing purely on action and object motion, he was given the ability to direct actors more effectively and stage larger set pieces like Spitfires flying over Mark Rylance. It was by far his "most directed" movie, and it paid off.

I know The Academy gives some films that makes people feel good Best Picture, but contrary to popular belief of The Kings Speech being more deserving out of that, The Social Network was more deserving. The films thematic elements & film structure that comes from David's direction & Aaron Sorkin's brilliant screenplay makes it so. It was the one that most of the world of moviegoers felt since 2010 & that they resonate with (but not as much as The Kings Speech). Even from Andrews performance, he made it felt more connective out of that experience. But knowing who the Academy chose over, it's sadly not a surprise.

In hindsight, it's not surprising that the Academy went with the safe choice. They fell for the baitiest Oscar Bait off all-time! Period Piece, usually set in World War II: check! Disability: check! White person overcoming adversity: check! Feel-good, ra-ra ending: check! I mean, it's an ok movie, but there's nothing particularly special about it. The Social Network, on the other hand, is a challenging movie, and the Academy doesn't like to be challenged. Besides, that year was a true show of a rejection of Critics telling them that they HAVE to vote for this movie, and they don't respond well to fervor like that, so it makes sense that this generation's Citizen Kane shares a sideline with its spiritual soulmate. However, I will state this: The King's Speech needed this more than The Social Network did. Why? It's very simple. The Social Network has enjoyed a great life since its release, with its reputation growing as the years have gone on, with most people naming it the film of the decade...and should the AFI update their 100 Films list, The Social Network would have a spot on it. The King's Speech, on the other hand, has been largely forgotten, and if not for its Best Picture Win, the film would have vanished into oblivion, so now it has become a trivia question: THAT'S how the film will be remembered. P.S. The worst win of the night was Tom Hooper for Best Direction. Any one of the other nominees could've cake walked through The King's Speech, but I don't believe Hooper has the ability to do ANY of those other four films...and his post-Oscar career (the OK but gimmick-led Les Miserable, the woefully misguided The Danish Girl, the abomination known as Cats) has only proved that.

Not a minority since the King’s speech has a higher IMDB rating

Black Swan to me is one of the best films of the decade, as a dancer the horrific way he captured that world and the dance scenes were completed with immaculate artistry. And y’all...I’m just gonna have to watch Social Network again because ya boy just can’t get with the hype

Gumball Ward just think about The Social Network for a minute and try and come up with any flaw that the film has... that’s the thing, it has none. It’s a perfect film. That’s why it’s so hyped up

The Social Network is ridiculously overrated, it didn't understand Facebook or the modern age of media very well at all. A decent character study and watchable enough, but far more shallow (as with almost anything Sorkin writes) than the flashy surface wants to lead you to believe, and not particularly groundbreaking cinematically.

The Social Network is about horrible people. Really horrible people. So I just feel that is probably the reason for it losing over The King's Speech. I really didn't like The Social Network because I hated those characters so much. I will have to watch it again, since I only saw it once, but I just felt dirty after leaving the theater. I think that my feelings could have been similar to lots of the other Oscar voters and that is why The Social Network lost.

I remember I got very pissed when Jesse Eisenberg lost the Oscar because The Social Network was my favorite movie that year. But, in hindsight, I can see he was basically playing himself and I'm kinda glad he lost. I can't say the same about the losses for best picture and director, which stings to this day - Sorkin, Reznor and Ross' wins were richly deserved
@mikahong4 жыл бұрын
That would mean Eisenberg is a jerk irl, but I heard he is quite charming and polite, and I can see that in interviews too!

Why is it a problem that he’s “playing himself”? It’s still the best performance of any kind from 2010

I thought King's Speech was just good for what it is but Firth and Rush's performances were so great The Social Network was so so great and it shouldve won best picture in general and Fincher should've won Director True Grit should've won more awards in general
@ChrolliForever4 жыл бұрын
What you all think would be if Colin firth won the seat before for his better performance in A single Man, which he got the coppi volpi and bafta for? Would he be a double winner or would lost the kings speech maybe some steam and social network had won instead? I think it would be a factor.

I love these videos!!! I know another shocker from Oscar past is Saving Private Ryan vs Shakespeare in Love. Another thing in Oscar history that baffled me was City of God not getting a foreign/international film nomination, even though it was nominated for Director, Screenplay, Cinematography and Editing.
@ChrolliForever4 жыл бұрын
Maybe cause it was the official selection the year before for foreign film, so a year later the rules say only in other categories
@davy2092 жыл бұрын
The International Film Branch of the Academy has very few members who vote for Best Foreign Language Film and it’s unfortunate that City of God didn’t make the final cut. But what’s crazy is that when City of God was released in the United States the following year, it was eligible to compete in categories with a much more broader voting block and probably the reason why the movie got 4 Oscar nominations in the 2003 year, despite being submitted for Best Foreign Language Film for the previous year! That happened a few times in the past back when Day For Night won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1973 and in the following year was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay because of its US theater release.

no, The Social Network doesn`t make me feel good. i respect it, but i hate it at the same time. because of the unlikable characters (which are meant to be like that, granted). also, because it`s not a ”movie-movie”, but a writer`s movie. a movie should be, to use ”SN” terms, a synergy. not just a vehicle for the star writer to show off. sure, sorkin is an intstitution and all that. but, ultimately, it`s quite a simple film, with superficial social commentary, which some perceive as profound. it is not. it`s more like fireworks made of words (and shots) that get bordeline tiring - and sorkin has done better than that. on a personal note: it was a NIGHTMARE to translate in my native language (that`s my job) :))). anyway, like u bros
