I have literally just finished watching Monster. It is absolutely wonderful. I'm so glad I watched it without knowing anything about it other than a two-line synopsis as it completely subverts your expectations in the second half of the film. I'm not surprised it won the best screenplay prize at Cannes. Kore-eda is a master director.

Personally, I don't think Kore-eda's made a subpar movie yet in his career and somehow I think he's still an underrated director - Still Walking is one of my absolute all time favourites

Just finished watching the film. It's such a wonderful film. I love how it's shown in a different perspective from different people's views. And I agree, this film shows how the world could be better in different aspects and perspectives. By the end of the film, I was like "okay" and at the same time "what's happened?". After a few seconds of thinking, it hit me like a truck and um, yeah...I was tearing up.

Agreed - Maborosi, After Life, Nobody Knows and Still Walking are four of the best films of the 1990s and 2000s. And then Kore-eda did Shoplifters (and other very decent work like After the Storm) in the past 14 years. An underrated gem.

He is like The Beatles, he makes one masterpiece after another. I have seen most of his films except for a few. I heard that Air Doll isn't great, but I am curious to see it,he also did a film in English with Ethan Hawke which I have not seen. I hope this film is going to be released in theaters.

Great. So happy to hear it's another good one. 'Broker' wasn't his best, but still, I've seen it around Christmas last year in terrible circumstances, and it was such a treat. I always love his characters and the details, like that part where they go to that school/orphanage on the shore and everyone has such a good time. Really looking forward to this one.

The abandoned train is a metaphor of Noah's Ark. A couple of boys (non-reproductive on their own) waited in the Ark until the flood was over. The implication is that God saved them and promised them a better future with a rainbow. Get it? Now watch it again. You will see it.

Hirokazu Kore-Eda made a dramatic thriller? Okay, color me interested now! Though with Cannes, the one film I’m REALLY interested in hearing how it turns out is The Zone Of Interest. It’s been almost a decade since Jonathan Glazer’s last movie, which was a masterpiece. And given the subject matter, I’m REALLY wondering how this will turn out!

Maborosi is a stunningly beautiful profound film, it's a perfect piece of art from start to finish. There is no other living director that compares to Koreeda in my opinion with the exception of Lars von Trier. But I have to say, I really didn't like Monster at all, it's not a great movie in my opinion. It left me cold. I am always afraid of being too opinionated and critical of movies by great directors because I am worried that I am sounding like the guy on line at the movies behind Woody Allen and Diane Keaton in Annie Hall pontificating about Fellini and Marshall Mcluhan, but I am entitled to my opinion I guess. Ryusuke Hamaguchi has a new movie coming out soon called Evil Does Not Exist which I am really looking forward to. There's something about Korean and Japanese filmmakers, they have old souls and they can express the human condition in film better than any other culture. If you haven't already seen a South Korean movie called House of Hummingbird, check it out, if you liked Maborosi, I know you will like this.

I love how subtle this film was about lgbtq, I feel like it’s a good movie that shows how bad homophobia is and impacts people and their mindset, even towards themselves, this movie is good to show homophobes who think being queer is bad and wrong when it’s something of human nature. I loved this, very progressive,profound and shows how we don’t know everything and should be rude to people since we don’t know the full story

That's the problem there. People are quick to judge when they see young boys affectionate each other and they are already gay. No its not. These boys are just looking for connections and trying to understand thier feeling. In this movie, I can see both boys looking for BROTHERLY connections since they are both only child.

Enjoyed his other films - this one not so much. I thought the editing was not smooth and felt jerky with every new perspective. The robotic behaviour of the Principal was way over the top and the mystery of WHY all the staff was complicit and not informing the mother of the truth...and the mother was far too non chalant about how disturbed her son really was ..ugh..just a turn off. Really felt empty at the end and at least 15 minutes could have been shaved off.
@My_Chaotic_Record_Collection9 ай бұрын
Is the ending actually a happy one? (Spoiler question below) I wonder if the boys actually die inside the abandoned train in a mudslide. The film leaves it open whether the mother and the teacher find them inside the train, dead or alive. Perhaps the two we see running out of the tunnel after the storm are just spirits, i.e. the concept of reborn as the boys keep talking about?
@Ruphia19 ай бұрын
Yeah, personally (SPOiler discussion below) I think they're dead in the end. The fact tthat they pretty explicitly rain into the light, and also rain to the train tracks which Yori calls "the end of the line" during the film signals to me that they died and were 'reborn'. They talk about Minago's father being reborn as something noble earlier in the film, and I'm wondering if maybe the idea is that they were reborn into something 'noble', eg being together happily? But yeah, definitley dead in my eyes. Although, apparently somewhere Koreeda said that the films ending signified them coming to acceptance with themselves and so becoming 'free'. So, who knows.

@@nikkiwebsterrulzI find no trustable sources for that. I've been reading and watching a lot of interviews, and the director never says that. The source of that rumor is an indie interview with no evidence, that spread through X. If you have a reliable source, post it. I would appreciate it.

@@antuanvegacruz9710 "Considering the pervading discussions of death and rebirth, I confessed to Kore-eda to believing Minato and Yori had died in the landslide and therefore interpreted their running towards the light at the end to mean a spiritual rebirth. However, he was quick to clarify: "We did not think about them dying. We were simply thinking that they had come out through this process and found out who they were, and it was validated." Being the generous artist that he is, of course, he also added, "But it is not up to me to determine how the audience is going to interpret it.""
@antuanvegacruz97107 ай бұрын
@@nikkiwebsterrulz Sorry, but movieweb is not a reliable source of information. Furthermore, it is the only website (there is another, but also not reliable) that specifically considers that ending. There are no more reliable interviews (like in Forbes magazine or in recorded face-to-face interviews posted on KZbin) where the director specifically says this. Not a single one. Recently, the script for the movie came out, where the final sentence says "A railway bridge awaits them. The two headed into an unknown world." Most likely, they died, as painful as it may be.
