Good honest review. I don't understand why anyone would sign up for these services.

i consider this review a good warning about not wasting money. Gear is expensive as it is, and you make some great points. Imo, this marketing practice (even tho it seems fun) only benefits the companies trying to get rid of fairly inferior product inventory and those products should be anathema in the camping/hiking/backpacking world. Good job! Caveat Emptor!

Not only is it wasting money, but it's wasting product and raw materials by overconsumption.

The Grayl is a quality item ! It`s a purifier, not just a filter. It removes viruses, chemicals and heavy metals. When you use it, it carries 16 or 24 ounces, (depending on model) and you can drink directly from it. I have the Titanium version that is a Titanium cup with a lid that you can use to boil water. Pricey but a quality product. The cartridges are good for 40 or 60 gallons, (depending on model) and replacement cartridges are $25 and $30.

Indeed, I know it's a reputable product and a lot of people like it. I just haven't found occasion to use it yet.

Great video. Seems like a subscription box is not ideal for camping gear since what one person needs/wants is so different from another. Also since it's spread out over a year, the items aren't delivered when one needs them, and it's just random. Those random boxes are probably best for gourmet food items so one can try out new things that one doesn't usually try and even duplicates of items one already has can also be eaten and enjoyed.

Great points, especially about the timing. If you need gear it doesn't help if you wait for a year to get it.

Subscription services never benefit the end customer. It's designed that way. The enticing introductory pricing always gets ya.

Lesson learned.

The only "subscription" I've found worth it is Outdoor Vitals. All your "fees" are actually credited to your account, and you get discounts and exclusives. Even if you just spend the $120 a year on (discounted) meals, it seems like it's a good deal...🤷🏼♂️

I got Subscription through Cairn years ago. When I go through my storage I occasionally find boxes I didn’t open. Or boxes with stuff I will never use. What did I use most? A light up dog collar 😂

Two things. First i love the multi tool i got from Costco. Second it is a shame the sprayer is so expensive i would love to be able to rinse out fish with pressure while not at home. I understand there are better ways to do it and that is your point, but since you have one…

$590?? My god, that's enough to buy a ultralight tent!!!

So, you don't drink ANYTHING you might want to keep cold or hot? Because you can always use that insulated mug for COLD drinks as well. And the Grayl is something you SHOULD use at least once before dismissing it. Same for that Primus burner. You might find it's got a better flame pattern, or is more fuel efficient than you other stoves. That said, I had Cairn, and after the first box, I go one decent thing, and the rest was stuff I never really used at all, nor had any real use for.
@theoutdoorempire3 ай бұрын
Indeed, no knock on those specific products, sure they're decent or even great. I probably will try the Primus stove.

Did that once, very seldom got anything that was worth keeping. They boasted 5 item and many times, 2 of the five item were food or hydration packets. Not worth it for sure.
@davidcooper83903 ай бұрын
Not worth it, but it does give you a plethora of gear to gift for birthdays/Christmas
@theoutdoorempire3 ай бұрын
Good point. If you buy it with the intent to accumulate gifts then why not!

In reality, unless you camp more than a couple times per year all the gear is a waste. Just rent a cabin somewhere. I have all the gear. Multiple set ups for everything from backpacking to car camping to glamping. I barely get to use any of it anymore.

Hammocks👎one girl(me) with 9 brothers that LOVED to spin me like a cocoon & yell "nope, still an ugly caterpillar". If I fell asleep-they’d dump me out. No Thank You! We’re all over 60 now. Payback is coming🤣

Haha that's a good reason to avoid a hammock.

It seems like the people who enjoy outdoor subscription boxes are the same ones who were buying overpriced Council Tool axes with a bit of paint on the handle from Best Made Co.
