IMHO - these are the best issued outer layer in the world for comfort and practicality. Comment below about Bravo 2 O freezing in these.... Interestingly they didn't wear this issue smock - they wore the famous WW2 SAS smock, single colour over the head smock - it had become a fashion icon for British special forces..... may have been a bad choice. With some treatment you can get these pretty waterproof. I live in Australia and they're good for temperatures with big variations. Where i live we can start a day at 3 degrees celcius and hit midday at 35 celcius.... so with a thermal layer under it you can de-layer without all the bulk of down jackets or thicker shells. I've worn and old one cross country skiing with a pair of Dutch issue Goretex pants - it was great as i didn't overheat with exertion but it cut the wind. FWIW - this is not an SAS smock. It's the standard issue desert DPM windproof. It's often confused with the smock the SAS uses because it's made by SASS - a company. This one was issued to a Royal Engineer. The actual SAS smock has no rank slide on the front and a few other differences. Smock nerds will compare this unfavourably to older issue Gaberdine smocks - they're right in some ways. But this is excellent kit! - and soon to become a piece of history with MTP now taking over. Your reviews are very clear and helpful, no BS. Thankyou. And PS - these are not available in Australia anywhere! Snap one up - they're excellent value and look pretty good too.

There are 7 versions of the Windproof smock. Each issued to Reg/Units depending on requirements, but all made by Cooneen Watts and Stone in Belfast NI. Later became Cooneen Defence. The very last incarnation had the three strips of velcro on the arm. Its predecessor was missing the velcro in place of a sighting tool pocket on the arm with the Union Flag. Those are the two issued to regular units. Some were treated with IR coating, some weren't. I suppose you could call that a subtype. There's a fire retardant version issued to AAC. That had a strange fuzzy feel to it. They are darker in appearance, both the sand and the brown colours of DDPM, The pockets are also accessible from the side with velcro. Another FR version was issued to RTR. It looked almost identical to the standard issue but was of a much stiffer fabric. a bit like garbadine or ventile. That was the type that could stand up when wet. Another version has a removable button off hood. And crotch strap Identical in every way to the standard issue. Issued to 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (3 PARA) RM were issued the standard type. I suppose the last thing you want when jumping out of a C130 is a huge flappy wired hood smashing against your face. Yes they're all button down rollable hood, but this is the only reason i can think why Parachute Reg had a removable hood. I suppose if the hood came loose, its a disaster. Finally the SF version. As other commenters have mentioned: It had no rank tab. The contrast between dark brown is very stark. The sand almost pale pink behind chocolate pattern. Only issued to 22nd Special Air Service Regiment & Special Boat Service. Complete with crotch strap, It alsp had a huge 'Poachers' pocket sewn inside at the bum. For reasons we can only speculate.

I got the MTP version of this smock and it's the dog's bollocks. Makes the M65 look lame and outdated. I would only recommend the m65 for extreme cold with the liner. The textile is not as soft as the 94 DPM or as heavy but it's rain proof, the zip pockets are huge and if you needed to go bush packing light you have enough pocket volume to get you through a few days at a push. The more I use mine, the more I like it. The underarm vents really help reduce overheating along with the zip pockets which are backed with a netting liner. With an insulated body vest I reckon it would be very warm in winter. Another thing is the laminating of material for the arm's. Smart. It's just hands down a very very well designed and executed Smock.

SAS smocks are my jacket of choice, especially the woodland DPM. Biggest complaint is rolling up the hood (don't have wire in mine, don't want it either) and waist adjustment cords that force you to take off coat to adjust. Prefer M-65 field coat in these respects. For anyone interested, Special Air Sea Services makes SAS smocks to order with a variety of options and different colours/camo patterns. Liked video, didn't think anybody else got excited about this stuff but me!

Hi! Thanks for the review. British smock jackets are cool (especially in new MTP camo). Can you advise about sizes? As I read 170/96 are equal to 120 cm in chest, because jackets are sewed to fit bulletproof vest, so real size in chest is much larger.
@wireguided9572
@wireguided9572 4 жыл бұрын
British Military clothing is sized as per the NATO sizing. 170 is the height and 96 is the chest size, cm. Search for NATO clothing size chart. There are plenty on line.

I own earlier rip-stop version DDPM Smock with detachable hood and without small arm pocket. I am about 184 in height and 120cm in chest and I own one in size 190/104 and it is still pretty lose. At the same time a also bought the same model but in 180/112 size. I bought two at the same time because they were dirt cheap and because I planned to return one that would fit less. Instead I decided to use second one (180/112) as a part donor. I started with adding pair of pockets on the rear. I also plan to add polar fabric pocket similar to the one found in newest MTP version so that I could warm my hands. arm pockets are also in plans. I also bought new MTP version in size 170/104 bit It was too tight to comfortably wear so I had to return it (they did not have other sizes at the time). I wonder if it is only matter of height or if the version made after rip-stop fabric one were less baggy.

I'd like your opinion on something. I'm looking for a good external layer / parka / jacket to use all-year round. I'm in the mediterranean and in the spring / summer it's really hot but might get a tiny bit chilly or windy at night, so I'd like a light layer with wind protection (don't wanna get too hot). In the winter, I want to use the same layer but with a liner (and probably extra stuff) inside. My questions are, do you think this will be too hot in the summer (again, when there's a minor draft or chill) and if not, is it tough enough to play with sticks and stones and not get it ripped? Any reinforcement in the elbows / anywhere else? Thanks for a great review!
@jamiemcf1
@jamiemcf1 9 жыл бұрын
Teo Maragakis Personally I'd go with one of these or a British soldier 2000 Ripstop jacket. They are similar to the smock modeled, are without a hood and liner and are quite durable. These are available in desert DPM like above or the woodland DPM, Since you're in the med I'd go with the desert pattern to help reflect the sun and heat. These jackets are supposed to be used with a few layers underneath to be warm, hence the lack of a liner. I once wore one with 4 layers plus a liner from an American m65 parka in the Highlands during a winter camp. By night time I was wearing all that inside my sleeping bag and was shaking from the cold. They keep a draft out, but they're not good for being out all day and night in the Scottish winter haha. They are also cheap right now since they've been phased out of military service (Sometimes still used during training of non infantry personnel) so the MoD are getting rid of them.

Not every smock with a hood is a SAS smock, this looks like the general issue windproof, the smock I still have after 20 odd years, is made for gabardine and dries quick, back in my time it was SAS smock and tropical combat trousers is what switched on blokes wore in the field if they could get them, because they dry quick and its not fun staying wet, and as its the real deal has the seam in the right place below the armpits at that back not on the tops of the shoulders, they were specified to be made like that for good reasons, but with standards dropping on everything, maybe thats the way they are made now.. as it happens the KitCarry Smock used to be pricey but popular one too.

Aye, Royal Engineers patch which I am not surprised coz the SAS always wear standard issue smocks and patches that aren't SAS during their missions. Bravo Two Zero wore Black Adder patches (maintenance unit). They even wore Royal Air Force Senior Airmen patches on standard issue Woodland C95s in one of the missions. Having said this, for the record the SAS smock is definitely not like this.

Just purchased for $19 on MilitaryClothing.com ($28 after shipping) irregular size. Not a big deal but what is that little sleeve pocket for? Too small for a pen. Maybe 💄 or chap stick for the macho man.

@@Not.22Man Amazon has them in unissued condition from a vendor called Militar for $58USD. I got one earlier this week. There's no sign that mine was even tried on. No military label on the bag but that's not a problem for me as I bought it to wear. They have a lot of sizes.

How would this actually be in a HOT climate, do you think? It's windproof, but will that make it a bit too hot?

Stephen Kempa That is a really good question and I don't know how it would do since I live in a cool climate. Maybe a viewer can offer some feedback. Strength and Honor my friend. - Luke

Night time in the middle east can drop below 0 degrees Celcius! Although it's hot during the day the temp's can drop dramatically during the night! :)

I agree. It is a characteristic often people don't realise until they have spent time in a few deserts. A desert's key characteristic is a lack of water, therefore a lack of cloud cover, and a lack of large vegetation, and therefore the temperature drops like a stone at night. There are areas of Australia where a 30 degree Celsius change in 24 hours is fairly normal.

Triple259772 you can get them in black. I normally prefer black but they don't look as good. more expensive for some reason too.

Because they make (literally) hundreds of thousands in camouflage colours but only a few in black for the handful of MoD/Civilian people who use them. Economy of scale!

Chuck Biscuits looks just fine to me. They are meant to be a bit baggy to accommodate waterproof and cold weather layers underneath, because these aren’t insulated at all.
