I really enjoy your style and just plain spoken approach! I have two remotes in my wood studio. I put a piece of double sided Velcro on mine and have the ‘backing’ side in various places where I would turn on the collector or the hanging air cleaner - it’s made the search for the remote mostly non existent!

I've been a machinist, cutting ductile iron, for 24 yrs, and I use a SFM equation, daily. It's pretty mind blowing, how few people understand it. You are the first wood turner that I have even heard mention it. It is a very useful piece of knowledge, for sure, if anyone is having trouble, getting the desired finish. "Speedy" and "Shiny", both start with S.... 🤷‍♂️
@ThePapa1947

Thank you Joel, I was a wood pattern maker and turned things as large as 6 foot diameter free hand with normally turning tools. Speed and feed is critical in doing that. Plus I machined my fair share of aluminum on a lathe and mill when needed Like metal different wood needs different speed based on hardness and of course diameter. Thanks for watching and commenting. Very nice bowl. I do it in one step using a faceplate. I put glue on the side of the piece I am turning, glue on a scrap piece of wood and clamp them together with a piece of paper between the two blocks of wood, The next day I use wood screws to screw the end of the scrap piece to a faceplate. I do the whole process in one step. When it's finished, I just put a thin blade at the paper joint, tap it and the bowl pops right off. The glue joint it quite strong, but the wedging action of the blade at the glue joint pops the paper apart without taking wood grain with it. All that's left is a light sanding and finish on the flat bottom.
@ThePapa1947

Thank you Richard, I first learned the paper trick in grade school in 1961 shop class. I used it for a long time. Now if I want something to not have to turn off I will use a hot glue gun to fasten a tenon to the bottom of the bowl and it comes off very easy using a little denatured alcohol. Matter of fact that is what I am using on my next video. I have used the paper joints when doing inside out turnings though. Thanks for watching, Gary

@@ThePapa1947, I love shows like yours and also portable saw mills. To some it may seem like watching paint dry, but I can sit for hours and watch them slab off beautiful boards. My neighbor has a Wood Mizer and I often take a log over and share it with him. My Dad had a wood collection of bowls that he turned and I learned the paper thing from him. I have a couple of them right in front of me in my entertainment center.

Thank you Jon! I realize that many wonder at what speed they should be turning. You will catch on to it the more you turn. If you think surface feet of material passing by your cutting tool that will help. If turning the inside of a bowl and working toward the center you will it is not cutting as good as it was out toward the wall. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary, I really enjoy the information you provided. I come from a long line of wood turners dating back into the late 40’s and 50’s . I worked in my uncles woodturning shop for years learning the trade. Most of his production was spindle type work and furniture manufacturing components. I have been intrigued with you information on star and you 3D effects glue up for segments. Will try and catch more of your videos. Look forward to seeing them. Thank you

Thank you very much Robert. Must have been a fun job working in your uncles shop. I worked as a wood patternmaker and really enjoyed my job. There was plenty of turning but some of the other things were very challenging and I really loved that. Thanks for watching, Gary

Before I semi-retired from photography, I had a real penchant for the unique and surreal. This meant a lot of UV photoshoots, and they were exhilarating. I was always on the hunt for items, props, foods and natural thing that would fluoresce. Most of the best ones now decorate my office as mementos of the sessions. I think I need to add something I've turned from black locust. Thank you for the excellent and fun project during your busy week and happy Thanksgiving, neighbour.

A number of years ago someone cut the tree down about a 1/4 mile from us. I had to stop and ask about it. I should have taken more but I did get a bunch and have some left. I did not know at the time that it was used for fence post but I can see why. Thanks for watching, Gary

I am new to turning and trying to learn as much as I can from the videos I watch. I agree with you about Phil Anderson's trick for removing that nub on the tenon! It's a really easy, cool way to make it look nice and it's easy! AND! Ack's Abrasive Paste and Polish is made about 1/2 hr. south of where I live...I've finally tried it and I love the stuff! Thank you for your videos and I'm looking forward to watching the next one!

Thank you Lori! Phil's trick is pretty cool but there I times I stop or just do not do it depending on how delicate the piece is. Not Phil though he has it down and very seldom does not take it all the way off. For sure the Ack's products do a fine job. Thanks for watching, Gary

Good afternoon, Gary. Great video and bowl. I have some black locust ready to cut up and looking forward to getting some on the lathe. Thank you Ray! I do like Black Locust and have a few more nice pieces. The bark is so thick I do not like it as a live edge other than the droop bowl I made. That was and end grain turning and the bark looks good that way. Glad I found it because Laguna wants a lot for a replacement. Thanks for watching, Gary

I agree with you completely about Zinsser Seal Coat. First, it is a fairly light cut of shellac, so it goes on easily and dries quickly. It makes a nice sanding sealer both before and after sanding. Second, it is dewaxed so you can put any other finish on top of it. Great stuff. I get it by the gallon and then pour it in pint jars so I don't have to continually open and reopen the can. It lasts longer that way. Ack's Abrasive Paste is good stuff, too. Nice bowl. Thanks for the video. P.S. Never let a camera know you really need it. It'll mess with you every time.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Jerry. You nailed it with the Zinsser Seal Coat. Not everyone understands it is dewaxed and will say why not just think down the Zinsser shellac and use it as sealer. On a piece where I plan on building up a surface finish I will use 2-3 coats of the sealer on softer wood. I also get it by the gallon(saves money) and I put it into 8 or 16 oz bottles. I am now using the Rockler glue bottles which I think are 8. Yes those camera's love to mess with you. Mine beeps if it is going to go to sleep but not when the battery goes dead. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary
