I made a cute little Hummingbird house. Fun and easy to make. Made from semi spalted Sweet Gum. The roof has a shingle look. I used a soldering iron to burn the lines in it. A little rustic looking but it will hang outside and get weathered.

Thank you Bram, well I hope something uses it for a home. I have heard that hummingbirds do not like enclosed places. So I lowered the rent and may be some other little bird will use it. At least the hummingbirds love the feeders have out and perhaps they are nesting in one of our trees. We have quite a few. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

This is a great birdhouse, but I am a bit surprised you put a perch on it. Small birds don't need perches, but predators do. IN any case, this is a great project. The "shingles" were a nice touch. Thank you.

Thank you Jerry. It is more of a decoration. We do get a lot of hummingbirds They actually use the little perches on the feeders at times while they are eating. We have a lot of big trees around and they must be nesting in them. Or even in the trees in our yard. I know they love the big Siberian Elm we have. Thanks for watching, Gary

such a gorgeous object :) they would sell really well at craft fairs I'd imagine! I have an American Sweet Gum in our front garden (very unusual in the UK), I might to go and chop a bit off it! Thank you Matt, they probably would sell great at a craft show. Not really interested in selling but you are right. Yes those shavings are like Walnut for sure. This piece was created by mother nature while it sat there in a damaged part of the tree. The rest of the wood was rather plain looking but I let it sit under a tarp for a year and it has all spalted nicely. Thanks for watching, Gary

It was already a nice birdhouse when you started, you only needed to hollow it. 😊 At least that's what I am planning for a turned birdhouse. Yours is nice too Gary, great job again. Probably I will make one too this year, it was already on my todo list. Already curious what you will think about that. 😉
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Leo, well what I think about just hollowing it out is I think it might work better than the upgraded model I made. It would be very natural for sure. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I might make a few myself. Just take a branch and drill a hole in it. No lathe needed!

@@ThePapa1947 That would then be for very small birds only. About four inch is the bare minimum I guess. What I realize now is that I need to hurry up if I want to be in time for thus year's breeding season. The birds are already searching for nesting places. And I'm committed to at least one other project before I can start; a food bowl for our dog. 😁 Its all about the animals this year!

That is adorable! Don’t be disappointed when you don’t get any hummers - they build amazing nests on tree limbs and don’t use cavities, but depending on the hole size you may get chickadees or wrens, both of which are equally as adorable as hummingbirds. Nicely done Gary, and that sweet gum is beautiful!

Thank you Lisa, we do have another hummingbird house that is just some pieces of random wood layered and completely open in the back. I am sure that is just what they would like. And we have lots of very little birds hanging around. The house is open to the first tenant that tries it out. I guess I have seen little houses like this that were called hummingbird houses. Never did know where the nested but we have some regulars that come most everyday. I still have a number of pieces of the Sweet Gum but the best have been near the crotch area of the tree that held water. But some of the other pieces that appeared to be very plain when I cut them up ended up splating where I had them stored. I did a large planter box and was shocked the whole piece had spalted. Thanks so much for watching and the information. Gary
