Interesting piece Gary. I really like the shape you gave it. My personal preference is the lighter bug tracks, but it all really does come down to personal preference. There were a lot of ways to go with this piece of wood; you did it justice.

You are so right. We are provided with so much and who are we to say that something should always be what we think it should be. I may still may change the other ones to black. The other made it look like it is hiding the tracks. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year, Gary

Cool turning Gary Love bugholes. Especially when they have enough character of their own to allow highlighting. I like the black CA and black Liliput that Andy Phillip uses for this....want to try his abrasive paste too. Think i need to get some feednwax too as i'm still on the walnut oil and beeswax. Thanks for sharing Gary, Oh yes. HAPPY NEW YEAR

I'm glad you tackled it, Gary. I like the bug holes filled with the black to contrast, best. As with any irregular shaped bowl, it's tough to get a nice finish that really Shines on it, but the softness of yours looks pretty nice. I've got one gnarly chunk of birch that was going to become a bowl to to someone in exchange for 6 ft of beech, but we decided there were too many splits and cracks to make it worth rescuing. Life's too short to turn bad wood. But these were cracks, not bug holes, so we picked a different blank and it's on the work order. Thanks for the lesson.
@ThePapa194716 күн бұрын
Thank you Jay. You made a great choice not turning a chunk with heavy cracks. I just cut up a badly cracked piece of wood looking to find something to turn. I found something with very plain looking grain so I have set that aside for now. As much as like a good shine there are some pieces that should be softer looking. This one shiny would really makes those patches look bad. At least to me. Thanks for watching, Gary

@ThePapa194716 күн бұрын
Thank you Amy! So I do not always bring the bowls in to show my wife right away. I just did and asked her what she likes. She went with the dark patch and said..."It Makes Them Pop" But she also likes the pine colored patch as well. I guess I like the light patch on the inside as that is what you see mostly. But picking it up and looking at the bottom you get a nice surpise. Thanks for watching, Gary

I was amused when you (correctly) cautioned against turning with a crack in the center as you removed the last from the inside. I would not have hesitated to do the same thing. Cracks are part of the piece and we have options about filling them, but I can't remember the last time a crack made me abandon a piece. It's just part of the challenge. Nicely done.

Happy New Year Gary . I think the bowl came out pretty nice . I like the brown filler better then the black in this application . It looks a little more natural . Afterall those bugs do leave "wood" behind . lol . Seriously though you took a seriously cracked piece of wood and made a nice bowl of it . Don't burn it , turn it !

Thanks Jon I still have a hard time picking what I like the best. But I am too close to the thing...and the thing it is LOL. Glad you like it and glad I finished it. Take care my friend, PS...we are rain free at the moment. Well at least for a few minutes Gary

Papa, Happy New Year 🎆! Try to think of the bug holes not as a bug but rather as a feature 🤪. Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless, Paul

Thank you Paul. Bugs deserve respect...except for bugs in your computer....or your bed LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary

It's a pretty piece, Gary. Since you asked: for _my_ taste the undyed wood filler looks better.

Thank you Vincent I appreciate you watching. My wife like the undyed patch as well. Thanks for watching, Gary

I think it turned out great, I like the dark I never thought of using that filter did not think it would stay in we have a damp climate, think I like dark best

Thank you Pat. I first used that patch at work as a wood patternmaker. After painting a pattern you would find places that needed a patch and it was the best stuff ever. Back then it was called Fix-It Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary, I think the lighter color look better on the inside I think it would’ve been great on the outside but the bowl turned out real nice you did a wonderful job keep up the good work

Thank you Ken. I am still deciding which I like better. Guess having both makes it easier LOL Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Bill, the more I look at it I like both sides about the same. I was leaning toward the inside though. Thanks for watching, Gary

I like what you did In using the Feed n wax. The color/tint that it made is very nice. I used clear epoxy to fill worm tracks and voids in a couple projects and I kinda like to see into them myself. The contrast you have on the sides with your tinted filler is attractive though…? Great work as always Papa. Happy New Year to you and your family

Thank you Barry. I really was going to leave the bug holes unfilled. But man it was hard getting all the sawdust out they left in them. So I decided to get most and cap it over LOL. I do think the Feed n Wax was the best choice as well. Happy New Year to you and yours as well, Gary

I prefer the lighter color. Honestly, I would have given up on this one, so kudos to you for finishing it!

Happy new year Gary. I have to say you are a braver man than me , when I find cracks like that it becomes firewood. As for the bug tracks I think I like the inside better looks a little more natural. When I find them I generally just add some thin CA to seal them.

Thank you Rick. So I do not show all the times I stop and check the piece to make sure it is hanging in there. And yes it can fly apart even if it looks good. I have turned 6 to 8 foot diameter turnings as a wood patternmaker. It is far more concerning than this guy. Although there were no cracks in these big turnings. And they were segmented. CA is good for the cracks but I would go broke trying to fill all these bug holes LOL Thanks for watching, Gary

I have no issues with bug holes and cracks. Nature is beautiful. No need to fuss over it. Looks really good.

Thank you Allen. I do like them as well. Maybe a few less but this is what nature provided. Thanks for watching, Gary

I think the bowl turned out pretty good ,as far as the patches go it doesn’t look great, but it doesn’t look bad. I think next time leave the worm holes as holes so you can feel the texture and see the texture but overall I like it
@ThePapa194710 күн бұрын
Thanks Robert. I was going to leave the holes but digging them out was not that easy so decided to fill them in. I sort of wished I would have cleaned up out but that would have taken a long long time. Thanks for watching, Gary

I prefer the pine color, but it is a unique feature to have the pine inside and the black outside, nice bowl.

Thank you for your feedback. I think I will pick up some Milliput for the next time I find this issue. What would be you favorite color for this? Gary
@markduggan345117 күн бұрын
I like it, I think it would have been nicer if you had done the same colour for the bug holes, maybe the black.
@ThePapa194717 күн бұрын
Thanks Mark and you are right I wish I would have as well. The black was harder to work with as the dye I used was an acrylic dye and not mix well with the patch I used Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you James for your feedback. The lighter filler looked good till I sanded it. At that point I was not going to dig it out. I will keep it to put small things in on my bench. Gary

Well Done Gary - great job! I like black in the cracks, but not in the worm holes. Usually I simply clean out the worm holes but don't fill them; it limits the choice for a finish, but, like others have commented, it is Nature. Which leads me to a question - when you find worm holes, do you treat the wood for it, or whack the wood in the microwave (if so, for how long)?
@ThePapa194717 күн бұрын
Thanks David. If I find a live worm then I will toss it in for maybe 40 seconds or so. I almost left them unfilled but it was so much work getting everything out I just capped them over. Thanks for watching, Gary
