Your design is my favorite part, Gary! Sometimes I accidentally get a shape like that but I never start out intending to. It really makes the piece stand out! Your finish, as always, is flawless! Beautiful piece of Cherry from Rick, too! Sorry you had to go through the tedium of dealing with that bark. It can be a real pain. Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! 😀 Phil

Wow!! That was a lot of work, but it sure was worth it! It is (like all your work) STUNNING! My friend gave me a cherry log this summer when I was up in Michigan. I figure it will need time to dry (I understand it takes years to dry) so, I figure I will keep learning while it dries and I hope to try and make a bowl like that. If it is even a quarter that beautiful and I will be thrilled!!! Thanks for all the inspiring and educational videos! I always look forward to your new releases!
@ThePapa194719 күн бұрын
Thank you Susan. Happy you like it. If it is still a full round log I would suggest cutting into halves. And seal the ends if you have not. This will allow it to dry much faster. Hope that makes sense, Gary

That is one sharp bowl, great colors and grains. When you were sanding and holding the bowl I recalled another guy on KZbin with a Laguna lathe who took a magnet with some round stock attached to it to hold the button depressed that locks the headstock spindle from turning. One of these days I will get around to making one for myself as I have a Laguana lathe myself. Much easier than trying to hold your work by hand. Thought I would throw that out there ,maybe you will find that a helpful tip?

Why do you always leave that hump/nipple in the middle of the bowl when you are hollowing? Is it necessary?
@ThePapa194713 күн бұрын
Hi Tom, well it is not necessary at all. If you are talking about at the end of cutting I like to take that off with a scraper. This is easier than a gouge and with the gouge you could cut below the rest of the surface and need to flatten it again. If you are talking about while hollowing it just sort of gets left because starting the cut dead center is much harder so it is faster just to get some good cuts and come back and deal with it.
