I used to be a librarian and I can tell you, at libraries we get donations of books all the time (many, many old ones). We are only too happy to give them away, for free, no cost, just take them. So my advice to you ladies, go to your local library for your books, they will happily let you take them off their hands. Thanks for the video ♥

Thank you so much for this tip, I have no money right now, but really want to do such crafts. As soon as this stay-at-home, shelter-in-place ends, (well, probably a few weeks after that, just to be sure, for everyone) I'm going to my libraray.!
@aliiljah82244 жыл бұрын
I like that idea. It would be nice if the library had a room where they kept all their books they don't want anymore so you could buy them. Our library has a sale just once a year, you have to stand in line for quite a while to get in. I'll have to give this idea to the library and see what happens, Thanks

After a lengthy discussion with my local librarian about gutting books. I don't hesitate to take a very old book apart. She told me a mind-blowing number of both old and new books end up in land fields. Then she made me aware many old books turn into actual dust sitting on shelves in homes who have their best intentions at heart, but time takes its toll. Preserving old text is both a tricky and sometimes very expensive endeavor. In her opinion it is better to repurpose them, and I tend to agree with her. Enjoy giving them a new purpose!

Just a tip to save time down the road. At 6:25 when the text block is out, I'd take some measurements of it before you set it aside (height, depth of the text block at the binding, and width across the top of the book from the sewn edge to the outside edge). The depth measurement at the binding should save time at the step at 27:30 and the height and width will help in Part 3 with trimming the pages.

Hello :) thanks for sharing. As an outdoors person I can say downhill is well known in the sport as being more dangerous than climbing a hill, mainly because people get too confident or misjudge or too stubborn to turn back when wild weather comes like me haha. My suggestion is to imagine the path as some extremely uneven sort of "harry potter" level of safety on some stairs at the first time you've visited a friend's house. Take each step as they come, focus on concentrating with each uneven step :) I'm sorry your knee didn't like the hill

Thank you for this video. I’ve been wanting to make a junk journal for quite awhile, but didn’t know what to use for the cover. An old book is genius!

Found you by accident! So glad I did! I am getting ready to do a book for a young gentleman & thought the hidden spine would work. You have wonderful directions! Thank you! You remind me of Nik the Booksmith. She makes it fun to watch! I have watched all 3 videos & now I am replying! I think after watching you I can do this also! Great video! I am going to subscribe too!

Never had thought of using Tyvek tape - I’m always sacrificing mailers to the cause :)

Tyvek tape is incredibly strong and easy to cut but very difficult to tear :)

What if you slid a thin metal ruler in the space of the spine before you start cutting? That way your knife would cut down the ruler and not cut your spine?
@ThePaperOutpost5 жыл бұрын
Hi Unusual Vintage! Brilliant idea! :) !!
@michigangarnet38043 жыл бұрын
One way I did it was I cut with scissors from the inside of the spine out
@elinordrake71293 жыл бұрын
I stuck my pinkie in to widen the space. But took it out prior to cutting of course. Made it fairly easy

I found 2 very old books that I’ve had no idea what to do with (one has no spine and the other I’ve had to tape down because the spine is only connected to the back cover. Love that this popped up in my recommended!!

I treat old books with respect. Rare books are not replaceable, when once they are lost.
@janemiller53964 жыл бұрын
@@pinklady7184 I agree in principle. But very few old textbooks are either rare or irreplaceable.
