My grandfather was a SF Detective at the time (Vice, not homicide), and he wasn't directly involved in the case, but he, and some of his peers, always thought it was someone who was in law enforcement, and obviously ex military. He said the 60's were a rebellious time out there and even a lot of cops and former military were off-beat, and had this "screw authority" thing about them. And many believed it was someone on a local force who was unhappy with their boss/ bosses, and this was their way of getting back at the very force they represented. According to grand-dad, any notion of this was scoffed at by command. The worst PR for law enforcement back then would have been the very boogeyman that they were investigating, could have been one of them. One thing you can't underestimate, is just how cunning this guy was. He would have had to have a very high IQ and a real hatred for authority/ his bosses. I don't think this guy was a Captain or LT (Not a commissioned officer). It seemed like the top brass in law enforcement is who he really liked saying "TAKE THIS" too.

I just hope we get more information on the outfit he wore and the coded messages, the guy said he couldn’t say anything else about it right now when asked about those things specifically. I’m wondering if maybe they found something? It seems like if they did it would be national news and not just something behind the scenes for a Netflix documentary, over the years there have been many stories come out of someone claiming their dad, grandfather, brother or whoever was the zodiac. Hopefully there is some closure but I just question what things he was holding back on that he said he couldn’t talk about, surely if they found some definitive proof it would be all over the news. In my opinion the zodiac had to have been a very intelligent person to write coded letters that to this day some still can’t be deciphered. Also if the police drove by the zodiac but were looking for a black man when the cab driver was murdered wouldn’t they be like hey what’s Richard doing out here if it was him? Idk maybe when they say they drove by him they don’t mean they literally got a good view. This case has bothered me for years, it’s one of the first cases that got me into true crime

I had a couple comments on the preview to the episode. I firmly believe Gary Francis Poste led "the posse" that consisted of Richard Hoffman + Arthur Leigh Allen, and about a dozen more that we never really heard of. Hoffman was Navy and Poste was Air Force veteran. I think The Zodiac was a collaborative effort.

I was just thinking how crazy that first 10 days of August 1969 were . My family moved from Northern California August 1st 1969 to Southern California. I was 6 years old at the time. "Zodiac" thank you for this upload. I have to say that the case of Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard bothered me. My heart hurts for Cecelia. Bryan on the other hand, I feel appalled by. I say that because starting at 28:54 when Bryan is interviewed, he has more empathy for the Zodiac murderer than he does for Cecelia. At 29:54 he calls Cecelia "the girl", he does that a few times, then he goes on to say "she" and "her". The interview with him ends at 33:49 and during that time, he only called Cecelia by her name once. He was very intent on helping the murderer, making excuses for him. That man Bryan stated that he survived because he had the will to live. Really???!!! Cecelia died, but she truly did have the will to live. That hospital bedside interview with Bryan left me with disgust. Bryan is an arrogant narcissist and I wish that Cecelia had never gone on the picnic with him.

The fact that his grandfather also repeatedly misspelled the same words the same way as in the Zodiac letters. Also, while watching "This is the Zodiac Speaking", I often wondered if the Zodiac wasn't Don Cheney or another person interviewed in the documentary, like Richard Hoffman. One of the pix in this video was of Don Cheney (while you were describing Arthur Leigh Allen) Cheney was the guy who contacted Toschi telling him all about how his friend Leigh fit the description.

Absolutely incredible job guys. From the cinematography to the lesser known information about the case (the zodiac shack, etc) is top tier documentary making. I’ve always been fascinated by true crime as well as the paranormal and I love how you merge the two for a unique experience! I always feel like I know almost all the information regarding decades old cases and then here you are presenting us with things I’ve never heard of. Keep killing it!

The crime scenes were not randomly chosen. They're the key to the mystery. There is also a very noticeable window of opportunity wherein the canonical crimes where committed, that are synced with the equinoxes and solstices. There's a pattern to the madness, and the Zodiac Killer planned this very meticulously

A very informative episode. The 'inside' scoop regarding the Vallejo PD is at the time of the 1st [?] attack, several police officers were engaging in illegal clandestine affairs with underage teenage girls. Darlene was one of those victims. She was dating or had dated at leat two VPD officers, and one of those officers was not a friend of Hoffman-by some accounts both officers HATED each other, in that same account both officers were separated by their fellow officers when they got into a fist fight with each other. The theory is that Officer Hoffman murdered Darlene to get back at his rival, her former boyfriend cop. That said, I never made the connection to Allen until this episode. Allen was a known criminal and later Zodiac suspect, which begs the question, "Did Hoffman know of Allen and his criminality, namely as a child molester before the Z murder(s)?"" If so, I don't find it a coincidence that the murder of Paul Shrade happened to be near Allen's mother's home. Add to this Allen's previous questioning regarding him being near the scene of the Lake Murders and his admission of soiled (bloodied) knives in his car. That may have been tenuous, but no less lucky fluke for Hoffman. Once Allen was on everyone's radar as a suspect, especially with his criminal history of sex crimes, all the pieces fell into place. As a cop, Hoffman would have had access to Allen's criminal files after the fact, if not before. These files would include Allen's writing, grammar style, and a detailed description of his M.O., known relatives, associates , more importantly his and their residences. If subsequent murders matched Allen's MO and were committed near his known haunts, Allen would be the perfect fall guy. This is far out thinking on my part. So here's a basic synopsis. -Hoffman kills his rival's ex-girlfriend, whom he too dated, as payback. -Hoffman needs a fall guy for the murder(s), and he knows of Allen, at the very least, known sex offenders within the region. Back then, the area wasn't heavily populated, and everyone knew [about] everyone. The cops knew even more. -Hoffman then commits more "copycat" murders to waylay the investigation away from him and his fellow VPD associates, who may be culpable in the VPD sex crimes. Or Hoffamn was already committing Z-like crimes and Darlene's estrangement from him was just another knock to be carved. two birds with one stone. His rival (fellow cop) and his ex-girlfreind both destroyed. In retrospect I wonder if he was trying to set-up his rival, as the primary suspect in the attack? Humm.. -Some within VPD, whether associated with the sex crimes or not, figure early that Hoffman or someone within the VPD was responsible for Darlene's murder and initially stymie any cooperation with neighboring law enforcement agencies. This non-cooperation goes back and forth for years, ultimately making any further cooperation tepid at best. To add to this, several local investigative journalists who were either investigating the 'alleged' sex crimes committed by a few VPD officers or the Zodiac murder(s) in general were demoralized or, worse. They intimatied VPD, were responsible for the intimidation. In an episode of "gotcha journalism" care of (Geraldo Rivera) the sister of Darlene, ambushed Micheal Mageau some decades later after their attack. In this secretly videotaped confrontation (some distance away) at Micheal's residence-she and Micheal conversate in his front yard. She sincerely and repeatedly asked him if there was something he omitted in the official statement and subsequent interviews. Micheal is obviously nervous when remembering the horror of the attack. Anyone familiar with PTSD can recognize his body language. To me it appears to be survivor's guilt. But Micheal becomes more apprehensive and visibly nervous when Darlene's sister aggressively asks the question. The one question that she and her family have been wanting to ask Micheal for years, "Please Micheal, you know who the killer is, don't you?!" [paraphrased] At the time of this confrontation Hoffman was still a (high level) cop and a few VPD officers involved in the Zodiac investigation were still around as well. If the killer could kill his girlfriend and assault him, get away with the crimes, and happens to be a Top Cop of the local PD, P.D. what do you think his response would be? I've read, listen, and viewed several theories regarding Zodiac. But the only theory that raises the hairs on the back of my neck is that of Hoffman. I guess it has to do with the lastest series of sex crimes committed by law enforcement that has been reported on in recent years. Maybe I'm reaching, but the "aged" photo of the original Zodiac suspect stretch hooked me. Watching Hoffman give his interview and deny he "knew" Darlene in the A.L. Allen documentary from a few years ago seals the deal for me. Hoffamn's grandson, 'real police,' is a hero in the truest sense of the word. I am sure he has even more evidence to share. I hope he can reconnect with his family and that they all find peace afterward. I thought I'd never wish well for any cop, but there it is. Let justice be done though the heavens fall...
