We elect PMs & Parliament can & does call new elections (& referendums) any time between their term of Office expiry.(4 years) . I would be interested in know who, in your opinion- PM you considered loony? Quite seriously there always is only a small degree of separation b/w the two elected parties (unless you are a "fanatic"). As a Canadian I find it utterly bizarre that automatic voter registration is not standard across the entire United States. It sometimes seems that the American election system is focused more on making it difficult for citizens to vote than on getting citizens to vote. Having to register to vote is ridiculous. The government knows who's eligible to vote. In my country every eligible voter gets a letter in the mail with which you go to the voting station. Fun fact, voting is obligatory over here. You can get fined €250 for not voting.

Are you from Peru? I had to drive a Peruvian friend to their consulate each time there were elections. If she didn't have a good, and I mean a solid excuse, she could be fined and loose government benefits. Never understood that. In my country you are (and have to be) registered at the place you live, for stuff like taxes etc. If you're a citizen and eligible to vote you get the "invitation" and voting papers per mail beforehand, so that you can organise mail-in-vote if you can't vote in person for some reason. Also voting always takes place on Sundays (when most businesses are closed here). Maybe these changes would be easy to achieve in the US as well, but I don't know details about the system and what are the reasons behind this.
