Conures, as well as other parrots, are extremely smart creatures. They are obviously social as the video points out and require a certain amount of bonding. Owning a bird is a great responsibility and training isn't a quick endeavor. They have to have the right diet, exercise, interaction, and medical care. So many people buy these magnificent creatures for all the wrong reasons and the bird's fate can end up being tragic. I'm glad to see that someone appreciates their beauty and intelligence. Thank you, David.

There’s this low pitched grumbling sound almost every conure I’ve known has made, it’s usually when they have an attitude or they’re a little angry. I call it conure cursing. For some odd reason my quaker does those sounds too and I’ve never seen a quaker so it, and he doesn’t live with conures

This is a wonderful compilation of their noises! I have a 7 year old Greencheek named Rupert. Sadly, he was abused prior to me getting him in 2017, so some of his noises are a little different to your flocks'. His contact call is kind of a multipurpose one. Sometimes he just wants someone in the room with him, and sometimes he's just really excited, and wants to tell the whole world about it (while holding a pepper or other piece of food in his foot!). The best way I can describe it, is "bajaaaaaaant!". It's one of his loudest vocalizations. His alarm call is very much like Scampi's, and sometimes can be accompanied by the "brrrrr" noise that you call growling. I usually associate it with him being scared, because his body usually flattens, and he may take off flying, if he's scared enough. He also has another very wild sound, that I discern as major distress, and that's his "rap-ba-bap!" call. Rupert is a night owl, and would much rather stay up really late, and fall asleep on a human's lap. One time, after being tucked in his sleep cage for the night, he started sounding off that distress call, and I really did think he was in mortal danger, and I rushed in to see what was wrong. He was fine! He was just protesting bed time. But, since I reacted the way I did, he's learned that he will be uncovered if he "cries wolf" and sounds like he's in dire trouble. Like Scampi, Rupert also gets pretty worked up over jingly balls, so we do have to be careful there. Rupert has never done the anxious peep, but instead uses the "brrrrrreee" in a trill (it's a more extended version of his scared noise), as if to say "don't leave!" Rupert only squeals when we "wrestle". He leaps on to a towel over my hands (like a bird-sized trampoline) and he squeals with delight. It's one of the exercises I started doing with him, to help him loosen up and learn to play. He still has some remnant fears from his past that we're working on. As far as acquired noises, he is actually very clear! He can say "watcha want?", "what are you doin'?", or sometimes he mashes those up in to "what doin' do?". He can also bark very quietly (we don't have a dog, and there's no TV in the room, so we have no idea where that one came from!), and he can't whistle, but he tries really hard to mimic his flockmate's (Sherbet is a Peachfaced Lovebird) wolf whistle, by simply saying "wee-a-weet!". We're not certain, but he also has one sound, that sounds like he says "Ru-errr" sometimes... maybe as an attempt at his name? He also slurps. I would make those sounds to encourage him to try new foods (while pretending to eat those foods myself), and ever since then, he uses it whenever he wants a bite of whatever you've got in your hands. You have to make sure it's something he can actually have, because as you probably know, they are really good at guilt-tripping humans.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
They certainly can be very good at training and guilt tripping us lol They know how to get their way! It is also true that they have their own unique vocalisations dependant on experience! There are common ones but they tend to vary! Which I think is awesome! Sounds like a real pair of characters!

My conure when defiant, the male, will always move his head from left to right, hissing. I wonder for months when it came from until I realized he was actually considering the sponge on the table a "rival", showing is territory. So everytime we are cleaning up the table, he shows the cage is their own my doing this. So know, he also uses this to show to people that his cage is his own or that an item or even the chair belongs to him . It's impressive how they tend to memorize their own codes. By sister bred them, she is her a conure breeder, and the ones at my place clearly developed element of language and communication specific to them. These birds are really amazing. I like your videos they help me understand some things better and also to correct my mistakes!

I guess because she's an 'only bird,' my conure uses a lot of acquired noises. I'm surprised by how effective she is at communicating with them. Some of them would be "Bye bye!" When I'm about to leave for work, kiss noises and "peekaboo" when she wants attention, "cuddle!" for scritches, and "Pippin treat!/Gimmie treat!/you wanna treat?" uh... Pretty much all the time! Probably shouldn't've taught her that one, lol.

I just love all of this information (also on your other videos). My pineapple is a little girl that will be 7 in July. Have her since she was a baby. She sans "baby" and all sorts of giberish that I do not yet compréhension. She un rôles toilet paper, pushes everything from tables, counters on the floor (coffee cups, water glasses, tv control, my cell, etc). When I do dises she eats the soap, take a bath in a pan on the stove for pasta, takes a bath in the dog or cat's bowl, dives into my peanut butter or jam jar all you see is a tail popping out, she hides in the cupboard, once found her in the fridge (she was there just a few seconds), she likes to terrorize my other birds. I can go on and on. I have to watch her all the time. But she's a cuddle ball and looks at you with these loving eyes like to say "I love you mum". She's like a teenager with TDHD. In three words "She's lovable". With this ball of feathers, you definitely are not bored.

I want to report that my conure "Hoby" has recovered somewhat from his stroke a month ago. He has gotten quiet-er and calmer which I love, since I was given him to me by someone who was going to do something bad to him for he screams. Really at times I would go crazy...now he has perched himself for most of the days. He still feels safer to eat and night long sleep at the bottom. I found your channel when I was desperate to find out what to do. You have been a part of his healing because of your kind words during a rough time. I have had him for over 50 yrs myself. Make sure you all want something in your life for possible a long visit. Love hearing everyone's comments about their birds.

Hey Maryann, I'm really glad he's doing well. I'm also glad that we have been able to provide some support and comfort with the difficult times. Me and Sophie have had them too and it's great to hear kind words or just to see nice videos! He's a distinguished man and it's great he's eating, relaxing and acting semi normally even if a little more quietly lol

My conure, he (maybe a she) started making a hissing noise. He isn’t mean when he does it, but he also keeps stretching his head higher and higher when doing it. If you put your teeth on your bottom lip and just slightly blow, that’s what it sounds like. I don’t know where he picked it up.

My conures start clicking to each other before all of them take off suddenly and start flying around the house/room in a flock. 😂 It’s like they are warning each other that they are about to start flying and then they all decide to fly into a new room. I think they do that because I use a treat clicker to show them that I am about to broom (they are afraid of it, but using a clicker calms them down and got them to be okay with it👍🏻)
