Sometimes it can get as cold as Canada, and sometimes it can be as hot as Mississippi. That averages out to Kentucky weather. You can now count on about 2 weeks of above average temperatures, with the end of that period well above average, and a couple of inches of rain, with no snow. After that... No one knows. Don't put away your winter clothes until mid-March. Get a carbon monoxide detector.

Glad to see you made it through! Just a thought on your wood stove flue pipe: if your flue height is lower than your roof ridge, then the top of it needs to be farther away than 10 feet from the roof slope when drawing a level line from the top of the pipe to the slope of the roof. If neither of these conditions are met, this could contribute to unwanted downdraft. May God bless you both!

Thats what we read when we installed it so we are 2 feed above any peak on the roof within 10 ft of stove pipe.

Would smoke detector help in a situation like that. They are cheap insurance. We had plenty of food in the house and just hunkered down. One of our boys had a pipe break in the basement and they have lost everything in their family room. They had a plumber out today. My son was able to bypass the leak until they could get help.

Great video. I didn't have any issue with the original video, but hopefully all can enjoy with this new upload. Sorry to hear of all the difficulties that you encountered. Glad that everyone ended up being ok and everyone weathered to storm ok. If your hay was Alfalfa, they may have waited too long to bale, the hay and it got too dry, so there was some leaves lost. Try in the future to get 2nd and 3rd cuttings as the hay is usually a better quality. Are there any issues with cross breeding an Angus Bull with a Jersey cow as far as the calves that are born, as they won't be full Jersey calves? Congratulations to the 2 of you for weathering the storms and it's challenges.
@ThePasturedHomestead
@ThePasturedHomestead Жыл бұрын
We did get 2nd cutting from the seller, and it timothy hay. Half of it is great and the other half has a lot of stems. You live and learn... Now I know what to look for! Ive heard that jersey/angus cross makes for a great beef!

8 year ago at our other house we were having same problem with fireplace. i had a guy come out and he told me we needed to raise our chimney over 4' over the roof peak. after he did that never had that problem again. our new home we are in i made sure it was over the peak. I hope your fix works. The oil cooler orings are bad for shrinking when it gets real cold. stay warm there.
@ThePasturedHomestead
@ThePasturedHomestead Жыл бұрын
Well if this doesn’t fix it we will throw another piece on that will put us really high above the peak. Glad I’m not the only one that thought that was the issue. I was happy to see there was no coolant in the oil, just oil in the coolant. So far so go

It looks like you have a lot of cut offs from the previous owners. Probably more than you can burn in many years I bet. Maybe you could sell some of that wood before it rots away? I sell firewood and I do sell chunks and cutoffs to guys who burn in wood stoves or boilers.

Hey! Love the channel. I have 2 cows like you (angus) and a couple steers. I just got a bull calf and was debating keeping him for breeding... But when looking at the cost, 40$ for AI (120$ each since I got it done 3 times this summer) or 1000-1500$ in hay to feed a bull it makes me wonder! You're ready to spend that much on a breeding bull for 2 calves a year?
@ThePasturedHomestead
@ThePasturedHomestead Жыл бұрын
Thats a good point! But yes we are. We have a lot of pasture for them so we will only feed hay 3-4 months out of the year. And hopefully this next year we will be taking our own hay from property so there might not be a cost in it for us.

I am pleased you decided to make your Jersey bull into a steer, A jersey steer is lovely but a jersey bull is downright vicious - most farmers/homesteaders give a steer 18 -24 months to grow big enough to put in the freezer - if you are wanting to breed for a homesteaders milking cow try an American Milking Devon bull - really nice nature
