Deciding to run the play late was horrible leadership and poor football knowledge. He can learn and get better but that part is on him as well. That said, the coach who put his rookie in that situation is still mostly to blame here. He could have protected his rookie from that situation but instead he left him out there to fail.

When there’s 30 seconds left and you’re trying to give your QB the whole field to work with. You save the TO so the kicker can get on the field. This decision isn’t nearly as bad as people made it out to be. You either have to go faster or take the TO. The Bears decided to go slow and not take the TO. Ultimately the coach is on the line, but a good QB would never let the situation unfold the way it did either.
@pbracken1989
@pbracken1989 Ай бұрын
I don't think you need the TO here but the offensive players all need to know that so they see the sack and get back to the line asap. The sack happened around 30 seconds, it is possible to get that next play off in 10-12 seconds if everyone is in sync but they weren't.

@@michaelmccullough5408 disagree tbh. They should have a play that would be an 8-10 yard completion they can quickly get to. Also what QB burns 30 odd seconds of clock, about 18 seconds of which they were lined up for, in a 2 min drill. Just a mess. I think both the coach and Caleb Williams were at fault. But the Bears organization isn't going to bury their No. 1 overall pick QB, so they fire the coach. Your options here are basically to call timeout right away, with 32 seconds, or to try to run another play quickly and save the timeout so you can call it right before the last-second field goal. Odds are they called two plays. Run one, get down, run the next, call timeout, kick the field goal. That didn't work because Caleb took forever to snap the ball. So in retrospect, should have called TO immediately and set up a quick pass to the sideline. But if Caleb just snaps the ball for the final pass play with 12 or 15 seconds left, this is all a non-issue. When he snapped it with 6 seconds, they could no longer use the timeout and were basically screwed unless they scored.
@jamesp6805
@jamesp6805 Ай бұрын
This sequence was such a cluster. From the right tackle giving the DE a straight path to the QB, to the two linemen standing over Caleb to help him up and the three of them as a group moving in virtual slow motion with no sense of urgency to get the next play going, to the total lack of leadership on the Offensive line (Jason Kelce would have stepped in quickly early on and got things moving), to the apparent clueless, glazed look of Caleb during the entire sequence and his total lack of situational awareness, to the next play not being called in advance, to the wide receivers not being lined up properly. The ironic part to me is that even if that last timeout was called, there is absolutely no guarantee that a QB with zero clock management skills would have been aware enough after the next play was run to get the field goal team on the field if a first down wasn't made on a completed pass. Net result of all this is the QB with an IQ of 80 and an Offensive line with no leaders got their coach rightfully fired. Know the room Eberflus--- As HC you have to know your QB is challenged mentally and your O line lacks leadership and talent.

Caleb was awful in this situation no urgency get the ball snapped quick completion and take the timeout
@dannymurray1854
@dannymurray1854 Ай бұрын
With one timeout, you use the timeout to stop the clock and bring out the field goal team. Honestly? Everything was done right because after the sack you want to kill time so you take the long field goal to overtime. Best case scenario you have a 45-60 yard field goal so Caleb should snap it at 12 seconds, throw a high percentage 10 yard pass over the middle and go down and timeout. Why he bombed it to the endzone is beyond comprehension
@bobquznie
@bobquznie Ай бұрын
Williams took a shot because he knew they ran outta time. The throw wasn't the issue, everything that led to the throw was the issue.
@Adam-xe5xm
@Adam-xe5xm Ай бұрын
@@bobquznie He either thought they were out of timeouts or lost track of the clock. Either way he needs to hurry up and throw something 8-10 yards down the field (towards the sideline if he thought they were out of timeouts). The choice of play is stupid as well. Its 3rd down. If he thinks they will only get one shot into the endzone and they are out of field goal range he can clock it and throw it on 4th down after getting set. Everything he did from the moment he snapped the ball on 2nd down was wrong. We arent seriously going to pretend checking into a deep shot vs that shell defence was the sound choice there. I think he was overwhelmed and his HC did nothing to help him.

@@yahooarchie8306 that is true but also he had Brady for soooo long of time that it took away a lot of opportunities for him to be successful with someone else. After what we saw after Brady I would say that he did not help develop Brady because he couldn’t seem to develop his next couple of QBs but even that is hard to say since those others may not have had success with any other highly successful coach either. All we can do is play the hypothetical game.

It comes down to this: You have a ROOKIE QB, an OC you just promoted to OC, and a Head Coach WITH A TIMEOUT LEFT. And either the OC or HC had a direct line to the QB's helmet. And, it's worth noting that the Bears have now LOST FOUR GAMES ON THE LAST POSSESSION! That's remarkably bad. While you can shift some of the blame to the QB for not getting the play off, this ultimately falls completely on the HC for not taking the timeout to get everything settled and get at least one play run. And whether you agree or disagree that this falls on the HC, the Bears front office saw it the same as I do.
@Guidowint
@Guidowint Ай бұрын
This is on Caleb. He took way too long to snap it and changed the play that was given to him right away. The coach definitely should have called a timeout after Caleb wasted an extra 15+ seconds. The plan was to get as many yards as you can in 25 seconds and call a timeout for the field goal with a few seconds remaining to set up a field goal that isn’t rushed.
@StewMain6
@StewMain6 Ай бұрын
This was one of the biggest blunders I’ve ever seen from a HC. Caleb should have called a timeout. However by default, this is on the HC because once the QB didn’t, you are right there to call the timeout

If they had taken a short completion then called the clock it would have made more sense as to why they didn’t call one before the play. I personally think it’s smarter to the run the play, get a short gain and call your timeout to give your kicker time to set up properly and not be rushed.
@kingdomcitizenship5613
@kingdomcitizenship5613 Ай бұрын
I guarantee they call a short pass to get them closer, it wasn't open, and instead of Caleb throwing it away, he started looking at other options and wasted time. This on the QB. And instead of throwing the rookie under the bus, he fell on the sword like a leader. Only problem with that, is now he's getting killed in the media and it will probably affect his ability to land another NFL head coaching job.
