Lil Ryan Clarke story: I was a Bills fan growing up in the Buffalo area and I went to a preseason game against the Steelers when I was a little kid just really getting into football. My mom wanted to get us tickets behind the Bills bench so I could ask players for autographs but accidentally got them behind the Steelers chance. I wore all Bills gear to the game, but when we found out we were behind the Steelers bench, my Mom got me a little Steelers hat to try to get Steelers players autographs. The whole game I was asking Steelers players for autographs and none of them would. Towards the end I got Ryan Clarke’s attention and he signed the hat, the only player that did. I was so excited and I’ve been a fan since

@rychmckenzie7881
@rychmckenzie7881 3 жыл бұрын
@@onnak the maths isn't hard but what you have to take into account is the fact if we didn't have kickers the game of football would be different, we wouldn't kick a FG at the 1 (we were inside the 10 on both) and would likely score. Even if you don't want to make that projection its fairly obvious we play the 2nd half differently if we're only 6 points ahead.

I mean literally every position can do that. Hail Marys, Pick 6s, Fumble Returns, Sacks, and obviously scoring a TD, can bring hundreds of thousands (that feels like too many but whatever) to their feet in victory and 'rip your heart out in defeat...' as well. Well I guess Punter doesn't really do that... unless he literally Punts the ball away while his team is losing by 1-6 pts, then the returner fumbles it, and the Punter recovers the ball on a bounce and outruns literal world-class sprinters to the end zone.

If you've never played, you'd be amazed at how much trash talk punters and kickers have to deal with. In college our kicker was All American, only guy on the team to get that accolade. Everyone respected him. But the punter was trash. He daily had to deal with people giving him crap about how he isn't an athlete and was only technically a football player. Horrible team environment of course. Horrible team too. But that's the mentality on many teams. So yeah, your team may have been a brotherhood and the punter was one of the guys, but on a trash team with trash players, the punter/kicker gets it worse than anyone. Everyone needs a punching bag :/
@wyomingptt
@wyomingptt 4 жыл бұрын
I know that was supposed to sound smart but if you take a few seconds to think about that.... I mean.. literally every position on the team decides field position lol........ You've heard of receptions, rushes, sacks, INTs, fumbles and fumble recoveries, and punts right? All of those influence field position and arguably more than a kick off which is the only time a kicker has anything to do with field position. Maybe you meant Punters, but even still they can only do so much (if the Jets had the greatest Punter who ever lived, do you think their record would be much better than it currently is? I don't.) and even still that relies on an entire "return _team"_ a lot of the time to effectively work.

Once upon a time, position players were punters and kickers. Lou Groza was an offensive lineman, Pat Summerall was a TE and in the days before the forward pass and a short time after, QB’s were also running backs. As the game progressed and field position and scoring points from long distance became more important, the kickers became more of a specialty position. Hell, Mark Mosley was the last straight kicker in the league. Ever since Pete Gogolak came with soccer style kicking, kickers tend to be more former soccer players than position players.

The kicker is one of the most essential and most unappreciated positions imo. They may not have to physically exert themselves, but when in range you're team is still able to put points on the board when the offense has a unsuccessful drive. When either winning or tying a game comes down to the kicker (which often does) then he becomes the most important at that moment.....When the kick is good and you win, that is equivalent to winning a basketball game with a buzzer beater. If he misses.........you have the entire team and fans pissed at you. Other positions are able to screw up once and a while or a few times in a game. But Kicker is not allowed that leniency. And yes, the kicker has one Job.. and one job only... It shouldn't take away from the necessity or make them any less of a team member.

We know the importance of a kicker because of how the game is constructed currently. The point is the athletes who are in the NFL shouldn't be having to put their bodies on the line for some 5'6 135 lb chess player. You should have every player in the NFL have the same level of physical dedication. Name a sport where that doesn't apply?
@dvs620
@dvs620 3 жыл бұрын
@@socorio4100 So, why don't the "real" players just handle the kicking duties? If you get rid of the kickers, that's 2 more roster spots for "real" players. While we're at it, teach the center to long snap and eliminate the long snapper. That's 3 extra spots you can have. Oh, while you're at it, eliminate the return specialist, like a Devin Hester type. Special teams are considered one of the 3 phases of a football game. So anyone playing in any of the 3 phases of a football game are considered football players. Don't like it, eliminate special teams.
@socorio4100
@socorio4100 3 жыл бұрын
@@dvs620 Did you miss where I said "how the game is currently constructed"? It appears you glossed over that completely and just repeated the same premise as the person who's comment I responded to I absolutely would support getting rid of special teams. Less injuries to real football players (on kickoffs/punt coverage). There are many ways you can do this I would start the convo by saying just put the ball at the 25 after every score. 6 pts per td. This doesn't effect the history of the game because nobody cares about kicking stats to begin with. The best kicker ever is going to retire in 3-5 years anyway

I wasn't a kicker but took pride in our squad.kickers and punters decide how hard the offence and defense has to play by the job he does in ball placement. From onside kicks,field goals,punts,kick offs,and extra points are a big factor at what the score board says at the end of the game period. Teams don't win games just because of offence and defense only,but the hard work as a team and offence,defense,and special teams together.
