Hi guys, and welcome back to my channel! If you’re new here, my name’s Rachel and I’m a huge Eurovision fan as well as a musician.
In today’s video, I reacted to Czechia’s entry for Eurovision 2023, ‘My Sister’s Crown’ by Vesna.
From start to finish, this track was captivating and full of very interesting musical ideas. Rap like portions followed by angelic choral singing create a really intriguing atmosphere and grab the listeners attention.
The lyrical content and use of language are very poignant and moving. It made me very emotional - a faultless piece of experimental and traditional music.
Initial Score: 10/10

The languages used is Czech, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian, each representing a different branch of Slavic languages: Western, Eastern, and Southern Slavic, respectively. The band is also quite international itself (there are Czech, Slovak, Bulgarian, Russian members), and the song started as celebrating the diversity of the group, and then turned into a more general reflection on the Slavic woman as such. The band embrased the pro-Ukrainian interpretation of the lyrics as well.

Wow, thank you for defining it as 'pure art'. When I first heard our entry, I knew we were onto something special. I just hope the organisers don't kill our chances AGAIN by putting us on too early. 4 times in the final, we've been in position 1, 2, 3 (in the first half) and the first song on in the second half. So, I'm fully expecting to get screwed by the organisers again. Love from the Czech Republic.

There are actually 3 different Slavic languages, each one for a different Slavic language family (western - Czech, eastern - Ukrainian, southern - Bulgarian) so it kinda symbolizes all the Slavic nations, with our similar languages, related culture, traditions, history... related just like the sisters in the video. Plus the members are from various Slavic nations - three are Czechs, one is Slovak, one is Bulgarian and one is Russian (+ they've also collaborated with one Ukrainian). And the song is about the support to our Slavic Ukrainian sister who is in need. I can't even say how happy I am for seeing my country sending this time something more traditional, ethnic, with (also) Czech language... something that I've been waiting for years 🤩 Btw. just to let you know - the group is called after Vesna - an old Slavic pagan goddess of spring and fertility 😊

The chorus really set something really deep in me too. the use of czech, english, bulgarian and ukrainian is such a great use of the idea that "the medium is the message". "се́стро" in the Ukrainian chorus, the vocative form, so "o sister" in english makes it very clear who they address their song to as well. really really layered and interesting.

I noticed that (for women especially) the moment where "Lady Ukraine" releases herself from the Stick-men, that is the moment where everybody tears up. And whether or not that has to do with personal experience (projecting memories of when you as a person felt trapped or unsafe) or the hope for Ukraine's "escape", I mean, I don't know which one it is, but that's a similarity that I noticed in all video's. If someone cries, it's thát moment.

Vesna has to win the ESC. I voted for them and I will again in the finals. Their message is so important und beautiful as well as the song and also.. for fuck's sake Czechia has to WIN sometime! FINALLY some Czech lyrics and traditional elements in their song! Please everyone - let Czechia know how beautiful and wanted their language and traditional music is so they keep up with stuff like this and take it further until hopefully someday there is a song completely in Czech and completely (or at least mostly) traditional! Czechia has such a wonderful culture and it's so sad noone in the ESC got to see it all those years. And even now it's not only Czech, it's slavic. I'm so in love with Czechia, especially the language and traditional music for 2 years now. So much that I'm even learning the language, although it's really hard xP But I just love it. I think in general ESC should be less mainstream and more traditional and truly representative for each country! Greets from Germany

And Czechs themselves should appreciate their language and their culture so much more, because it's so beautiful and unique💜😊 why do you feel like it wasn't "good enough"? That's totally incomprehensible to me... I know Slovaks are very proud of their culture and language, but why aren't Czech people? This is one of the most powerful songs from this year's ESC, I love it. Top 10 material for me, I got stunned even at the very first listen and even if I don't know a single word of Czech language (I'm Italian). Then I looked at the translation and I was even more emotional at subsequent listens. Well done, Vesna! You should also search for song interpretation to see more widespread view on this song. As far I know. Vesna is a folk band - Vesna is a pagan Slavic God. In the band there are Czech, Slovak and Russian girls (i hope i didn't make a mistake). This song is kind of anti-war song. They have inspiration by Slavic culture but it is more universal for Slavic countries I think and not limited to one nation. For me this song has also connotations with feminism. I think it's quite good inspiration of discussion about taking power by women to change spoiled old men energy. Besides for example Poland is She. In Slavic culture woman has also quite specific position. In Polish catholic church we have strong God Mother cult as she takes care of our country. Somehow for me is a calling for being united and not forgetting that we all in the region are Slavic nations and we should be together and not getting into conflicts. Of course there is a connotation with war in Ukraine. That war has strong impact on Poland, Czech Republic or Baltic States and other countries in the region. And of course there is a mix of languages - Czech, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and English.

I watched all 37 in their full. This is the winner in my opinion. Loreen is very talented but this is just as good and relevant. When music hits your soul homie that's what your suppose to do. Luv from NYC 🇺🇸

I agree. Loreen is good, but this is way deeper, fresher and all-around better and touches on the NOW as well as the eternal. It's searingly beautiful and soulful in a way Tattoo cannot touch.

This is one of the most stunning music videos I have ever seen, creepy, powerful, colourful, just incredible. And the song the voices are spectacular together with the beat. Finally, a strong political message - I would fight against the dark side with this song in the back...... a very strong contribution, stunning.

Girl I have the same exact reation and I don´t even speak any of the languages other than english. The Chorus gets me EVERY time. There hasn´t been a single song that emotionally touches in that way without involving lyrics. Genuine goosebumps. I fear it won´t make it far in the contest but it sure as hell is one of my personal favourites

Rachel, this song is an absolute masterpiece. No wonder it made you cry 😀 Dare I say it’s better than Lights Off …? In some ways, yes. That bit that starts at 2:09 which made you go “Wow” - that got me too, especially the second time through when all the synths come in full power. It’s the highlight of the song for me. I watched the performance of this song at the national selection final, and found it a little bit bit clunky and awkward, performance-wise. But I have high hopes that somebody’s going to choreograph something good for Eurovision. It can’t not qualify for the final, can it?

Im really curious see how they end up staging it, ESCZ was a bit of a slop this year but hey, first year with a live nf will do that. I really like the song and Im sure it can do fantastic in Liverpool. Currently my second place, 10/10
