Thank you, Emily. Shading the dark edge/line (around 3:41), should the dark edge/line still show after the shading? Why are we shading the it?✏
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline Жыл бұрын
The idea is to create a line that has very soft edges. Its difficult to just draw a line with soft edges so instead we can shade one or shade over one to give it that softness. The line underneath should mostly disappear under the shading. This type of line could be good for edges in the background of a drawing or for edges of a shadow. Hope that helps!

Thank you Emily. I love your soft, gentle, calm, relaxing voice and teaching style. Your explanations are clear and you certainly simply things. I have wanted to draw for so long and I actually feel like I’m making progress following your lessons. I’d love to post my progress & get your critique, but I’m not a fan of FB 😊. I have a loooooong way to go but I can tell you that I can actually recognise what I am drawing from your lessons. That’s progress, right!? 😂 Thank you for your time and for this course.

Thanks for your kind words Gary. I'm not a fan of FB either and I often don't get the notifications so you may not get feedback there for a while anyway 😅 Glad to hear you are making progress! Just keep going and you'll keep improving - sometimes the progress might plateau which doesn't feel great but if you can push through those times, the practice pays off! If you do ever decide you'd like some detailed feedback of any of your drawings, my membership is where I put most of my focus. There is a charge of $20 per month but you can send me a bunch of work and I'll critique it for you. Otherwise just keep practicing! Best of luck 😊

@@ThePencilRoomOnline thanks Emily. Very much appreciated. Glad to hear it’s not just me re FB 😅 I’ll certainly keep going. I do struggle with the shading especially the shadows but… it’s early days 😉 Thanks for the subscription info too. As a matter of interest, I’ve picked up your Kiwi accent, I hope 😬 - is that $20 US or NZ? In the meantime, I’ll keep penciling in my pencil room. Take care!

I prefer the first way to draw the leaf as I always use this method to draw. I find that when I’m drawing something from a picture or real life object I draw exactly the same size if I want to draw it a bit bigger I struggle it always turns out the exactly same size any advice on how to increase the size please
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 5 ай бұрын
It's difficult to change the size of your natural drawing if you are using contour drawing methods. Instead you can use proportion skills to 'map out' how big you want your drawing to be. Everyone has a natural tendency to draw big or small so to go against that you need to spend more time planning the drawing with proportions first. Hope that helps :)

Im afraid i dont get this one. Took me ungodly amount of time to repeat that leaf. Way way more then it should. I have trouble doing this whole "draw at the same time as you look" thing and i dont really understand or see different edges.
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 6 ай бұрын
It's a different approach to the other videos which start with simplifying shapes. This video is more about practicing looking in a different way and recording what you see as you go slowly around the edge. It does take practice but it's also not a vital skill to have at this stage, especially if you are focusing more on geometric shaped based subjects and drawing with that simplifying process. Instead of trying to see different edges, take a look at the leaf again and see if you can see where light is hitting more on some edges than others (it is a very subtle change in colour or value). All we are really doing is emphasising where the light or shadow is by using a thinner or thicker line. If you want to face the challenge you could check out my other videos on continuous line drawing: How To Do Contour Drawing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqKxfq2Fl5J3j5o Continuous Line Drawing Of Your Hand kzbin.info/www/bejne/emm3ZYuijaapirM But if it's not for you at this stage, don't worry! Thanks for your comment 🙂

My 2025 goal is to finally get serious with learning how to draw in general, but My ultimate goal is to learn how to draw portraits. I have been watching your videos on KZbin for weeks, and finally ventured over to your web site. Can you make some suggestions about where I should begin to achieve this goal?
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 20 күн бұрын
Hi Shannon, This series on KZbin is a good start. You can go through it several times and use the exercises as a guide to practice your own subjects. If you want to take things further on the website and you are interested in drawing portraits then you could dive straight into How To Draw Realistic Faces. It is aimed at beginners with some basic drawing skills. Here's the trailer (and a discount code in the description!): kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqrZZIKFdtaFepo Or if you want to do some more general practice and develop a good practice habit before tackling portraits, my SketchClub membership lets you try everything for $20 a month and you can cancel whenever you like. You'll find a sign up button on the page of the same link above. Thanks for your interest!

What is being done her, with the leaf, isn't nearly as easy as it appears to be! A few folks can do it. I saw my mother draw by looking at a photo of some birds. When she was done it looked exactly like the birds in the picture. I was amazed! That started my interest in drawing. Yet, even today I have difficulty in drawing an object by looking at a photo and getting it as good as she did. She could draw it the same size but, couldn't get it to look right drawing it larger. She said she draws what she sees in the proportion she sees it and could do it any larger. To bad she wasn't aware of the methods that are used to draw it larger.
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 7 ай бұрын
That's interesting about your mother being able to draw at the same size! Getting proportions correct with contour drawing like in this video gets easier the more you do it. Speaking of drawing size, I definitely find that students and myself included have a comfortable drawing size that is unique - some people naturally draw small and some people naturally draw large (some people like your mother just have a good eye!). But yes it's good we have methods to check proportions at any size! Thanks for your comment and for watching :)
