I have now watched several of your videos on your lessons for those with interest in or, just beginning to draw. I must say, you are a superb instructor!!! Everything thing you say and show are in fact very important to learn and do. Why?! Because everything you teach will be used in some form or fashion regardless of what a person decides to draw! With out practice in the skills you teach a person will never achieve the level of results in their drawings that they may desire it to be. Practice, practice, practice. With out it you'll never become proficient in drawing. In fact, almost anything you do in life requires practice to become very good at what you do and don't forget to continually learn new things to improve your skills!

What is being done her, with the leaf, isn't nearly as easy as it appears to be! A few folks can do it. I saw my mother draw by looking at a photo of some birds. When she was done it looked exactly like the birds in the picture. I was amazed! That started my interest in drawing. Yet, even today I have difficulty in drawing an object by looking at a photo and getting it as good as she did. She could draw it the same size but, couldn't get it to look right drawing it larger. She said she draws what she sees in the proportion she sees it and could do it any larger. To bad she wasn't aware of the methods that are used to draw it larger.

That's interesting about your mother being able to draw at the same size! Getting proportions correct with contour drawing like in this video gets easier the more you do it. Speaking of drawing size, I definitely find that students and myself included have a comfortable drawing size that is unique - some people naturally draw small and some people naturally draw large (some people like your mother just have a good eye!). But yes it's good we have methods to check proportions at any size! Thanks for your comment and for watching :)

Emily, I am in my mid sixties and have just embarked on a desire to draw & paint. I happened upon your videos by accident when looking for drawing tuition. I had no idea that there was any other way to hold a pencil apart from the one that I was taught. I couldn't sleep last night and decided to watch some videos on drawing. I started out with the Standard grip with some success, but then changed to the Loose grip, the results were much better and I found that I could be more fluid in my drawing. Thanks for teaching this Middle-aged dog some new tricks.

I really wish I could draw with my elbow and shoulder. I have motor coordination issues due to a neurological disorder and I'm constantly trembling, so my arms are very unstable. Wrist drawing provides me with more stability, but its a problem for long flowy lines... and I also ended up with an injury that wont go away. If people can, they should really invest in learning how to draw with their elbow and shoulder.

Thank you for sharing this. Can you tell us how to draw the perspective lines if your vanishing point is way outside the edges of your paper? Like if your are working from life & want to draw a building. Many thanks
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 12 күн бұрын
That's a tricky one as its actually quite difficult to see the perspective by eye when you are drawing from real life - at least not without a measuring tool. You can use a pencil lined up with the angles of the top and bottom edges of a building and then name that angle (eg. 30 degrees) and draw that same angles in your sketchbook. That will give you a basic idea of where the vanishing points might be outside your piece of paper. You can then use your knowledge of 2pt perspective to make sure everything fits with the rules: eg. everything above eye level will slant downwards towards vanishing point, everything below eye level will slant upwards towards vanishing point. Hope that makes sense :) So its a mixture of observation and estimation. Which is why it's very useful to do the basic box exercises for 1pt and 2pt perspective to have a really good understanding of how it works!

I love your videos. They're very helpful. I subscribed to your beginner class and am excited to get started. I'm 47 and always wanted to learn to draw and paint. Hopefully I can do it. I've taken classes in the past but they didn't stick. Going to try to take it more seriously this time. I've done acting and music, now it's time to learn this part of art.

Glad you've found the videos helpful! It's always hard to stick with something to get through the beginner stage. I think the key is to keep it consistent (like exercise) but to not take on too much at the start. You might think you can practice five times a week but its probably better to practice 2-3 times a week and be really consistent with it. Best of luck!

Do you sharpen tortillons the same way as blending stumps?
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 12 күн бұрын
You probably can but I don't sharpen the tortillons. They tend to get a bit fluffy when you use sandpaper to clean them, because of the ridges of paper. Tortillons also have a slightly rounded end which is quite nice to work with so I just rub them clean on a spare piece of paper :)

I have been doing a lot of redrawing of other peoples art. I find it much more fun then doin geometric shapes. Im not sure if it teaches anythingg but i think it helps with understanding proportions. Occasionally i can get a character shape that is almost as good as the original and kinda nice to look at. I just eyeball it and edit it over and over again until its good enough.
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 12 күн бұрын
Any kind of practice will help. I guess what you might find hard if you only practice redrawing other peoples art, is how to build an original drawing from scratch because it really does come down to starting with visualising and drawing simplified shapes first.

Wow I have never drawn anything before. I've completed your lessons within a week and now I can at least draw circles, ellipses and shapes so much much better. You're a fantastic teacher and you really helped me to push through. When you've never drawn facing yiur first blank page is terrifying. When I perform live, I have no fear, but drawing is scary because of the fact that as a newbie chances are you may fail horrendously. I've got new hope that I may actually be able to develop the skills to do this!!! Thank you so much.

Thanks for your comment, its great to hear your perspective. I find performing live terrifying...😅 so Im glad to hear these videos have made drawing less scary! Keep in mind that drawing is all about failing. In every drawing I fail and correct my mistakes, fail and correct. It will never be perfect from the first mark which can be demoralising until you realise it is actually all part of the drawing process :)

@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 26 күн бұрын
There's not really any instant fix except to keep working on what you find difficult and identify what is going wrong. Often with cubes it is the angles that people have trouble with. The vertical lines are always straight up and down and the horizontal lines are always straight across. The angled lines should be all on exactly the SAME angle if you are practicing these 'isometric' cubes which have no perspective. So that's one thing to check. Use a straight edge of something to see if all the angles for one cube are exactly the same direction and length. The good news is that if you are doing well with cones and cylinders then eventually you'll figure out the cubes. It just takes time :)

@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline Ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes rest your hand of the page so it is comfortable and you have control and support, but allow the side of the hand to slide across the page if you can. Moving your hand with the line gives you more range of movement when doing longer strokes. Eventually you might like to try the overhand grip where the hand hovers above the page - it gives you even more freedom to move but it's really only more useful for large drawings or working at an easel (it's a bit overrated in my opinion). You can check out the different grips here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWiTqn1pa8uBjsU Thanks for watching!
