Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria were not the correct (original) names of the ships when Columbus got them for his voyage in 1492. In Columbus' time it was the custom in Spain to name ships after saints and to call them by nicknames instead. The original name of La Niña has been 'Santa Clara', the original name of the Santa Maria has been 'La Gallega'- the original name of the Pinta unfortunately is unknown. The Niña: Has been Columbus' favorite ship and has been involved in 3 of his voyages (1492, 1493, 1498) and according to documents apparently got sold in 1499- in 1501 she made a trading voyage to Venezuela which has been the last glimpse of her. The Pinta: After having returned to Spain from the first voyage she simply vanished, not one record has been found of her fate.

What was not discussed was Columbus's treatment of the indigenous people he came in contact with. He enslaved many he came in contact with and sold many others into slavery. That is, however, fairly common as continued expeditions in the new world by the Spanish occurred.

@@darrenrichards3100 I think Columbus was a hideous person, so I am no fan of him or a single thing he did... but I don't get why people always have to pull out the cliché of "he didn't DISCOVER anything, there were people there already" - like, that's clearly not what is meant when we say he "discovered" America. Of course the people who lived there discovered the land first. But from the point of view of the Old World he was making discoveries, since he found a place no one in the Old World (his audience, for want of a better word) knew existed. No offense I just always thought that was such a silly point to hang onto when Columbus was such a thoroughly odious man and there are PLENTY of other things to criticise about him and his mythos, rather than getting hung up on the semantics of the word "discover"....

I bet not many Americans know that their country was named after a Florentine sailor, who felt compelled, for whatever reason, to diverge into real estate/frontier promotion. And I'm guessing pamphlets weren't cheap in the 1400's, so it's more than likely he was advertising the 'new world' in the aim of a profitable outcome.

In 1507, Martin Waldseemüller drew a world map with the help of Matthias Ringmann - the first world map in which what we now know as America was marked as a separate large continent. Quite simple: Back then, there has not been a common italian language like we know it today- just an array of different dialectical types of 'vulgar latin'. Aside: He DID write some notes/comments/sidemarks in 'italian' into books that he's been reading/studying back in his days, but mostly he used the spanish language. Those 'alternative facts' that he's really been portuguese are BS alltogether, wishful thinking at best. In the end it does not really matter that much anyways, where he originated from, because: Whatever he did, whatever he's achieved- he did it for the Kingdom of Spain. Por Castilla y por Leon.

@@lxportugal9343 you know that back then it wasn't Portuguese but galician-portuguese and many Castilian monarchs and nobles used it back then in "la corte", right? Ohhh no you didn't. Well yes it was used and he had to use it to comunicate, apart from that he knew many languages and knowing he had to request approval for travelling, he came to many countries/monarchies and had to be in contact with Galicians and Portuguese for sailing, is only normal. But hey it's okay his DNA (and his descendants) talked from him, so you don't have to worry😊.

Columbus was not Italian. He was Catalan. He came from a prominent merchant family from Barcelona and his brother was president of the community of Barcelona. You won't find a scrap of paper of his written in italian, only in perfect Spanish. Last name: Colom. There is a statue of Colombus in Barcelona. The Catalans were outstanding merchants and sailors in the middle ages with small colonies and outposts scattered across the Mediterranean.

Because of his so called "exploration" the spread of Old World diseases, including smallpox, influenza, and typhus, led to the deaths of many indigenous inhabitants of the New World. Contrary to popular belief, the conquistadors were not trained warriors, but mostly artisans seeking an opportunity to advance their wealth and fame. After some newfound wealth, the division of the booty produced bloody conflicts, such as the one between Pizarro and De Almagro...............Ain't one of my favorites

@user-rj9qt2mh4o actually the video doesn't depict that sentiment at all. As well, if you base opinions on historical figures by removing their motives outside the historical context, and relying on a youtube video as your evidence for how to interpret a figure fron the past, well that's just ridiculous.

No one claims that Columbus discovered it for the whole human race. For example: even though they weren't scientifically advanced enough yet to do so, imagine if a Taino explorer had reached Ireland. Obviously, he wouldn't be "discovering" it as far as the Irish were concerned. But he definitely would have been the first Amerindian to find it. This is the situation with Columbus: he most definitely did discover South America for the Europeans. Hope this helps!

@@MichaelLeBlanc-p4f so because you claim, most Italians didn’t speak Italian 😒 till 1800, so what language did they speak? Where did you get that idea from that most Italians did speak Italian till the 19th Century? So because you think he didn’t speak Italian you would still claim he was Italian? The Italian language first started to diverge from Latin in the 5th century after the fall of the Roman Empire. However, this was a slow process! It wasn't until around the 10th century that texts were written in the Italian language, gradually becoming more popular through the use of Italian in literature and poetry. The language that came to be thought of as Italian developed in central Tuscany and was first formalized in the early 14th century through the works of Tuscan writer Dante Alighieri, written in his native Florentine.
