How can you accurately and honestly measure a nation's economic future or fortunes when the USA IMPOSES ECONOMIC SANCTIONS on your nation? Especially if it chooses the path it BEGAN (and never got to complete) under LEGALLY ELECTED President Salvador Allende. SURELY the USA's CIA supported this MILITARY COUP. He actually did. Just imagine if Chile turned into Cuba or other Communist countries. Now his methods of how he went about it is what made him look more infamous but he gets a lot of bad rep when Genghis Khan, the American settlers and other world leaders throughout history practice mass genocide but it's not looked at the same when a Latin leader chooses to be ruthless. They put him in categories with Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini which I think is not very fair considering what would have happened if the Communist would have took over Chile. It was awful what was done to alot of innocent Chileans but I don't know what was he suppose to do. I mean just look at Cuba and North Korea.

@@alfredosenalle9284 Everyone in Chile thinks that's bullshit, only the rich say that and that's because most rich people didn't suffer as much with the consequences of the dictatorship, like the 1982 crisis (yes, chile got worse with pinochet in charge than with allende) and the many human right violations, false accusations, kidnappings, even house wives got accussed of plotting so the military junta could create excuses for the crimes, obviously all of that got debunked after the return to the democracy

@@gremlin_uwu Look arguing with communist lovers is hopeless. I sincerely hope that communist gets to Chile one day. This is the only way they'll get their head out of their asses and throw away their love of communism. Of course as in every country like Cuba , Venezuela or Nicaragua where they take power , THEY WONT GIVE IT BACK. Next thing we're going to see is the big number of Chilean immigrants crossing the US border. History repeats itself because human beings just don't learn from the suffering of others.

I was a teenager when Allende was elected president, I had no prejudice against him, and I hoped that he made a good government. But since the very beginning of Allende’s government, it was chaos in the economics, in politics, in everything, violence, hatred, etc.: it was the worst government we ever had. Allende and his coalition intended to impose a communist regime; most of Chileans were very happy that Pinochet overthrew Allende. The violence of Pinochet’s regime was a response to the violence of Allende’s supporters. I don't endorse the brutality, but I understand it.

In the first months after the coup d'état, the military killed thousands of Chilean leftists, both real and suspected, or forced their "disappearance". The military imprisoned 40,000 political enemies in the National Stadium of Chile; among the tortured and killed desaparecidos (disappeared) were the U.S. citizens Charles Horman and Frank Teruggi.[71] In October 1973, the Chilean songwriter Víctor Jara was murdered, along with 70 other people in a series of killings perpetrated by the death squad Caravan of Death (Caravana de la Muerte).

There is no version of 10's of thousands of refugees who fled to the US to seek asylum as was the case of Cuba. The Communists in Latin America were ruthless, so, he knew that his enemies would do what they did in Cuba. It's not the Chileans that immigrate to the U.S. In fact, in South America they immigrate to Chile because of the safety and economic stability due to the strength and policies that the Chilean military government of 1973-1990 created. Another fact, on Sunday the Chilean people voted to keep the nations constitution that the military government created.

A great president who set the road to development of our economy. From being the poorest country in Latam, we became the most developed one. He understood the needs of Chile and after he stepped down from power, the country had its glorious 30 best years, until Bachelet came to power and started the declining of the economy with social unrest, that follow during Piñera's second term to finish up with the marxist Boric, who will give the final blow to one of the most successful country ever in Laram. Pinochet gave the base for the strongest right and center right ideas in the area. He left with a 45% support and that has hold until now with a 47 %. He is still loved and remember, especially today, when we watch how communists are destroying our nation.

It's very interesting to me that there are many similarities between Franco and Pinochet. Unless you lived in these countries, it would be hard to understand the actual realities. Just to clarify a few things: Only those who lived through, like my parents and grandparents, the disastrous government of Salvador Allende, know and value that Pinochet has taken power to free them from that yoke. On the other hand, in the hearts of Chileans, General Carrera and Manuel Rodríguez live as liberators of the country, not General O'higgins. Finally, on September 4, 2022, Chile became the only country in the world to defeat communism twice, which only brings hunger and misery in the countries where it governs, and the best thing is that this time it was by democratic means. . Long live freedom, death to communism. And it is also necessary to clarify that the violence in Chile began in Concepción in 1965 with the founding of the terrorist group of the extreme Left, MIR, Movement of the Revolutionary Left, which murdered police officers and innocent civilians, proclaiming the armed struggle to achieve socialism and the struggle of classes.

Indeed anyone who even just superficially studied the situation under Allende knows, that living standards completely imploded. The US was not aggressively sanctioning the country for purely political reasons, but also because another very likely dictator just stole massive amounts of assets from American corporations. Neither did they play a proactive role as suggested, instead the US refused multiple calls for help by Pinochet. And as you pointed out, Pinochet didn’t persecute or disappear “left leaning” opponents, but militant violent left wing extremists instead. Groups which would have likely spread terror had Allende not been defeated.

The debate surrounding Augusto Pinochet and Chile's free market policies can be controversial, but it is essential to distinguish fact from fiction. Pinochet seized power through a military coup in 1973, deposing and killing the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. His regime was characterized by human rights violations, such as torture and the forced disappearance of political opponents. During the Pinochet regime, Chile experienced a phase of economic liberalization characterized by the implementation of free market policies, including deregulation, privatization and trade liberalization. Although these policies stimulated economic growth, they also exacerbated inequality. It should be noted that copper played a crucial role in Chile's economy during this period. Copper exports have been an important economic engine for Chile, accounting for more than 50% of the country's exports. Despite the changes in government, fluctuations in copper prices have not had a significant impact on the Chilean economy. Income inequality has long been a major concern for policymakers and the public, even though economic growth has improved the standard of living for many citizens. However, there is still a wide gap between the rich and the rest of the population. This inequality has a social and political significance, giving rise to various protests and movements fighting for more justice. Education is a crucial element in combating inequality and, as you mentioned, obtaining a quality education has been a controversial issue. In Chile, the education system has a history of inequality in the distribution of funding, the quality of education and access. Efforts have been made to improve the inclusiveness and equity of the education system, including modifying funding mechanisms, and increasing public investment. It is possible that if Salvador Allende's democratic socialist government had not been removed from power, Chile would have followed a different economic path. Allende enacted policies of nationalization of industries and pursued an agenda of social reforms that met with opposition from various sectors, including economic elites and international interests. Speculating on how the Chilean economy would have developed under his leadership is a complex and speculative matter. It could have led to a more equitable distribution of wealth, but it could also have faced significant economic challenges, given the circumstances of the time. Facts about Cupper, 1-Chilean Copper Production: Chile is the world's largest producer of copper, contributing to over one-third of the world's copper production. 2-Key Mining Operations: The country's copper production is primarily derived from key mining operations such as Chuquicamata, Escondida, Collahuasi, and El Teniente, among others. 3-Significant Copper Exports: Copper exports play a crucial role in Chile's economy, typically representing a substantial portion of the country's total exports. 4-Economic Impact: Revenue generated from copper exports significantly contributes to Chile's economic stability and supports infrastructure and development projects. 5-Global Influence: Chile's prominent position in copper production and exports gives the country substantial influence in global metal markets. 6-Price Fluctuations: Fluctuations in copper prices can have profound effects, not only on the Chilean economy but also on international metal markets. 7-Economic Significance: The performance of the copper sector is of paramount importance to both Chile's economy and the global metal industry. Facts about Pinochet 1-Coup and Rise to Power: Pinochet came to power on September 11, 1973, through a military coup that ousted the democratically elected President Salvador Allende. He assumed control of Chile as the head of the military junta. 2-Military Rule: Pinochet's rule was characterized by a military dictatorship that lasted for 17 years, making it one of the longest-running military regimes in Latin American history. 3-Human Rights Violations: The Pinochet regime was notorious for its human rights abuses, including widespread torture, disappearances, and extrajudicial executions of political opponents. Thousands of Chileans suffered under his authoritarian rule. 4-Economic Policies: Pinochet implemented neoliberal economic policies during his tenure, which included privatization of state-owned enterprises, deregulation, and trade liberalization. These policies brought about economic growth but also increased income inequality in Chile. 5- Legal Issues: After leaving office, Pinochet faced legal challenges both in Chile and internationally for human rights violations committed during his regime. He was arrested in the United Kingdom in 1998 but was later released due to health reasons. He faced several legal proceedings in Chile as well. 6-Legacy: Pinochet's legacy remains highly controversial in Chile. While some credit him with stabilizing the economy, others condemn the human rights abuses that occurred under his rule. The impact of his regime continues to influence Chilean politics and society. Facts about Chile's inequality and education 1-High Levels of Educational Inequality: Chile has one of the highest levels of educational inequality among OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries. This inequality is often attributed to a dual education system, which includes both publicly funded and private schools. 2-Unequal Access to Quality Education: Chilean students attending private schools tend to have better access to quality education in terms of facilities, resources, and teacher qualifications compared to those in public schools. Public schools often face resource shortages and lower funding. 3-Segregation in Education: The Chilean education system has been criticized for perpetuating social and economic segregation. Many students from lower-income families attend public schools, while those from more affluent backgrounds attend private schools. This segregation is seen as a barrier to social mobility. 4-Student Protests: In recent years, Chile has seen widespread student protests advocating for educational reform. These protests have called for greater public investment in education, reduced tuition fees at universities, and improved access to quality education for all, irrespective of socio-economic background. 5-Reforms in Education: Chile has implemented some reforms in response to the protests and concerns about inequality. These reforms include changes in university financing, measures to improve the quality of education in public schools, and efforts to reduce the cost of education for students. 6-Inequality in Higher Education: Access to higher education in Chile has been marked by significant disparities. While there has been an increase in the number of students attending university, affordability remains a concern, and access to quality higher education can still depend on socio-economic factors. 7-Government Initiatives: The Chilean government has taken steps to address educational inequality, such as expanding early childhood education programs, increasing funding for public schools, and introducing policies to make higher education more accessible for low-income students. 8-PISA Scores: Chile's performance in international assessments such as the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) has highlighted educational disparities. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds tend to score lower on these assessments compared to their more privileged peers. 9-Teacher Quality: Improving the quality of teaching and teacher training is seen as an essential element in addressing educational inequality in Chile. .

In contrast with Pinochet, Pinilla decided to re-open the country to “Democracy” after 5 years of success. So, you're criticizing the economic growth under Pinochet? I don't remember you doing the same about Franco's rule. Even if it's obvious that economic success of Spain started after relaxation of foreign trade policy, that Franco implemented in the first place.

The South American Franco. He saved the country from Communism and set the economy on course to be relatively prosperous compared to its neighbours; but it came at a horrendous cost in repression, torture and state sponsored violence. I always find it interesting that he’s one of very few military dictators that in the end obeyed a referendum to hand over power to a democratic government.

Comparing Pinochetˇs rule to any Communist dictatorship his junta was less brutal, less destructive, less suppressing human rights. No consolation to his victims, I know. However, those days in Chile there was the only choice - either Pinochet, or the Cuban way. Allende´s marxist reforms caused such a deep decline of economics the country was left to rely on foreign support, either the US, or the Soviet one - and, consequently, keep the regime required by its patron. Moreover: Those days any coup, any revolution, especially in Latin America. brought brutality and killed numbers of people. Mostly much more than the Chilean coup. And the West usually did not mind at all. On condition the destruction and dead were the results of a leftist coup or revolution.

Very interesting reportage! Can you accept a suggestion? , although it is about Pinochet, adding who was his opposition and who finaced the opposition may have given some perspective that he was very likely fighting Cuba and the USSR. It doesn't make him any less brutal or deserving of a conviction for human rights violations though. Now please do one Fidel Castro... and his brother... can you do this while the criminals are still alive?
