Merci Dylane ! I’ve subscribed to Babbel and Memrise, and agree with your comments for both. I’ve never tried LingoPie, but it sounds interesting since my goal is to watch French TV and movies without subtitles. My other goal is to learn real spoken French, the way French people actually speak to friends and family, rather than « school French » or written French. So, with the exception of LingoPie, I think there is so much free content on KZbin that the other apps are not really worth the money. The main disadvantage that I have found with KZbin free content is that there is usually not any guidance on how to structure the videos…that is, what order is best to watch them for a more logical learning experience. Thank you for your videos and for these reviews !

I personally use Rosetta Stone in conjunction with French grammar books as well as watching your videos to help break down different concepts. I watch all of my tv shows in French and have my phone set in French. I like the immersion method. It really helps me to speak naturally. But I also use French grammar workbooks on the side as well as watching your videos. My goal is to read, speak, listen, and write fluently in French and I feel that the combination of Rosetta Stone plus studying my grammar books as well as watching your videos and watching tv in French has really advanced my French quite a bit! A year ago I could barely understand spoken French but now I can have a tv show or movie in French playing in the background at normal speed and still understand 80%-90% of what has been said. My ear is now very trained to the sounds of French. 🎉

Very helpful Dylane. Thank you for doing all the research. I use Pimsleur as it helps with listening, pronunciation, and "producing" - just getting the words out in a useful sentence, but I supplement it with other materials - and your online videos, of course. Thanks for the breakdown of the different apps available, the choices today are quite vast. I think the most important thing from my own perspective is to find maybe two or three apps that you like and get on with the task of learning the language. In the early days, I wasted far too much time checking every new app that came along, hoping for a silver bullet that would do away with having to do the work of learning the language. You are a great teacher and you always go the extra mile/kilometer to offer value for money, so many thanks, I wish you well.

I have both Lingo Pie and Memrise. I like both a lot. I like Lingo Pie for all of the reasons you stated, Dylane. For Memrise, I like that I can scroll and select tenses, words, phrases etc, specific to certain subjects. And I can do this without needing to complete ALL courses on one level before exploring a different level. I also like it because I hear the same phrase from different native speakers, and it makes a difference for us learners. I also like that it bounces from audio to written phrases to test the user. I am a little concerned that you found errors, but I like the videos in "Learn with Locals" best. In theory, those video clips are okay, even if they don't say the exact words written sometimes--like "chui" instead of "je suis." I find that okay because I expect it. But that's just me. I realize French-speaking natives shorten, clip, and truncate as we do in English.

For me nothing can compare to the videos done (and also podcasts done) by such great French teachers online, starting with you Dylane, and many others that can easily be discovered. I follow their videos, and of course you can then choose to buy the programs they offer (like I have done with your books!). I'm on German now, my 3rd language, and I have learned so much from my own mistakes in previous language learning, like wasting a year in Spanish and not being able to speak at all at the end of that (I was using a program similar to Babbel, which is indeed great but you can't just use that, it has to be supplemented with your own readings, videos, language partners, etc). I agree that many of these apps are very good, especially for A1 - B1/2, I'm just working through the mysteries of basic German grammar (mon dieu) with Babbel and Busuu now (and like 5 minutes of DuoLingo every day just to warm up), but ultimately there is no substitute for extended listening and interaction with others. à bientôt Beefy !

I used a combination of Memrise and Coffee Break French, and if I had it to do over again I wouldn't change a thing. The videos where you haven't already reviewed all the vocabulary were a real advantage in training myself to listen for the main idea. The speed review in Memrise helped me get past constantly hesitating, because when I was trying to go quickly instead of second-guessing myself, I found I was usually right and it was a huge boost to my confidence. I also liked being able to continue after finishing the official courses by using the community-created courses, I am currently on courses that are French only (no English), including one for advanced medical terminology. Those can be used while doing the official courses, such as one that was a French-French course on memorizing world capitals.

Because you have to talk to natives of the target language. I'm fortunate enough to have a friend from côte d'ivore who i practice my french with. Having said that, those apps are good to supplement your studies with diversity only.

One reason I really liked Busuu (at first) is one of your cons: At the A1 level there is a lot of repetition, and there is also a review after every several lessons (every 5, if I remember correctly). But after A1, the repetition and lesson reviews mainly go away. The assumption seems to be if you've seen something once, you never need to study it again. That's not how I learn. After A1, I began encountering more and more mistakes in their modules. It seems their quality control procedure is to wait for their customers to point these out. Their language exchange can be helpful and annoying. If you log in for even a split second, Busuu immediately asks you to correct the submissions of someone who is studying your native language. So each time you sit down, for instance, to study French, the app is asking you to review someone's English. Now that I'm somewhere around B1 in French, it would be nice to find an app that is rich in content (sorry, Duolingo) and would allow me to easily skip to that level. Most apps aren't designed that way. At least, none that I've tried have come close to your ever-expanding content. Another book coming.-- how do you do it?
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane Жыл бұрын
Daniel I didn't know that the repetition goes away. That's weird that they would change it like that. Bizarre Bizarre! If I find an app like that for B1 I will let you know. Most of them are targeted toward beginners. The new book is a lighter one, not like the grammar course :)

I would not expect my toaster to make juice. That’s not what it is for. My toaster is good at making toast, that’s it. It also isn’t perfect. Sometimes it over cooks something, but the majority of the time it is really good at what it does. That is Beelinguapp. It is a really useful tool to practice reading and listening. Few years back I bought a Rosetta Stone lifetime subscription for all languages. I finished italian but not was really able to speak or understand, so far away from the promised B1 level. This year I started to learn french with Rosetta Stone (my lifetime subscription) and Babbel. Rosetta Stone uses exactly the same sentences and images for all languages 😞 Babbel is fine but sometimes they progress very fast and sometimes very slow. And the grammar lessons could be more detailed and repetitive. I think the best way is to combine different resources...

J'aime Pimsleur, Frantastique, et chatterbug mais ils peuvent être chers. Bien sûr, j’aime tes livres les meilleurs

Je dois essayer chatterbug. J'espère qu'il y a un essai gratuit :D
No not at the moment because I barely have free time 😅

The best App is Elsa. It’s complete.

Honnêtement bien que je apprenne Français je n’utilise jamais une app l’apprendre parce que quand je veux pratiquer mon français, je préfère simplement parler avec les français eux-memes dans les serveurs de discord par exemple où tu peux simplement rejoindre un serveur et apprendre du début mais peut être j’obtiendrai une app à l’avenir Merci professure pour l’aider

The fact that an app is “Free” or Paid shouldn’t be a Pro or Con to determine the best app.

You have something with my opinion on free or paid app don't you?
