One interesting/unique thing about Saber and Conocer in Spanish is that when speaking Spanish and using Conocer to talk about knowing a person , you must add a "personal a" before the name of the person. This concept is actually quite simple in Spanish; however, when I'm speaking in French about knowing a person, my mind wants to add an "à" after connaitre. "Est-ce que tu connais (à) Julien?" which is obviously incorrect. Just another quirk between languages :)
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane3 жыл бұрын
Paul that's funny that you say that because where I am from we tend to say "LA / LE" before a name. Est-ce que tu as vu LA Dylane? But in "good" French, no it's better to add nothing ;)

Hi Dylane , thanks for the lovely video . Do you know why this sentence is using savoir rather than connaitre : "Est-ce que tu sais pourquoi il est absent" ?
@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane4 жыл бұрын
Simply because we always say “Savoir pourquoi” but we say “connaître la raisons”. Je ne sais pas pourquoi il est absent, peut-être que Paul connaît la raison”. does it make more sense?
@food4all3194 жыл бұрын
So in French savoir and pourquoi are paired together. Is it possible to say “ tu connais pourquoi il est absent « ?
@anwalt6932 жыл бұрын
@@TheperfectfrenchwithDylane No, it makes no sense at all, because it is neither an answer the student can benefit from nor an analysis. It may be that Francophones "always say" one thing or another, but that type of response illuminates nothing for the foreign speaker. French learners need to know WHY the Francophones aways says one thing, and not the other. There a reliable pattern to WHY Francophones use savoir sometimes and connaître other times, but you did not even mention it: SImply put, whether to use savoir or connaître depends upon what follows. If the next word will be a verb, then savoir is used, and that verb following savoir will be in the infinitive. Thus, savoir + verb will mean "to know how to," as in, "Il sait comment contester les réponses inadéquates." Savoir is also invariably used if the words that follow are question words, such as où, pourquoi, qui, avec qui, quand, quel, etc.. "Sais tu où c'est ?" "Est-ce qu'elle sait comment les francophones choisissent entre savoir et connaître ?" So, we may conclude that savoir is triggered by following verbs and following question words. Is there also something that triggers connaître? There is, of course. Connaître is used if the words that follow are nouns or a noun phrase. "Tu connais ta leçon ?" Notice that the information in the lesson may consist entirely of facts, and may be something with which the élève / étudiant has no personal experience. Despite the exclusive presence of facts and the total lack of personal knowledge, the verb used is connaître because "ta leçon" is a noun. Thus, the "rule" about whether to use connaître or savoir based upon personal experience with something versus knowing it as a fact, regularly fails. As an illustration, imagine a teacher who seeks exactly one piece of information. She poses her question, and then rephrases it: Tu connais la meilleure réponse ? Tu sais quelle est la meilleure réponse ? In her first question the teacher uses connaître because she poses the question with the verb followed by a noun. In the second question she choses savoir because that verb is followed by a question word. It is precisely for these same reasons that the answers could use connaître and savoir: "Oui, je connais la bonne réponse. Je sais pourquoi c'est comme ça." Notice that it makes no difference if her élève / étudiant learned the matter in question as a fact in school or via personal experience. Both the question and any answer will use savoir and connaître on the basis of what words follow and wholly independently of how the person came to know it.
