Being 74 years old and hunting since I was 5 years old. I was raised on farm land with orchards of Orange trees everywhere. We had chickens when I was younger and took care of them for years. Cotton tail rabbits were everywhere and I ate rabbit until I was 13 years old. Chicken were for Eggs and I had 2 dozen- Road-island Reds and New Hampshires . I have taught all my Children how to fish, hunt and trap . I use to take them camping and pretend that I couldn’t get the truck started and taught them about the safety of water, building shelters and how to cook trout on a plank of wood . How to shoot rabbits or trap them with wire and cook them. All of these skills my Children have thanked me for numerous times. I worked for the LADWP for 31 years and spent the last 18 years in the Owen’s Valley at the Control Gorge Power Plant as a Traveling Relief Operator- covering Hawie Power Plant to Upper Gorge Power Plant totaling 8 separate facilities. It was the Dream job for Myself and my children. Thank you for taking the time to read what I’ve written.

Have to disagree with some of these options. 1) 22lr... you don't "need" cci. You can buy bulk 22lr band, use it for range practice, saving your better 22lr for when needed. For instance, I have a 22lr upper for my AR and a 22lr slide swap for my glock, so I practice with bulk ammo for muscle memory and trigger practice & save my expensive ammo for the SHTF. 2) you don't need AK, AR & 308 NATO all together. In SHTF, you'll be using ONE of those. Either AR15, AR10 or AK. You don't "need" to stockpile all 3. 3) there is no 12 gauge on this list?? Huge mistake. Plenty of reasons why: can shoot slug, buck & birdshot, far greater up close defense tool, and with barrel sleeves you can actually shoot MANY calibers from a shotgun: Rifle rounds down to rimfire! For instance, I have a savage 24 o/u in 22lr/20ga and also have a SHORT LANE Shotgun Adapter kit that allows me to shoot 410/45lc, 357/38, 40s&w, 9mm, 380, 22mag. So I can shoot TEN calibers from 1 platform. While I wouldn't use that particular shotgun for my main SHTF weapon, having this setup in a WROL/SHTF situation greatly increases your ability to survive & eat. Plus any random ammo you come across or have leftover can be used. (They also do rifle inserts, I have some, this was just the "kit" example) 4) lastly, he didn't suggest a hunting round. While some of these (arguably ALL of these) "can" be used to hunt... a dedicated hunting round is a priority - and a good medium can be used for a sniper round as well as a hunting round (like 6.5 CM or the 308 he mentioned). The truth is: you need a rimfire, a pistol, a battle rifle, a shotgun, and a hunting/sniper rifle. Those are the best 5 calibers to stockpile. And will be most common, for trading too.

Generally agree if you're going it alone, but many people get prepared for a family. 22lr for taking varmint/squirrel, AK/AR build battle rifle....one per adult family member if possible, shotgun for home defense and hunting, handgun...one per adult family member for self protection, .308 for long range/hunting, If SHTF family planning, you'll need multiples and training.

Agree with your assessment of ammo choices. Most are used by many militaries around the world. So these will be constantly manufactured. I choose to add revolver ammo. Specifically .38-special and .357-magnum. Other rifle rounds to consider are the 30-30 Winchester, 30-06 Springfield, .35-Remington, .243-Winchester and the .270-Winchester. These are very popular in the civilian world for hunting. You will be able to find these rounds in abandoned rural homes. One pistol round I will be stockpiling is the .45-apc. More people than you realize shoot the .45-apc. Many using the 1911 to do so. After doing a little research. I found the most used shotgun size is the 12-gauge. There are quite a few with 20-gauge being used. The .410 will be hard to come by in an emergency situation. It's hard to find .410 size right now. The best thing about 12-gauge is that many military groups around the world use it. In constant production all around the world. Making the 12-gauge the best choice.

I have so little faith in Thunderbolt .22LR that the ones bought 11 years ago from Walmart are still 'sealed'. Ammoseek sometimes specifies listings of cheapest .22 as "bolt action only" which I can believe. People who may have used it before myself have all told me essentially the same thing ~ it's fine ammo... for practicing clearing jams and stove piping. Breaking in a GSG 1911 I bought 8 years ago required Hyper Velocity for at least the first 300 rounds which I did with CCI Stingers (1640fps) and hooked me on hyper ammo or at least nothing less than 1300fps which it has been able to cycle no problem post break-in. Same goes for my GForce Arms AR-12 semi-auto shotgun. The rule set forth by the manufacturer and other consumers claim 1300fps 12 gauge minimum and/or lock the bolt back, keeping it that way for maybe a week. I did both and continue to run Sterling Tornado Slugs through it, traveling at 1460 fps. That's a lot of ouch moving extra fast. Anything less than that (e.g, Fiocchi home defense loads) goes into my pump action.

I keep ample ammo for every weapon I have, but had experience in '60 that showed Cal & Grainage unimportant, versus shot placement. Panama had rouge Saltwater Croc, that ate Locals & 3-Canal Zone hunters that came after it. Of course, that told Dad to fly down there w/his 10 yr old Brat. Zone had put 15G Bounty on Croc, so Dad & Buddy Tom went night fishin' in Charges River, but I noticed they cleaned their 12GA pumps upon return. On last day to nail a big one, Dad's Lightning Fast Brainage, remembered to tell Tom I had perfect night vision. Tom was like, well when were ya gonna tell me! He had short .22 boat-gun I had shot dead-on several times, bummed 8 .22 LR HP from their Maid's Hubby, & I got to go along on Tom's 20ft cruiser. About 1AM, I spotted huge eye, Tom blinked his spotlight...BANG! Tom dove over side yellin' for life preservers, & in Gator/Croc infested waters in the darkness, made that carcass float! On way in, we found out gas mileage, more like gas footage, towin' that sucker in & ran outta gas. Dad & me thought screwed, but Tom raised Bud on CB, and 20 min later, Young Local came out w/20 Gallons. Gassed up, we was ready to proceed, only asking lad for price. He said, that dam Croc ate my Sister, two Cousins, and my Tia, whatever that was, so gas tonight was free!! When reached Colon at about 3AM, locals lined the riverbanks, including the Zone Conservation Ofcr, to inspect "Kill", & award tax free $15,000 voucher to Tom, the Zone Resident as required. On measure, croc was 34 ft 7 inches long X 8ft 2in wide & croc's eye hit right in the center, w/36 gr hp bullet on way thru it's brain! Dad & me figured we had some good luck, but hadn't seen nothin' yet. Flying home, on Lan Chile Airlines, took off from Panama City in 4 Eng DC-6, but landed on Miami Threshold in Single Engined Liner, as lost 3 engines over Caribbean, two of which were fireballs, requiring both extinguishers to put out. Now THAT Was Lucky!!!

Another important thing to remember besides sticking a decent amount of ammo is you need to train as well! I don’t have the space to shoot like I used to so I try to hit the range as often as I can. It’s important that you’re well familiar with your weapon/weapons and their capabilities, this goes for ammo as well. Different types and loads may have a little different recoil and points of impact. I’ve made it a point to have one side arm that I’m well skilled with as well as one close quarters fighting rifle (my AR) and one long range rifle (my Rem 700). It all comes down to mag reloading quickly, bolt manipulation without hang ups, and being able to still hit your target after you’ve shot and shot and shot and fatigue is setting in. These are all things to keep in mind if you’re serious about fighting should the need arise, which I hope it never does.

Never stop learning. Gain skills. It is what separates us from the animals. Many animals can hoard for the future. Do more than that. How about starting a garden before WWIII, or raising small food animals or tending a grape vine or making wine or learning to sew cloth or stitch leather. Guns are good, but there are a lot of other skills to learn. Heck, about half of Americans can barely cook, and even less can bake bread. Oh, and while stocking up on ammo, stock up on lubricants, springs, pins, and other small parts that your heirs will need to fire those guns and use up all that ammo you have stockpiled. Wife and I, on a half acre we have 1,700 square feet of garden plus 20 berry bushes, 14 fruit trees, a grape vine and a nut tree. We both can cook and bake from scratch, we can, dehydrate, freeze, ferment, make jams, and cold store our produce and some meat. Other skills in the house include reloading brass and shotshells, first aid, bicycle maintenance, drywall install, repair and texture, interior and exterior painting, some carpentry, some electrical, some plumbing, some leather working, sewing, first aid (one of us was an EMT), project planning, technical writing, engineering spreadsheets, fishing, filleting fish, felling trees, meat cutting, small animal butchering, small engine carburetor rebuilding and other mechanical. We've stockpiled raw materials and have tools. It has saved us a lot of money in addition to being ready for lots of things. Other skills include playing mandolin, harmonica, hammer dulcimer and lapidary arts. We have primitive camped in the dead of winter, through a tropical storm, and most other weather. Another thing to do is exercise. Besides the chores around the house and garden I've been walking the dog while carrying a 20-27 pound pack for the past 50 months. We recently passed 3,700 miles since we started. Last year we only missed 3 days, and got over 1,100 miles. This year we will probably walk 950 miles and take 9 days off. Besides former EMT, we also have done the following, chef, restaurant and bakery manager, chemical process engineer, quality engineer, auditor, dialysis technician, truck driver, hospice caregiver, wastewater technician foreman, lab technician, CNC mill operator, school teacher, Girl Scout leader and officer in the South Carolina State Militia.

You need to stock up on JHP defensive ammunition. Yes, it’s more expensive but there’s a reason for that. Don’t stock up on stuff just because it’s cheap. Yes, FMJ is better than nothing but it doesn’t hold a candle to today’s hollow point ammo. We want to conserve ammo in a SHTF scenario. We want each round to count. Quality over quantity. With hollow points you’re doing significantly more damage with each round. I’d much rather take a bad guy down with 2 to the chest than having to let off 8 or 9 FMJs going through and through not doing much damage and not causing hardly any bleeding leaving bad guy to be able to fight back for much much longer. JHP dumps its energy immediately into its target and makes a very large wound channel on the inside. More damage means more bleeding and more bleeding means your target is neutralized. So yes, you can buy and afford more FMJ…but you’re going to use more of it because it’s not as good. Plain and simple. I’m not saying don’t stock up on FMJ. You need range ammo because you need to train. Yes, even in a SHTF situation we still need to be training. It can also be used to dispatch unwanted critters so you don’t waste your defensive ammo. Really, at the end of the day…if you run out of defensive ammo..it’s better than nothing. That’s something we can all agree on.

They are the three most popular rounds because that’s what a lot of people shoot but as far as these other rounds that you’re talking about most people don’t even own those guns. Some of the most popular Amos to stockpile are going to be, 9 mm how long with 12 gauge or 20 gauge shotgun shells 22 long rifle and or magnums depending on your 22 rifle I personally shoot a magnum and I do agree with the CCI‘s because that’s what I shoot in my magnum .. add 308 is OK I personally go with 65 Creedmoor, as those rounds are between a dollar in about 25 around depending on where you buy them.. I also stock some 38 special and some 357 for my cowboy action guns, and it wouldn’t hurt to have a case or two of 12 gauge slugs on hand, preferably sabot, slugs by Hornady those are the realistic calibers people can stock and afford, and would use in a survival situation from the standpoint of hunting and surviving and I would put my 65 Creedmoor AR up against your 556 AR any day of the week along with those other calibers you have mentioned anyway that’s my opinion.. about that Really all people need is 9 mm .. 22s.. and shotgun shells

Realistically, your kit should consist of a 9mm Glock pistol and an AR15 chambered in 5.56. If you have those two weapons and train with them you’ve opened the door to nearly unlimited supply and support. That’s because everyone carries it. Carry what your group has. Don’t be the one guy with .300 blk or fuckin 5.7. If everyone has the same caliber and types of weapons we can provide support to one another in the event one of our guys runs out of ammo, needs a mag, needs a rail or extractor or even something as simple as a rear sight. Why do you think we have NATO rounds? Same concept. I’m not saying not to own or buy other weapons. Please, by all means buy as many as you can! This is specifically speaking towards your fighting load out. Same mags, same ammo, same everything. It only makes sense.

Glock is a great great company that makes a damn near perfect fighting pistol. Don’t do shit to it. Buy a Glock 17, 19 or 45 and put a dot on it and a light and leave the damn thing alone. It is the most reliable in stock configuration and that’s what you want with a pistol you’re going to take to war. Idc that Glock hurts your feelings. Quit being a bitch and buy one even if it’s just for SHTF.

Is it smart to stock like ball ammo or should I buy more self defense ammo like hollow points?
@Seedavis3972 ай бұрын
80% ball 20% self defense. If shit hits the fan you can barter with your less pricey ball ammo. Practice with ball. Keep loaded mags with self defense. All guns sighted in and ready to go

Tulammo and Golden Tiger are RUSSIAN. And PPU is Serbian, like almost 50% Russian ally. Nobody buys Russian ammo, if doesn't want to support Russia's war against Ukrainians. (Funny to call Russian ammo reliable, btw. They are the lowest quality bulk ammo and definitely have storage life probs for hoarders). So: - Either buy usual American brands, Federal, American Eagle, ... - Or if want to go cheaper, European: STV Group, Sellier&Bellot or Geco. Or Turkish ammo. - Or go to premium brands: Lapua, Sako, Norma. But even to start with, why would someone in the US have 7.62x39 as SHTF weapon? Definitely .223/.308/.338LM or such NATO calibers instead.

I’m sorry but all this about SHTF scenarios is garage unless you’ll reduce it down to what you need to successfully survive! Breakbarrel pellet gun that shoots rounds that cost less than a penny? Black powder rifles and revolvers that you can make your own lead balls and powder… Yeah to survive the first six months you want as much firepower as possible but after that?

@jonahstokely93762 ай бұрын
Well I stopped watching when you said a heavier bullet means more penetration when talking about the 9mm. With any bullet, a heavier bullet doesn’t mean better penetration. Heavier bullet means more energy dump. For more penetration you want speed being the main part and you normally see this out of lighter bullets in factory loads that is. You also have the fact of what the bullet is made out of to gain better penetration but the main I is speed. Lighter is faster, faster = more penetration. Heavier is slower, bigger bullet or higher grain = more mass = more energy dump into target
