Wow, I've started doing that in the last 2 weeks, but only in my mind when I'm walking the dog. I would take each key and play 3 simple melodies but I'd just do them chromatically or else I'd forget which key that I just finished. If I make a mistake I'd play it again, and I'd also think about the scale degree to help ensure that I was getting it right, since I only have my mind's ear to hear it. The next simple melody that I'll add is Ode to Joy. But first I check it on the piano after working it out in my mind to make sure that I don't make a simple mistake and practise that in my mind. This way I can also utilize other time during the day that might be wasted. If I get confused, I use intervals to determine the correct note. But I'm not worried about the sounds in my mind being the actual key, since I don't have a reference, and on the piano I can instantly adjust to the actual pitch of the key. You're video is amazing to me, since I was doing something very similar that I just dreamed up for myself. I was told that it's better to work out phrases in your mind and be pretty sure of them before you check on the piano, so I'll work out what you just did and then check it on the piano and that will be tomorrow's dog walk. OK, that took me about 2 minutes to be really sure of what you are playing and I wasn't looking at your fingers. Now I'll double check on the piano, and note the scale degrees. I LOVE this idea.

Wow, Gary! You are doing a great thing for yourself. Practicing in your mind, away from the keyboard isn't easy and it takes great discipline, but the payoff is huge! Keep going!

Great idea to take a snippet from a piece you are working on, and building excercises from that. And learning music theory at the same time. I don't mind practicing scales as we do in speed/agility in PS. Because it serves a purpose beyond simply practicing scales. And it is the same idea I see in this video. The building of excersices serves a purpose beyond the excercises per se 👌👌👍👍

Yes! Thank you! I built in scale practice into Become A Piano Superhero because I know how important scales are! You just need to practice them in a way that gives you a better payoff. 😊

To your question about creating a course on scales and arpeggios: Yes, that would be very helpful. For most people like me, and I suspect many of your viewers, the only education we get on scales and arpeggios is from a book or online source - so we sit down and practice them, get bored very quickly, and reach a point where we can't make any more progress. I know that I'm doing them wrong, but I don't know any other way, so all I can tolerate is occasionally practicing them just to make sure I still know them.
@ThePianoKeys3 жыл бұрын
Yup, that's the problem. Great intention to learn scales! But it leads to frustration and stalling if you don't do it in a way that's productive.

Thanks very much for this. Ironically, as someone who has played guitar by ear and tab (even though I can read Western notation to an extent), and as someone who looks for patterns, I am trying to learn to play from musical notation and am finding that much slower than learning a piece by ear or from a video. REQUEST - I find the volume on your videos to be very quiet, which means that I have to be careful in boosting the volume because when commercials come on they are very loud unless I can quickly turn the volume down. I do not find this on others' videos, but maybe, for some reason, my experience is unique. If not, would you please increase the gain on your audio interface?
@ThePianoKeys3 жыл бұрын
So sorry about the audio! I just uploaded a new version with louder audio, so if you'd like to rewatch, please take a look at that one. The reason you're finding it slower to learn from notation is probably just because you have less experience with it. Keep at it, you will definitely improve!

Thanks Marina! I wouldn't mind a course on scales. I feel that if I could do all scales well I would be able to increase my speed and accuracy on runs which are for the most part scales. I've tried learning them in the past but get impatient and end up just playing whatever as usual. Hope you and Elvis are well! You audio is still low...the commercials blast me because I have the sound turned way up.😅 Thanks again for super practical info!

If you have it really well, I would move it to weekly and then eventually monthly. You want to move it to your long term memory and then you only play it when you're in the mood. Just my take knowing how to memorize things.

How can practicing scales up and down the keyboard might be a waste of time? How else do you practice scales how about just looking at the keys and hope for the best? Or how about let's just pretend... Practising scales is never a waste of time, definitely unsubscribing.
@ThePianoKeys3 жыл бұрын
You clearly feel very strongly about this. I would invite you to be open to learning ways you may not be familiar with yet. Playing scales up and down in and of itself isn't a waste of time - it's just that the way most people do it isn't productive. Since you're unsubscribing, you'll probably miss the video in which I explain WHY it might be a waste of time and how to better optimize your scale practice.
