OCS is one of the best game systems ever made (along with BCS and ASL). The crazy thing about it, is that the rule book looks like a 56 page wall-of-dense-text, but, after getting a few turns in, it plays sooooo smoothly! Much smoother than many so called simpler games. I guess that's a testament to its overall design. I'm actually playing the full Smolensk Campaign right now and having a blast :)

agreed. It is a system that you use the parts as you need it. I end up reading up rules only when I need a certain rule

This is like when Jessica Fletcher from Murder She Wrote and Thomas Magnum had that crossover episode and solved a case. My 2 favorite Channels combining forces... Great Stuff.

It’s absolutely fabulous to see Ardwulf/ Gary on your channel. It’s particularly interesting to hear the discourse & debate. Gary’s enthusiasm & historical detail & subtle perspective of OSC in action is great. A truly great watch. Fascinating. Big thanks.

Correction: Smolensk was designed by Hans Kishel; John Kisner was the developer.

OCS is a fantastic system. Smolensk is a serious logistical challenge for the German player. Managing your supply lines is a full time task. The Russians have a much easier task, fall back, garrison the transport hubs and VC cities with enough supply to hold out for a good number of turns. I played against a very experienced player and as the Germans I was well and truly beaten. Just when you start to make headway you lose nearly all your panzer divisions as they are withdrawn. If you aren’t in the VC locations at that point, it’s all over. To become a proficient OCS player is a task that will take many years. One of my favourite systems. I can also recommend the latest North Africa game in the SCS series. Very much an OCS lite treatment of the campaign.

What a great video. This is the first time that I got more than a glimpse of OCS, and now I do not feel so intimidated by it. The stacking freaks me out though :)

I spent so much time trying to grok OCS. Never could internalize any of it. Hoping this will rekindle my interest. I wish I had someone to teach!

I enjoy OCS very much, however, a few OCS drawbacks should be noted when teaching the system. Commanders didn't decide between fuel or ammo (that was never a thing), and it has warped the game somewhat. Commanders would often simply get less of what they needed. OCS tends to play such that when shortages occur, players get to convert supply points into either fuel, ammo, or general supply. This then, 99.9% of the time, has players opting for all fuel, and while I too enjoy game choices, this, "artificial conversion," often has players dragging round huge swaths of unused artillery units as dead weight, for almost always choosing fuel over ammo, essentially, in essence, eliminating the support force from the game.
