I have read her book and it is truly transformative. She's such a delightful nut. Whereas her method is about what to _keep,_ the key question being: "Does this give me joy?", other books and "gurus" are all about nifty storage systems and idiot ideas like "Every time you bring a new piece of clothing into your closet you have to throw one away." Oh how wise...

In her book, does it talk about getting motivated to cleaning/tidying? I love cleaning and being organized, but it takes me forever to get myself to that mindset of lets do it. I sit on it for a while before I do anything. Sometimes I sit on it all day and end up deciding tomorrow lol.

@@lifewithstaph so do I.. what I do is to break the task into smaller sections. Let's say for a drawer with three racks, I commit to tidying up just the top rack first. After that, if I still have the _willpower_ I'll continue with the 2nd rack, but if not, I set up a reminder on my phone to do it later.. I also made a to-do list (GTD) of all the clutters that need to be purged when I have the time, just to keep things on track and out of my head..

For voiced over's lifeless energy, I think most English natives underestimate the power of sub-titles. We non-English speaking are so familiar with subtitles because we can feel real emotion from the original language. We find voice over can't convey the real meaning and real emotions. We don't mind reading CC. But all English-speaking programs always use the dubbed voice over which is too bad because it kills all authenticity and genuine.

It's so common for clutter clearing helps losing weight. Clutter in your life is a symptom of clutter in your mind and inner self. When you put all effort to declutter and get rid of the mess it's a form of getting rid of your spiritual clutter too. When your mind and soul are clear you will shed the weight as a process of better life, better mind and better soul.

The point behind Marie's method and what everyone should be able to take away even if they're not familiar with Japanese culture and language, is that you only need to keep things that actually matter to you and improve your life. And having only the things that improve your life around you makes you happier. That's why even mundane objects "spark joy." You "get to know" every belonging you have so you can actually decide whether it' worth keeping, and get rid of everything else. The other side effect is that if you only have objects around you that you know about and have decided that you care about, you're more likely to be put them back where they belong. This is a concept rooted in psychology and can also be useful for people undergoing many different psychological therapies, especially for depression which makes it very difficult to keep your personal space organized. And it's also related to the key points of minimalism. But yeah, also keep in mind that Japanese culture can be very different than American culture so a lot of the elements of how she approaches this topic may seem unusual to American audiences.
@marieskee226 жыл бұрын
However, I don't get how this concept applies to organizing your desk. Most items on my work desk don't "spark joy". More like drive home anxiety, lol. I can't just throw them away!

Even my account book is colorful so I can sit down and record my expenses daily with joy. YOU NEED TO DO THAT!

Great synopsis. I think I've been forced into this thinking by virtue of the fact we are a family of 5 in a tiny two bedroom condo. 😂 Everything has to be minimal and have a clearly defined purpose and space. We teach the kids to get rid of their stuff that no longer produces creativity, education or fun. We give it to Goodwill, other charities or ask a friend if they want it. They delight in giving that item "new life" with someone else. I think it makes them ok with the idea of change and growth in themselves too. I have one weak spot though... Craft materials. Dang. They all have so many possibilities, it's hard for me to get rid of any. I have also given away many things that we ended up needing...
@beverlyanne56995 жыл бұрын
Very well said. It is important that in Western "civilized" culture that we understand the differences between weighing down and complementing productive energy. Everything affects us compoundingly from the colour on our walls, struggling to "find everyday things", eating away time and your attention that can be better spent actually living and doing things you love and with whom you love. I found that growing my mom plants that I actually hate was my clutter, I felt bad for composting a living plant that no one wanted, but that was it. I am not allowing my flow to be impeded. I truly do not understand how or why people allow their lives to be so much more stressful when simple everyday habits can alleviate that clutter in the first place. Mental check lists are a habit I got in to years ago. Just some people do not have these life skills and understand that yes, it all is connected to the emotional and intellectual wiring. You are one complete person, heal the whole issue, not bandaid it with a fad or catch phrase as you mentioned.

+Candace Murray I know!! I am treating my things with more respect (even though I wasn't horrible to them before)... After learning Marie Kondo's perspective, I put things back in their 'homes' when finished with them, and I even couldn't bare to leave dirty clothes wadded up on the floor of the bathroom today. I unwadded them neatly and placed them in the laundry basket. At work, I can't just leave my pens and pencils all over, but rather, I feel sad for them if I don't put them back into the mug on my desk, where they 'live'.

Most people on this planet (well, all people except monks from different religions and a minority of the rest) see their stuff as an "extended self"... and this is why we can slip into an extreme hoarding behavior at any moment. I agree that I pass my excess possessions on in the hope that someone else who will find them more useful next. Rather than telling you to discard your shit she takes her time to let you see where her own failures can help you. Lol both the dubbing and the interviewer sound like nothing sparks joy in their lives. I don't know if it's a britishism but it made this difficult to watch

They always do the the thanking half-assed. Its a mindfulness exercise you need to really focus on the things you're letting go and why you're letting them go so you wont accumulate the same clutter, make the same mistakes in life and not feel regret later that you might have thrown away something you shouldnt. And the more you do it, the faster and easier and more reflexively you do it when you buy or throw away. This life exercise ultimately leads to you *not* texting your ex at 2am.
