First Aid is not using tape and a bandana to treat yourself or others. It is a last ditch effort and should only be used if it truly is an emergency. The threat of infection is high. Its best to have training and a solid first aid kit to treat wounds in the field.

Your ten essentials list is a good reference but I don't see where it is better. The 10 C's are a list as a good reference point with each category having more than one use and multiple items with in the list. For example the fire kit you list is the same. Your shelter, cord, and stakes fall under Cover, and Cordage. Clothing falls under Cover. Cargo tape is repair and also goes into first aid. Your sun protection and first aid is the same thing so it should be together. Canvas needle is for repair, first aid, compass, etc... Food is not listed in the 10 C's but its a given that you should carry some food to hold you over till you can resupply by either getting to your destination, buying or trapping, fishing, hunting, etc... Again both lists yours and Dave's are great reference points to build off. Doing more with less is the best, being able to do multiple task with each item is better, having a good first aid kit for what you are doing and are capable of handling is what you should carry. Water purification is a must anywhere you are U.S. or other countries.

I posted before that customization of your kit for the area you operate in is key. In our Philippine tropical environment, we have plenty of water but treatment is a must. The fire kit I used back in the States is just as important here to pasteurize water and keep you warm on a chilly mountaintop. We always are prepared to protect ourselves from skeeters. We have several varieties that carry bad things such as malaria and dengue fever. Easily avoided if you have lightweight bug nets and perhaps repellent. We also go overboard on the med kits. Beautiful Bride is a nurse and we believe that her skills would be wasted if she did not have the gear needed.

Sun protection is a consideration here in Ohio, wooded or not. It isn’t just shading yourself, it's UV protection as well. Pack a little bit of sunscreen. Even if youre covered up, sunburn sucks on the lips and back of the hands Agree re: basic first aid kit. You dont have to go overboard. Yes infection isnt going to kill you right away but why not minimize the contamination if you can.

A little input on the rhino rescue tourniquets....if you have larger thighs they may not fit you, I am 6'2" 225lbs and my legs aren't huge but if they were much bigger they might not work. Basically as usual if you get them make 100% sure they fit you and practice with them, those tiny rubber "tourniquets" in cheap first aid kits WILL NOT STOP BLOOD FLOW. Those are for drawing blood not stopping it, and don't rely on a piece of paracord either because that will be put on your headstone. Great video 👍 thanks for showing.

Rather than bringing extra batteries for my headlamp, I check the batteries with a multimeter before I go out for a day hike, then put them back in the headlamp with a piece of thin card between them and the terminal to prevent accidentally turning on in the pack. If they're less than 1.35V when tested, I replace them and keep the slightly used ones for a clock or TV remote. When this headlamp dies, I'll replace it with a rechargeable one. I'm bringing a powerbank for my phone already.

I don't see to many yt creators talking about "extra Clothing" . It's a must to have a full change in a dry bag and random temp changes .

If you can find them. Though they're a little heavier, the old green rubberized military issue ponchos are more durable than the camouflage and due to them being thicker, they hold the heat better in the colder months. And a good poncho liner. One thing that seems to be missing is (good) foot powder. You'd be amazed how much of a difference it makes when changing your socks.

good information. and a good kit. the 10 essentials are imo a necessity for hiking, camping and survival. i also think the same about the 10c's. i like to combine both. both list different categories of gear. such as cutting tools. that can be a knife, multi tool, pocket knife, saw, ax, machete and so on. i always carry a fixed blade knife, folding saw, pocket knife and a hatchet. cover or shelter, starts with whatever you're wearing, and something to sleep under, something to sleep on, and something to sleep in. i like a stainless steel bottle or canteen and a ss cup. so i can boil water or cook in both. i do watch your videos. because you have good common sense ideas. looking forward to more.

👍👍👍 .. a good post. The '10 C's / Essentials / Whatever' .. much of a muchness and very much Situational Dependent. I live adjacent to a forest which I know pretty well .. including well-defined boundaries to the NSEW of it. Getting lost therejn is not an issue, so Map / Compass / GPS are not mandatory take-alongs when therein. Although .. I have always, a little Button Compass that hangs off my pack / pouch / satchel / whatever. It's accuracy has been / is checked regularly. I like to 'practice' orienteering whilst out and about. One does not go out 'looking for an emergency' to fall into. Pre-planning, including for the unforseen, within the Environment at the time should take care of that. 'Kit' is very much dependent on the Activity planned / possibly unforseen. My take-alongs vary according to walking the pooch in 'her forest' 😏, going to the City for the day, a trip to somewhere outlying, etc, etc. A consideration .. the dilemma is often more a case of not 'what to take with' but rather 'what to leave out'. Trying to 'micro plan' for every possible eventuality could result in not going anywhere. 50 kg of ultra-lightweight high-tech 'essential' gear still weighs 50 kg. Common Sense and learning from the experiences and expertise of others should be worthy considerations. Thanks for sharing .. take care .l

Wendell, a great video and a companion to your previous work on the ten C’s. I was very excited to hear your thoughts on the subject. My background is similar to yours due to my training in emergency medical care. The remote aspect of being alone even for a day hike, necessitates being able to provide assistance to an injured person. The time spent on waiting for help to arrive can be detrimental for an injured person’s chances of recovery. Nice work!

I seen all the comments from your ten C's video and didn't comment seen all these comments and decided to just say I see both you and Dave are reaching the same destination but use different paths. I hear a lot of his teachings in both these videos. I've also hear a lot of your thinking in his. Both of you do great work please keep it up. Dave also did a video 5 or 6 years ago where he talks about 10 C's and 10 essential you should check it out.

I don't think it's fair of you to say one system is better than the other. Both have their advantages. The 10 C's is NOT a "1 item" list of 10 items, it is a list of 10 categories of tools that are beneficial to survival and most difficult to reproduce in the wild, that's it. The 10 essentials is a list of gear that was directed toward hikers and climbers. People should know both systems and take what they want from them. Most of the 10 essentials are part of the 10 C's. I carry Items from the 10 Cs with other things from the 10 essentials. That kit has served me well for a long time. Learn both and use them together.

@@ThePreparedWandereryou are correct the term 10 essentials was out before Dave Canterbury said 10 C's, and Dave has stated that, the 10 C's are his way of listing the categories in a easy to remember format... And yes he continues to say that he uses the teaching of Morse and others, he has stated that it is nothing new... As for your medical, he has again stated that the medical kit is bare minimum and can be supplemented. So with all do respect you are not showing anything new yourself, you are using the 10 C's or the 10 essentials yourself they are kits and base lines not a one and done thing. It does not matter what you carry with you if you do not have the knowledge and experience to use the gear.
