A couple of older surplus packs I'd modded I'd put a removable back pad in for a different reason, so you can clean them after a lot of use but I hadn't thought of doing that with the shoulder strap padding. Have an Austrian Alice looking pack this would work a treat on and it would actually be easier to do than attaching the padding permanently to the existing shoulder straps. Giving out top tips and you didn't even know it!!!!!

I attached 2 Helikon E&E pouches to the outside of my ILBE's pass through sections and this leaves room to slide my Sven down one side and my tent poles down the pass through on the other side. And I really miss the molle on the outside of the belt. Bill Doyle in Upr Grnwd Lk, NJ

Ilbe all the way. It’s perfect for a robust hiking long distance ruck that has an amazing durable suspension system. I prefer the ilbe because it also doesn’t have all the zippers to get into the main pack. The zippers on the chieftain ruck are in semi high pressure arias. Which will result in them wearing faster. I like the ilbe’s quick access zippers because they are not high pressure points that could make or break the functionality. Yet you can access most of the packs interior. Also the main basic military issue benefit is that it has the option of having an assault pack properly strapped to it. Also it has a dry bag made for it so you can go over water without ruining your contents. The chieftain has none of those extra features because even if it is an issued pack by a private contractor it’s not up to the complete versatility of standard equipment of the usgi/usmc gear. Also. I believe the ilbe is not 1000D it is 750 cordura nylon. I do not lick the ilbe pockets that are where the traditional water bottle pockets are. They are great for carrying medical supplies and or rain gear or even a 2 quart canteen. It prefer medical gear and rain wear in those pockets. I do like the chieftains unbreakable yet comfortable suspension system. Yet the ilbe is bomb proof and extra hikers grade comfortable. The ilbe I think is just the better over all back short of body armor obviously. I use the ilbe ruck for my get home bag in the winter. I commute, and all I carry is a dry bag of medical equipment. A military woodland mass sleep system, a small junk drawer Dyneema pouch with all my small essentials. Two stainless steel canteens, and 8 mre’s with a cook pot. It’s a simple design and it’s easy as hell.

I was issued and used the ILBE as an infantryman. The CHIEF has internal compression straps that remove any stress the zippers would otherwise face. The CHIEF is hands down a better ruck. More modular, more durable, more comfortable. The ILBE is a great ruck for what it is. The CHIEF is just a more modern offering.

Thank you for this video. The CPP is an awesome pack but VERY expensive. there are also the ones from Eberlestock and Mistery Ranch that are very good. The problem with the CPP is that it's BIG...90L That's a lot more than many would need (non-military use). I'd like to find a similar one but in the 40-45L range.
