New York Times had reported that minorities were dying of Covid-19 at alarming rates. It is due to a lack of universal health care systems in the US. Some of them are poor Afro-Americans and others were mostly Spanish speaking migrants from South America who are exploited by US farmers and other unscrupulous employers. These people generally avoid going to doctors or to hospitals because they simply couldn't afford a doctor. Some of them were feared being deported back to their home countries after many years of living in the USA incognito. In developing countries like in India where I was born and brought up or Sri Lanka, people could go to the government hospitals and get at least the basic medical treatment without having to worry too much about the cost.

Only 12% of those who are put on the ventilator survive. And that's why the logic is that ventilator is not an option. But could it be so, and I don't have data here I'm just doing some guesswork, that because of the lack of ventilators we only put patients who are severely critical on ventilator. if we acquire more ventilators, we could be the position to put patients on ventilators early on in their stage and that could be life-saving and would change that percentage?

As a doctor I m very happy to see a journalist talking so much sense. I would also like you to study a hospital in Bhopal, ‘Chirayu’ which is currently treating 300 cases with 100%recovery rate and 0 mortality. It is a hospital that had more than 50 severe cases and had in its icu about 50 ventilators but none were used. If out of 300 cases not even a single ventilator was used than probably there is hope for a poor country like India with less access to ventilators(MP has 993 ventilators overall). Please do an episode if India has enough ventilators and could this result seen in a hospital of Bhopal be of any value to the whole country.

Excellent 👌 . Thank you for hard work for us. We are in catch 22 .need herd immunity but how to get it ? For herd immunity lest 50% of population need to get infected. No country can afford to handle million of patients . So all of us should take care a lot .

As a doctor, i think, the data about ventilators and deaths should be interpreted really with caution. It seems to be more of an association than a causation. As we know that the lungs of the patients who are put on venti are already seriously compromised. Data appears to be a reflection of this. But again, further research is required. As a few studies have shown that the patient should be kept on high fio2 and less PEEP.

@dreamcatcheradventure4 жыл бұрын
@@avidreader100 The keyword here is "biome", not the gut. How it is linked is a complex science that takes enormous amount of explaination where biology & chemistry comes together. In simple words, biome is the flora/fauna (bacteria, microbes) that exist in any stomach. This microbial life system governs our digestive process, conversion of food to energy, and triggering signals to body parts (via hormones) to do the needful for survival (antibodies against alien viruses) which is our body is 100% capable, UNLESS, the biome is compromised. Well, that took me more than a decade of reading science paper and chasing knowledge to understand it (still ongoing, coz science is darn complex). But here you go...a 1 min jist of it for you 🙏

4 жыл бұрын
The first thing I noticed on arriving at New York airport many years ago was the large proportion very obese Americans. Diet of beef and ham-burgers, hot-dogs, pizza, coca-cola and ice cream leads to obesity and related diseases, i.e. hypertension and diabetes. Lesson learnt from my Hindu ancesters: simple low calorie vegetarian diet is good for warding off diseases. In order to supply beef in huge quantities for the American diet, forests have cleared over decades to graze animals, leading to environment crises and climate change. Karma plays out in the end. I hope the Americans and the Chineses will change their eating habits and let animals live their normal natural lives.

I have to say this about Ventilators. The high fatality rate in case of intubation may be partly because of the fact that it is only as a last desperate step that a person is put on the ventilator. The patient stands little chance of survival, intubation or not! Considering the fact that the availability of ventilators in India per lakh is pathetically low, the present move to acquire more of the machine is a blessing in the long run, even after the Corona threat vanishes. The Government should distribute them to rural and semi-urban hospitals with no intubation equipment.

@@believerforever7154 Yes there lot to be done in these issues but we all Indian have tendency to ignore traffic rules, many drivers are illiterate they just ignore freeway lanes. Mumbai Locals always see accidents but most of the times people directly cross railway tracks. We need to change ourselves.
