Chandrababu thought having one kid would help reduce India's population. By looking at the dominance of North Indians due to their high population forced him to change his mind. We South Indians will be losing our seats in Parliament because of our responsible behavior and giving those seats to the North Indians who were involved in uncontrolled breeding in the past 50 years. On top of that we are getting only around 25p/Rupee, we contribute to the country while the North Indians get around 300%. On top of that, Hindi is promoted as a National language while our languages don't get any priority. Above all, we have been accused of traitors just because we don't want Hindi imposition.

Usually developed countries have a problem with declining populations is because their entire working age population is fully employed but has to support a much larger aged population. But India (incl TN, AP etc) has a different conundrum. The TFR may be falling within a lagged concomitant fall in population. But this should not pose a problem because a large number of our youth are either underemployed or unemployed. We are having a serious issue now with jobless growth. Our youth have to be harnessed better to increase employability, productivity etc to support a decline in population. This means starting the work now of improving education, skills, health etc. These youth with better skills can then be absorbed into the workforce, their productivity improved etc to handle the burden that comes with a lower TFR. But no. Our politicians will never do such things that are right for the country. Instead a narrative is being set that the demographic dividend will die out. That’s rubbish. We never reaped the benefits of a growing population because our youth have low education, low skills and low productivity.

Declining population is great for younger people. Less number of people in the working age means that less labor is available and so their value ( salaries) will go up. Between over and underpopulation the latter is vastly better both for living standards as well as the planet in general ..

The concerns of South Indian States are valid - all of em greying sooner than other states. Delimitation will be a massive blow on these prospects states. Rather than boosting population at the South, there must be control measures at the other side to drive a balance. Otherwise the North-South divide is gonna further deepen and resentment is gonna further grow between fellow Indians. Policy measures can be effectively implemented only by the joint efforts of Union and State govts. I hope both these stakeholders will see wisdom in this.

I've written it elsewhere, I'm gonna write it here also. We're unnecessarily targetting the wrong goalpost. Loksabha is what it is, house of the people, it's bound to have proportional representation of people living in this country, wherever they are. That shouldn't be the concern at all. The target should & must be rajyasabha, how it's seats are distributed & are going to be distributed in future. The makers of the constitution definitely didn't want the states to be equal like that of the US. But that doesn't mean they wanted proportional representation in the rajyasabha also, otherwise it's just Loksabha 2.0, making it useless. We should be talking about in what better ways we can redistribute the rajyasabha seats, HDI vs National HDI or per-capita income vs National per capita income or Tax vs National Tax etc. are notable ways to do that. Otherwise it's just people of one state dehumanising others which is very very dangerous for National Unity!

Fun fact: Aadhar card coverage in India is around 95.5% (as of March 2024). Total Aadhar Card issued since 2010 is 139 Crore. Hence Maximum Possible population of India (considering no Aadhar card receiver has died in last 14 years) is at 145.5 Crore. Now UN estimates for India's population as of 2024 stand at 144 Crore. Considering that every year approximately 1 crore Indians have died (and that atleast 50% had Aadhar card) India's population will be much lower than UN's population estimates 😊

Stalin did not say have more children. The proverb he quoted was 'bear 16 and live a grand life'. Malthus says that each child is not born only with a mouth but also with two hands. That means each baby born has the wherewithal to produce. For that, the government needs to provide for proper education, which needs money, and gainful employment, which needs more investment. So it's all about the fiscal policy of the government to manage the population, not to control it on one hand. On the other hand , parental responsibilities are daunting in the present socio-economic scenario to bring up the children with moral values and to fund their education. Technological advancement is also there, which instils fear of loss of jobs. Focus must be on bringing up a morally and physically health generation.

What's wrong with a declining population? Maybe a steady state population that is low is not the worst case scenario especially given the high rate of unemployment and underemployment in the country. With increasing automation, it's probably even more reason to have a lower population. Political vote banks seem to be the only real incentive for local regions to increase their population rates.

Stalin's comment about having 16 is not in the literal sense of producing 16 children. In Tamil there is a saying "let you have all the 16 and lead a prosperous life." Sixteen doesn't mean 16 children. As long as two child policy is strictly followed, the population remain constant. At present most of educated and well placed couples in South, especially in Andhrapradesh are following one child policy. Others also limiting their kids to two. Muslims also following family planning. Result is reduction of population. There is no problem as long as population remains constant. But reduction may pose many problems in future.

In Kerla, or TN or Maharashtra, Within the State, changes in a number of MLA seats are revised based on population changes. So in 50 years, the fastest breeding district in Kerala has gained the number of MLA seats, and the sensible district has lost seats. There is no cribbing about this happening. In last 50 years, Mumbai has been getting more and more seats and other districts have been losing seats. In every state, in 50 years, districts with high fertility have got more MLA seats and responsible districts have lost MLA seats. But states have problems with applying that very logic to MP seats. Unfortunately unlike in the oldest surviving democracy of the world, India instead of fixing the parliament seats to states, want to use population to determine seats in parliament in the so called mp seat delimitation process which is tantamount to existence of ethnicities that controlled their populations on GOI recommendations. When population, law and order etc are things that are more influenced by state govts performance, it is only logical to keep the seat count fixed to the existing number and adjust the constituency boundaries with in the state based on the new population. The tactic that Indian govt trying to play using parliament seat delimitation is suicidal to all the non-aryan ethnic/linguistic groups of India which will further erode the minimum say they have currently at center. Also, when we are not increasing the number of prime ministers based on population, what is the need to increase the number of parliament seats except cost to govt?
