Confusions created to milk the businesses. GST was supposed to be simpler but it’s as much complicated if not more than earlier tax systems.

The babus and netas in India keep everything vague and complicated and open to multiple interpratations because a) that is how their mindset is since the days of the license babu raj b) it vests in them the power to harass and monetarily benifit using the labyrinth that they have constructed. GST has become the new tool of the government to harass businesses and we wonder why jobs arent getting created !

This confused taxation of food products arises from the tendency to go fishing in the piss - trying to catch every rupee of tax based on real or perceived difference. Such attitude comes down as a legacy from central excise and sales tax laws. Besides, GST is a law driven by the bureaucracy, not by the politicians. The provisions of gst laws confer enormous powers on the GST officers. GST is a case of tail wagging the dog. Needless to say that corruption is rampant in the GST department.

This GST council is doing a very good job. They have really dug deep. I hope they dig deeper. What is also needed is for laws to be made as a feedback from these gst rules. Example if you open a yogurt parlor in your restaurant then the gst rules go for a toss. So it could be a separate entity. Many other countries do the same, laws are made so that the tax rules are simpler to follow. The only reason why tax is difficult is because we have an open market and people are allowed to experiment with structure, product and service(which should not be discouraged). There should be laws set by which when business owners start a venture they are guided by these laws so as to not make the tax rules complex.

FM's arrogance & not to accept flaws in the system has beaten BJP very badly this time. Hopefully they will improve. Only other way is to make all business owners get a Phd on food processing😅 ,tbh I think which is more easy than fixing GST

The idea that an affluent person can afford a higher GST rate is absurd. Most of the affluent people also pay income taxes, higher GST rate and also don't get benefits of public services like schools and hospitals. The govt least can do is to rationalize GST rates

Our food related regulations are not enforced. In effect, they are voluntary. It has huge impact when it comes to tax them appropriately. Food makers don't know how to estimate their food prices because there are no strict rules. We copy many things from west, it's high time that we make appropriate rules and have a better equipped authorities to enforce them.

If they applied this much brain in good governance then they won't need to debate on yogurt and curd. Income will increase and they can apply flat rates. We are the only country where people have to pay income tax then have to face complex GST system with rates as high as 18%. Atleast give half the GST amount back to income tax payers.
