What you describe is a nation that sees those expenditures as an investment in its citizenry, for the overall good of the society. The VA opened a clinic in my town about 6 years ago and I started going there just to check it out. The care is so good that I dropped my employer's ridiculously expensive health insurance plan and use the VA exclusively. The care I receive is much better and it saves me quite a bit of money. Once a year I do have to drive to the nearest VA hospital which is about 45 minutes away but other than that minor inconvenience, I'm completely happy with it. Anybody who says that socialized medicine--and make no mistake, this is exactly what the VA health care system is--doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.

The worst that can happen is that after various threats, intimidation, and retaliation they are required to hold a second vote that they almost always then win. It is even more common industry practice than individual arbitration clauses and wage theft. there was a time that the working class actually rose which was between the 1940's and the 1970's. Not coincidentally this was when government programs were at their height, social programs were strong and corporate taxes were high. It didn't lead to laziness or anything, it let to a class of hard working people. Because while many don't like to hear it, the promise of social and economic mobility is far more effective an incentive than the threat of poverty. if people don't believe they can improve their social standing then they are not going to try and will do the absolute bare minimum. It's the classic saying that you can keep a slave busy but you can't make him work.

One of the most common arguements ive heard against medicare for all have been "why should my tax dollars go towards someone elses insurance?" As well as "i dont want to give up my private insurance, i love it." That mentality plus any disinformation campaigns sponsored by our politicians along with lobbying $$$$ from big insurance, pharma etc prevent this idea from growing organically here. As an Australian, what America calls socialism is what other countries call looking after it's citizens for the benefit of all of us. We have 3 months at half pay maternal and paternal leave paid by the govt, many companies also pay their workers this, full time employees get 10 days personal leave (for sick, bereavement and carers leave), 20 days annual leave, our minimum wage is over $21 an hour, average weekly wages over $1,200, most skilled labour, tradesmen, teachers, Police, etc would earn ^$80K, pretty much all my health care is covered under my taxes, but i also have private insurance (moreso as a tax incentive than a health necessity), oh and we're not still arguing whether climate change is real or not or whether women deserve the right to control their own bodies.

@@johnlast8578 government subsidies to huge banks and corporations are corporate welfare aka corporate socialism- taken in sums of millions and billions to prevent them from collapse, due to either a bad decision or an unforeseen world catastrophe (9/11, covid, etc) - if you simplify it, the left just wants the same benefits extended to actual people who will use the money to provide a real safety net for whatever hard times they’ve fallen on. I don’t see how one could argue that this isn’t fair considering how much money has gone to faceless corporations who are supposed to spread the money around to retain their workforce , but of course it never makes it there. The same people who get bail outs also pay tiny fractions of taxes on what they really make, so not only are they not paying into the system that they benefit Massively off of in good times, and that provides that life raft during the hardest times, but they’re getting paid out in hard times and pocketing most of the money while they lay off people and people go hungry , people can’t meet basic needs, etc. Why is it too much to ask that the people who actually pay the majority of the taxes be able to receive the same kind of safety net as corporations when they’re in crisis. We have the means to do it, but because of the hijacking and coopting of certain phrases , with social media taking all nuance and reasonability out of any debate and the legislative filibuster preventing these corporatists from even having to honestly defend their position on the floor of congress leads to inaction, further inequity , and more public resentment. We’re barely better than Russia , yet a lot of people have this false notion of the “greatness” of America , how great are we really if this is how we operate?

Thank you Jon Stewart for going to bat for the heroes of 9-11 who congress and senate were screwing over. You kept the pressure on them and put their toes to the flames, some tend to forget that you are a man of high caliber. I only wish that our elected officials had the fortitude to press forward in these issues and help out those who are working class and below poverty to be free not worry about where their next meal will be coming from or how to pay bills plus keep food on the table and clothes on their children’s backs.

The argument from the right is a workers total compensation is reflective of how much they contribute to society/how much value they produce and by supplementing an individual's total compensation with additional state benefits you are in fact giving people healthcare. On the other side though you could reasonably argue that employers have far too much bargaining power driving down total compensation lower than what an individual is actually owed. Robert Reich is very persuasive on this. I think the answer is to tell corporations they cannot engage in share buybacks or dividends and their stock is taken off the stock exchange if they don't meet certain criteria such as 1) executives make no more than a 15X multiple of the median worker 2) workers got a wage increase this year 3) at least 15% of the reported profits were paid in taxes 4) the corporation expanded operations in America/engaged in research and development. 5) a percentage of the board of directors is made up of workers I think this addresses the power differential and we let the total compensation piece play itself out. Healthcare is a legitimate political choice citizens can make but they should recognize that the social spending in Europe drove their economy down from 40% of global GDP to around 20 and still shrinking. These countries have around 40%+ tax rates on the middle class, and virtually no innovation in their economies. It's a choice people can make but at least be honest about the trade offs.

Mr. Stewart, as always, you've presented the unvarnished truth through overlooked facts and fed it in small bite sized portions like a father to the small child representing the blind populaces of the world. Too many people mistake communism for socialism, when, in fact, there are already some very good socialistic programs functioning in the United States, like public water works, DMV, road working programs, and the police forces of each area. People don't realize that these are all socialistic programs, that may have some flaws in their operations due to underfunding or bad employees, but their core ideas are solid. Honestly, as with all things humans do, some other humans come and mess it up for everybody, but that's just the way things tend to function in this life. Granted, if these newer socialistic programs are implemented, inevitably somebody will attempt to exploit the rules pertaining to the correct function of the newer socialistic programs, but it should help a lot more people than are being helped with the highly exploited programs we are under today that function with the general principle of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. I would say I'm worried that they will kill you for speaking the truth, but you've been speaking the truth for quite a while and haven't caught a bullet yet, so yeah, there's that...

I realized what I like in him the most. Other similar talk hosts like Trevor, Seth or Stephen are talking in long sentences in a very fast pace. They are stuffing all the message they can put into a sentence, hammering it into your mind. Jon on the other hand has air, has time. He gives you time to think and unpack the message on your own. It is a much better delivery. I just get tired of the others. I am not that stupid that I cannot be trusted with a little mental function on my own. Jon is the best.

@@madprole5361 it truly is, but I've always seen it more as a baby step toward educating people. You have to start from the point most people are at, which, sadly, hasn't changed much in over 50 years: "capitalism = good, socialism = bad". Make them realize that the government will never be "neutral", and it clearly isn't right now. It either answers to capital / the rich, or to the people. It's a baby step to cut through the propaganda, which is unfortunately needed as propaganda is evidently still working depressingly well.

I actually have calloused hands still after working as a carpenter's assistant for eight years because I fell in love with a carpenter, Once Upon a Time.
