I notice in the revenge ending Dimitri wasn’t prepared or expected Niko to come to the Platypus. Once he sees that Niko eliminates all his men, he first tries to threaten Niko but at this point Niko doesn’t care or isn’t afraid of him. It’s not surprising that he got desperate and begs for mercy when he realizes that Niko can’t be negotiated or intimated by his connections. Dimitri and Devin Weston are similar is that they both like to use people for their dirty work and think they are untouchable. Once they are in a situation where they are cornered and powerless by someone who can’t be bought or negotiated, they go down like cowards.
@CevicheGato Жыл бұрын
And there’s a difference. Dimitri would be in a boss fight against Niko. While Trevor only knocked Devin Weston’s head and he’s out cold and in the black car trunk until Trevor reunites with Franklin and Michael at the pacific coast highway during sunset. Wakes up and hears about Michael gloating of his rich man’s actions and the fact that he gets stuck in the trunk and they move the car blowing it up unknowingly. Happy ending. While Dimitri ends up cowering when he’s bleeding out and pleading Niko to not kill him and Niko just doesn’t care and kills him and does it in a way that he suffers way more than Devin. And also of course because Dimitri made a deal with Jimmy Pegorino to split the heroin money and help Jimmy elevate his Alderney glorified crew to the mafia family status. Before his death by the hands of Niko in the Platypus ship. The ship Niko came to Liberty City in. But instead he’s only reduced to a wannabe gangster who acts like he’s only acting like a movie monster instead of being a real serious monster boss. And accidentally kills Nikos girlfriend Kate. So even though Niko killed Dimitri, his dead influence created a consequence for Niko.
@ntrainr160 Жыл бұрын
@@CevicheGato I know Trevor wont really care about Dimitri and Devin as enemies. One of the reasons why they were such a threat to Niko and Micheal De Santa is that both have levers that can be pulled on such as their families. Devin and Dimitri won't hesitate to use their families as leverage. Micheal was scared of Martin once Trevor pissed him off for this reason. Niko was worried more about Roman's safety since Niko's enemies can use that against him.

it's simple... 1. Niko has no value for Dimitri (after he used him to kill Fuastin) 2. Dimitri needs to play nice with Bulgarin since Bulgarin do have a lot a business value (they both took part in the big Heroin deal at the end of the story, TBoGT ending show it clearly) This would also explain why he tries to impress Bulgarin by being more proactive in killing Niko. 3. at some point Dimitri just have to tie the loose end (which is Niko) from fear of Niko hunting him down (Dimitri had no way of Knowing/trusting that Niko will let him live after trying to kill Niko several times burning down Roman's house and cab depot, kidnapping Roman and more) ALSO... who TF thought that he just goes crazy 03:14 ???? if you call Dimitri on the way to Bohan (Final Destination) Niko will ask Dimitri if he should kill Petrovic's son, and Dimitri doesn't stop him... Man, I know that Faustin was a wife abusing, faithless and psycho douchebag, but he's one of Niko's few bosses that truly was loyal to him and respected his work, not to mention that he wasn't even planning to have Niko killed like Dimitri said. Another thing that made Dimitri one of the best antagonists in the series is because he's realistic and not exaggerated like the typical Hollywood bad guys, in a way that someone like him can exist in real life. Deceiving, friendly at first, calm and in the end, turns out to be a venomous snake with a burning grudge for his ex friend that he used and to completely ruin their life no matter what.

I'm not sure if anyone else has pointed it out but while playing I actually found something that is a clever clue to Dimitri's betrayal of Faustin (and by extension his real role.) So, we know that when you aim your weapon at an enemy, the life bars in the circle are red. And for pedestrians or friends, they are green. Well in the mission where you kill Faustin, there is something interesting when you get to the execution. When you aim your reticle on him, the outer circle is blinking red, indicating you can perform an execution. But unlike other executable characters, the life bars inside the circle are GREEN. Very weird that they are green when this is supposed to be a dangerous and powerful enemy we are killing. But the green is actually the last hint you get to Dimitri's betrayal of Faustin, indicating that he is actually innocent / not an enemy in this situation. This is then immediately followed by his betrayal of you. When I saw this little detail I was fascinated and just had to tell someone. The attention to detail in this game is insane.

He never betrayed anyone. Even Michael who betrayed him. He still cared about him despite his anger towards him and wants nothing to do with Franklin after he kills him because he killed his best friend, and because Franklin betrayed him. He genuinely loves Patricia and I think it shown Trevor to have a sweet side to him. And even though he hates Michael and despises Amanda he cares for Jimmy and Tracy as if they were his own children and they love him as well. He promised when they were babies that he would always protect them. Yeah, he's criminally insane but he has a heart. If Trevor ever met Dimitri and knew about all the people he's betrayed Trevor would likely disembowel him and strangle him with his own entrails.

TBH I think what you describes alludes to the difference in story quality between IV and V. GTA V benefited massively from the tongue-in-cheek nature and loonytoon-esque quality of the characters and parody setting, but GTA IV story and characters feel so much more grounded and dare I say relatable. Trevor can come across as some kind of dual personality failure in writing. Probably Niko would respect Luis, as Nunzio said. Niko could also associate with Luis alone, as Tony has seemingly left Liberty City after Ray Bulgarin’s assassination. He could probably get involved in the nightlife scene and buy a stake in the clubs, perhaps encouraged by Roman, too. They could very well become friends, but thinking how much of a mess Luis did to the diamond deal and Niko had to deal with that mess, they would had to reconcile somewhat, but I think for Niko it would be considered business. Question is, how Luis would get along with him due to the stress Gracie’s kidnap cause Tony.

@SAUCE GOD Ray wanted Niko dead because he believed that he screwed him over on purpose, again because of his paranoia, same with Luis. Something that police interrogators can notice to determine a liar is the length and detail of someone's story. Truthful stories are usually succinct, only what is necessary. I've always been impressed by how the writers of the game introduce Dimitri as this calm level headed man who essentially comes off as Faustins bitch and has the player thinking "oh he's harmless and probably not someone to worry about".... I genuinely thought that after you kill Faustin, Dimitri just pays you off and disappears from the story never to be seen again or he falls back into a minor role. So for him to do a complete 180 and reveal himself to be this maniacal, despicable and evil character who you grow to genuinely hate as the game progresses was absolutely brilliant. Top tier writing and excellent storytelling by the writers of the game. The game doesn't get enough credit for giving us THE MOST hated GTA antagonist in the entire series. In that one scene, you can see how Faustin views Dimitri vs How Dimitri sees him. Faustin says "I fucking love you" and Dimitri responds "I know this". There's no warmth, no appreciation, no reciprocity. It's someone giving all their emotion and another giving the bare minimum. It makes Dimitri's lie about protecting Niko even worse, since you mentioned how he swapped places in the conversation. "-a friend like you is useful". Appreciation and loyalty are what Faustin likes, but when Dimitri heard Niko could be "useful" he agreed. Niko was so useful, he got him to kill the 'brother' standing in his way. More evidence that Dimitri was going along with Lennys assassination was by literally telling Faustin about him. Dimitri of all people would’ve known what Mikhail would’ve done if he knew who might’ve been the rat and still decided to tell him which shows that he really did want to see Lenny get killed. You can tell that Faustin might not have been completely sober and was having trouble thinking of who the rat was but Dimitri still jogged his memory to trigger Faustin to make niko kill Lenny.
@justsomeguy7473 жыл бұрын
Being honest, I don’t think that was Dimitri’s intention. Look at it this way - if Dimitri really wanted Lenny dead and went along with it, do you think it is highly probable that Dimitri could have calculated that Petrovic could have possibly killed him, just for being Faustin’s right hand man? Dimitri is calculating, he doesn’t make mistakes very often. He had value for Mikhail but he realised that his usefulness has ran out, so he discarded him because he couldn’t take anymore the possibility that he could suffer for Mikhail’s decisions. In the end, it’s possible that Petrovic still wanted Niko dead and trusted Dimitri and possibly Bulgarin carrying out the task. It could be a reason for Dimitri selling out Niko, because for Ray it would be more practical to employ Niko and have him earn the money lost, and eventually even to make him Ray’s legitimate business partner, as he wanted with Luis Lopez.
@justsomeguy7473 жыл бұрын
@SAUCE GOD Who knows bro. I think it probably would have been a Martin-Michael situation. The reason why Martin didn't simply kill Michael for his decision to pull his mistress' house is because he knew that Michael knows how to handle himself and has a temper. I would even dare to suggest that he knew that Michael was under Dave's protection. Ray sought to punish Niko, because he needed someone to suffer the consequences for the money lost, rather than take responsibility. Ray is a smart man, guided by his intution, but he makes very reckless decisions because of his paranoia. I wish that his backstory would be explored somehow in the next GTA. Even if Ray was deported at the time, he could have operated in the US using a fake identity. Ray should have employed Niko instead, like Martin did, in a way. Martin was probably aware of who Michael was, as crazy as it sounds. He was smart to blackmail him, and even paid him for his work. A similar situation was between Sonny and Tommy. Tommy worked to earn Sonny's cut, but Sonny grow paranoid and hostile because Tommy wasn't passing him tribute. I think that Tommy wanted to repay him the money, just wanted to enjoy his empire's expansion first, and in my opinion, he just thought of himself. Tommy just wanted power and in spite of Sonny being similar to him in terms of temper, desire for power, greed and intelligence, he couldn't see past his ego.

I truly delight in the terror in Dimitri's voice while begging for his life. That execution is one of the most satisfying in the game. He acted like he was untouchable until he wasn't, then you see him for what he truly is. A pathetic, backstabbing, sniveling coward who can't take what he dishes out. A fitting end for such a irredeemable character. It makes so much sense that he's most likely a clinical psychopath. He calls and taunts/threatens Niko several times throughout the story and tries to have him killed several times. Then when his bodyguards are all dead at the hands of Niko, he starts pleading like a sniveling coward. Psychopaths usually have no true fear, but the one thing they DO fear is consequences. An example is Ted Bundy in the days he was to be executed. He sobbed the night before his execution, but I guarantee it wasn't for his victims or for remorse of any kind but rather the fact that the next day, he is about to pay the ultimate consequence for his actions. Apparently on his final walk to the chair, his knees buckled and the guards had to carry him by his arms the last few steps and place him in the chair. Ted Bundy had no qualms about brutally murdering and defiling dozens of innocent young women but when it was his turn to die, he wasn't ready and was terrified. Another is Charles Manson. When he originally got the death penalty, he was actually quite shook. He didn't want to die. But when California changed the capital punishment laws and his sentence got commuted to life, Charles was thrilled. He LOVED prison. He spent almost his whole life in prison, it's where he is most comfortable. In a way, he got away with what he did since prison isn't REALLY a punishment for him. Getting executed on the other hand, definitely is. A great video, Professional! I really hope you make more GTA IV related lore videos. Such a great game.

I think dimitri wanted to kill Faustin from the beginning, like you said he was being manipulative by trying to act as the reasonable of the 2, making niko side with him. But what truly shows how little he cares about faustin is the treatment of his family. When Jim died after Johnny betrayed ray Johnny decided to gave the money he stole from ray to his family. We never see his family so we don’t know how close it’s Jim family to Johnny, but that shows how Johnny cares about them and how guilty he feels about indirectly causing his death. The same with Michael if he gets killed in ending B, if he gets killed then Lester gives his cut of the heist to his family instead of keeping it to himself, he doesn’t do that with trevor because aside from his mom (who could be dead or in prison) he doesn’t have known living relatives, wade and ron are only employees, so is not difficult to see why Lester doesn’t feel obligated to gave them his cut. Meanwhile dimitri who directly send the assassin after him didn’t try to help out his family, only would think that he would feel guilty and would try to help them. He says to niko that there wasn’t any choice... but he specifically created the situation where he could have the choice of killing faustin without consequences, he simply doesn’t have remorse for killing faustin or crewing over his family. If anything niko have more remorse considering he can’t look faustin wife at the eye and accepts to help her. I think the reason why dimitri constantly betrays people, even jimmy pegorino in the deal ending, is because now he has the power to backstab people without consequences. I imagine that if he tried to do that while faustin was still around he would be in a lot of trouble, something like big smoke who couldn’t deal with drugs because sweet was still in charge of the gang, once he was out he was able to become a drug lord.

Thank you so much Patrick. This is a truly masterpiece of a video. I’ve recently beaten GTA 4 again and watching this video educated me so much!

I love your character analysis here and explanation of what an actual psychopath is. Also how you explain that not all psychopaths are criminals/bad people.
@Thejordanenthusiast Жыл бұрын
With this lore analysis, for me this confirms that the Revenge ending is the better, more sensible ending; Roman, Bernie and other characters constantly told Niko to get over his past with Darko and they’re not wrong, but with Dimitri it was different. His betrayal was a lot more recent and he’s been on the hunt for weeks, maybe months, to kill Niko and stopped at nothing to see him dead (he foreshadowed this with the quote “Wherever you go,people will find you if they want to badly enough.”) and he constantly showed that he’d continue to be a threat ,so killing him at the Platypus made a lot more sense, along with Niko’s moral code.

Even though Dimitri is smiling and wants Niko to get pissed during the phone call after Roman what Niko said to him was priceless it was one of my favorite phone calls in the game. All I could think about after that was where Niko hanged up the face after you kill him🤣🤦

I can feel your anger when talking about Dmitiri and I can’t blame you. After all the worst thing about betrayal is it doesn’t come from the enemy.

This is a great video, you're really perceptive and keen on Dimitri's more subtle manipulations throughout the game. But you spend a lot of time repeating yourself and there's a handful of superfluous information that can be trimmed from the video. That said, I would really love to see a video like this on Billy and TLAD as a whole, as well as some of the interesting shakespearean influences and references in the story.

Man, you're a genius. It so happened that I had to start playing this game like three times, and I never ever asked myself why Dimitri was stabbing everyone in the back. Now I understand that I saw the story of this game at a wrong angle. Your video made me revalue it, as well as the characters. Dimitri is really the perfect example of an antagonist, both in movies and games. A pure evil thing in a human body. The suit he wears throughout the entire game used to remind me of Nikolai, the antagonist of a movie called the Equalizer, as well as his character, to some extent. But considering it's a GTA franchise, I'd like to bring up one more antagonist from earlier GTAs who's almost a perfect copy of Dimitri (or vice versa). Sgt. Jerry Martinez, the antagonist of GTA Vice City Stories, another example of a very good antagonist and of a man of pure malice.If you look closely, you'll see the obvious similarities between Dimitri and him. 1) Both appear at the beginning of the game, betray the protagonist and reappear only in the ending. Throughout the story both make moves from the shadows and create different obstacles for the protagonist. Both kidnap a person dear to the protagonist and hold them hostage (Roman and Louise). 2) Both pretend to be the protagonist's friends, manipulating him (Dimitri tricked Niko into killing Mikhail, Jerry made Vic be his drug courier and work for him with Phil) and eventually betraying him (both of them lured the protagonist into a secluded location to ambush them). Martinez betrayed even Phil whom seemed to have known for quite a decent time (possibly they were good business partners, as Jerry mentions Phil sells all the guns "we can get him"). Why he betrayed his good business associate is still a mystery to me. 3) Both vowed to pursue the protagonist and kill them no matter what (Dimitri calls Niko, Jerry sends a pager message saying that Vic and Phil are still "on his shit list" and warning them they'd "better leave town"). 4) Both get pleasure by making others suffer (Dimitri hurts and then possibly kills Roman, Jerry kidnaps, beats and possibly rapes Louise). They show that by text messages as well ("Your friend, Dimitri". "Louise was real sweet to me, man. Tell her I'll see her again, real soon...". Before the kidnapping Martinez also texts Vic and tells him about "paying his lady a visit". He threatens to pay Louise a visit for the third time when she's already in hospital). Both have no remorse over their actions (Martinez probably knew Louise had a baby, yet he kidnapped her, attempting to do that again later). 5) Both use convenient circumstances and people only necessary to them, terminating those who aren't of any use to them any more (Martinez sells drugs while he's in the army, covering himself from the police. He uses Vic and Phil but then stabs them in the back. He works with the Mendez brothers but immediately turns states when he feels he's screwed after Vic and Lance steal the Mendez's coke. He also tells the government official that "he could've taken his chances with the Mendez brothers", thus showing he could as well turn to them for help. Nevertheless, before that he tells Vic on the phone that he was gonna "ruin him, his brother, Mendez, everyone". He's got his fingers in every pie but if need be, he'll get rid of any, just like Dimitri. In the final mission he doesn't help the Mendez against Victor, leaving them at his mercy, despite the fact that there could have been a good business relationship between them some time ago (to the point where he used a military chopper to cover the Mendez' coke-loaded trucks). Instead, only when they are wiped out by Victor, he personally shows up to battle him.) Analysing all this, I think Martinez is also a psychopath, yet a very clever and dangerous one. He too betrayed everyone he came into contact with, he has no remorse either, and he manipulates others, undoubtedly living by that "survival of the fittest thing" principle. That's why I think he and Dimitri are the best GTA antagonists: ruthless, clever, purely evil. The ones you will never hesitate to kill and the ones that deserve to be called antagonists. And, what's more important, the ones who have more than the eye can see under their skin. I knew their stories were somewhat similar but it wasn't until I watched your video that I realized they were nearly alike. Yet both are unique in many ways. And that's why they'll always be my favorite antagonists. Thank you for reading all this if you've read it up to this point) And thank you, Professional, for such a catching and great video! Wish you good luck with your channel and much joy from gaming!
