These kinds of "bad" contracts were pretty standard for manufactured pop groups especially back then. The way to make money was to either renegotiate contracts of the group achieves huge success or pivot to another record company or career - as Sophie Monk did when she headed to the US to do film before returning to Austtalia to do TV and radio.

It wasn't the first TV reality show by any means, not even the first music one. The first PopStars series was aired in New Zealand before Australia and launched girl group TrueBliss and it was sold as a franchise to Australian TV. But yes, one of the first.
