Hi Ro! Been binge watching your videos and am absolutely HOOKED. I recently started my BA in Psychology and was wondering which bachelors degree you did? Also wondering if there's a difference between a BA or BSc in Psychology and how each degree can affect following the path you went down? thanks a lot!
@thepsychdiaries2 жыл бұрын
I did a bachelors of psychology (honours) at UNSW which basically gauranteed me an honours position however bachelor of science (major in psychology) was largely the same. I'd probbaly recommend checking with each individual uni for course structures 😊

Thanks Ro, awesome video and great exam revision for me 😁 You mentioned working in public health during your undergrad. What kind of role did you have and what made you decide to move into private practice?
@thepsychdiaries2 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry Nikki! I meant post-grad haha. It was during masters placements. And then priv prac was just when I graduated (because public health roles are super competitive)

Hello! I know I'm late to your videos, but I absolutely love them! They're really helpful as I am someone who wants to get into psychology and a fellow Austarlian. I was wondering if as a child psychologist, are you able to diagnose and treat mental disorders present in children and is this the same with adults? or different?
@thepsychdiaries2 жыл бұрын
In masters you get trained for both and then people can choose which areas they want to work with (most people prefer adults only but I like both!)
@juliamatthews85772 жыл бұрын
@@thepsychdiaries That's actually really helpful, thank you! Although, I was still curious, if you don't mind answering, but after you become a qualified psychologist can you diagnose mental disorders? or is that something that only psychiatrists can do in Australia? So like, put simply, psychiatrists can prescribe medicine, which psychologists cannot, but can psychologists diagnose mental disorders?

Hi Ro, thanks for another great video! I think you said in your undergrad you were involved in the public mental health system. What capacity was that in? I didn’t realise that it would be possible prior to post-grad. Also, how useful do you think it would be to get experience working with say, a volunteer crisis line as an undergrad?
@thepsychdiaries2 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry! My mistake- that was in masters post-grad, it was part of our placement :) unfortunately you're right, I'm not sure I've ever heard of placements prior to masters

hi there! I'm currently thinking about switching to psychology and i'm kind of confused about a couple of things 😅When exactly do you start getting paid? I've done some research and there's no conclusive answer. Some articles suggest you get paid while still studying during your masters or work experience and then some say its after graduating. Also, how many years of experience do you need to make a higher salary? Or does it depend on the company, location etc? Love your videos btw! 💕✨
@thepsychdiaries2 жыл бұрын
I started getting paid after I graduated masters! (thats the clinical psychology pathway). For general psychologists some can even find internships after honours where they can start getting paid :)

Hi after watching your videos clinical psychology ticks all my box’s for my dream job that being said there is still a box that is unchecked and that is trauma. I really want to know if clinical psychology deals with trauma and if so how much, I have been through a lot of trauma myself and I have always wanted to help others through their trauma. So can you specialise in trauma as a clinical psychologist.

Whats the difference between a therpist and a psychologist?
@neena182 жыл бұрын
Hi! May I know your opinions about someone who suffers from depression and / or anxiety but wants to pursue being a Psychologist? Like is it possible, especially ethically and professionally? If not, would you recommend for them to take the research route instead of an actual practitioner? If so, is it possible for you to discuss more about being a researcher in the Psych field? I'm really sorry for having a lot of quesrions 😭

I just thought I would let you know that I recently asked this very question of my own psychologist before applying to my degree. She said not to let that get in the way at all as such a large proportion of society are struggling with mental health issues, especially when you are a student pursuing a degree/career. As long as you are taking active measures to look after your own mental health so you can feel the best you can then why not. She also mentioned Peer Workers, who have real life experience with mental health issues who can assist others. That is an additional pathway you can consider. I hope this helps :)
@thepsychdiaries2 жыл бұрын
Of course! Gosh the incidence of depression and anxiety is so high if we got rid of anyone who had lived experience we'd have way fewer psychologists. Totally agree with Jade, as long as you are stable and have capacity/ engage in self care I think it's completely fine :) I also see my own psych to make sure I have support.

What subjects did you choosed in uni both for bachelor's and master's? Looking up to be someone like you💞

For bachelor's and masters most subjects they determine for you! So in masters I didn't get any choices- in undergrad just choose what interests you within the different areas of psych!

Thank you for sharing- if the anxiety is getting in the way of you living the way you want then reaching out for help is always a good idea. :) However it also doesn't mean you can't practice (best to consult a clinical supervisor on this for specifics!) Good luck

In terms of working with a school to help students within those brackets in a school setting, is it possible if you didn’t specialize in education psychology 💗🥰
@thepsychdiaries2 жыл бұрын
Yes i think so! Ive school psych roles which only require a masters of clinical psychology :)
@miamia141002 жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible! It depends on the country (or even provincial/state) guidelines whether working in psychology requires a masters or PhD (where I’m from in Canada, it requires a PhD to diagnose). Given the shortage of school/educational psychs, many schools hire those with counselling or clinical psych backgrounds. The training is a bit different. I have both clinical child and school psych degree, and they focussed a lot on interacting with teachers and school personnel and how to adapt intervention for the school setting. As long as you have a good basis of psycho educational assessment, the rest is easily learned on the job.
