football philosophy wise, would you pay him special QB money? going rate will be $65+m/yr by 2025 when he's eligible for an extension. that's what trent, deebo, cmc, kittle, & aiyuk made combined this season. technically they have no choice because carr & daniel jones are making ~$40mill, but what if a team like the raiders gave you a russell or bryce type offer: two 1sts, two 2nds, a pro bowler (LT kolton miller makes just under $14m/yr), and aidan o'connell.

@PaulGaither 8 ай бұрын
@FakeAccount-rx9qy - Honest answer? You let this Super Bowl and all of next year AND half or whatever it is of 2025 play out while you figure the answer to that question. The cap rolls over, and the 49ers have intentionally made moves to be $35m+ under the cap this year so as to roll over expenses into next season. They originally wanted Lance to be "the guy", so there were always long term plans to have him and his 5th year extension lead to the same time line of a pay day. This wasn't some shock in terms of a projected cap hit. Aiyuk and then Brock are the only stars not under a long term future deal. It isn't like Bosa, Deebo, Fred and others have deals around the corner. Also, several have been front loaded to intentionally leave space on the back end in these coming years, and so they wouldn't cost much if they had to be cut/traded in the future. Other organizations like to backload contracts to "win now" and then suffer with or without a ring. Kyle and Lynch have been extended yet again and are playing the long game in all phases. Even if Brock gets paid big, like Jimmy g was once made the highest paid qB in the NFL, they will likely front load him so - like with Jimmy - they could get out of the deal early (2-3 years into a 5+ year deal) with little or no hit. Kyle and Lynch are not mortgaging their future for the present and never have been.

@@ronbintscatcoyou just can’t give up an elite QB once you find one. They’re way too hard to replace. Hence the price tag. I think Purdy isn’t even up for debate, the hard part is who else you trade to pay him. It looked like Aiyuk had enough spacing when Purdy started the pass that he would run by the DB when he released it. He envisioned that circus catch to be clean in the endzone in stride. Looked like the db knew the route by the leverage and bumped Aiyuk off his route. Except the db couldn't catch it through the contact. Ball bounced up where Aiyuk could make a play. single coverage 1 on 1 and Purdy trusted Aiyuk to go make a play.

JT doesn't say this but what's interesting to me is that EVERY analyst who says the Purdy throw to aiyuk was a bad throw and over thrown and "should have been picked" NEVER mentions that there was a PI called because the defender slowed down aiyuk and prevented him from being right where the ball was. How is it overthrown or a bad throw when it would have been spot on had the defender not interfered and got called for it...? Why do they leave that very important detail out?

My guess is because pass interference doesn't always get called so you shouldn't really bank on it. I could easily see no flag thrown and the defender happened to intercept it.

I believe the reason that the Niners run the motion from 5 yards back, is to allow the intermediate routes to open up easier. Aiyuk gets behind the linebacker and the linebacker comes up to cover the route that starts back. They both break on the route at about the same time forcing the linebacker to decide between the intermediate or short with. If they both start at the line the safety immediately picks up the deep route. Just causes a bit of confusion for the defense.
@Wolfeson28
@Wolfeson28 8 ай бұрын
Ya, I mean you can see it when that play runs. If CMC had started on the line of scrimmage and run the route 3-4 yards deeper like JT was suggesting, that middle LB who was breaking on the route just blows him up instead of tackling him after the catch. The point of starting CMC farther back is 1) to prevent defenders from being able to jam him, and 2) delaying when the defenders are able to see and react to what route CMC's actually running, making it more likely that the routes in front of him will move the defenders out of position.

Overall, certainly usual top notch analysis of Purdy's play however, I do have one bone to pick regarding Deebo 19; the man is being held together with bailing wire and I'm sure his coaches told him don't get involved in tackle scrums it anything to re-injure your bad shoulder which has a fracture so I'm sure the coaches know exactly what he's doing No, I certainly haven't watched any other film of Devo, but he's been injured since the early fall so perhaps you've seen this before /240129

Great breakdown JT. Purdy has the qb processing power, guts and throwing ability to get the ball to where it needs to be. Now, he's showing that he can extend plays and use his legs as well. Game manager/system qb my ass! This dude is going to be lighting up the league for the next decade.

47:00 - CJGJ got 19Problemz on his mind. Overplayed Deebo's slant, and allowed for the Aiyuk inside throw. Certainly it wasn't like CJGJ lost the game there for DET because their offense dropped some balls, but that was 3rd and goal with SF down 14. If he made that play who knows where this game would become.

Per the NFL rulebook: "It is pass interference by either team when any act by a player more than one yard beyond the line of scrimmage significantly hinders an eligible player’s opportunity to catch the ball [while in the air]." Significant is defined as a change not due to random chance, no matter how small. The defender's contact clearly alters the receiver's stride and path. The BA Ricochet was definitely defensive PI. The CB has a right to the ball, but not to run through the WR or impede his progress. Incidental contact is running side by side, both going for the ball. Vildor knew that he was beat and deliberately hit Aiyuk. They picked up the flag because BA caught the ball.

Thanks for another awesome breakdown of what turned out to be a thrilling game, and a huge moment for Purdy specifically. I apologize for nitpicking on what's probably the one place in this video that I would disagree, but on the improvised Juszczyk catch over the middle (starting at 12:48), there is absolutely no way that he was trying to run a corner route. He's faking a block on a play-action and then running some kind of short stop over the middle. To me, this looks very similar to the play vs. the Cowboys in the divisional round last year where Kittle made a crazy catch in a very similar situation - on that play, Kittle was blocking and wasn't really even in the progression. I mean, look at Juszczyk's release from any of the endzone angles. He's cutting *inside* of a guy looking to rush (#46) and clearly looking to stay in his way for the first couple of seconds until Purdy boots out to the left. If his assignment was to run a corner route, he would absolutely be releasing *outside* of #46 - there's no way he cuts inside of #46 and intentionally gets himself jammed if his goal off the line is to sprint vertically.
@Wolfeson28
@Wolfeson28 8 ай бұрын
13:43 Ya...definitely looks like you lost that bet. Jonnydel (a guy who knows Shanahan's offense inside and out) just covered that play in his weekly breakdown, and sure enough, Juszczyk was initially running an 8-yard stop route right over the middle. Again though, I'm nitpicking that one detail, but otherwise this was a great video with some top-level analysis.

@31:50 - On the high throw over the middle to Jennings and the question of whether it's "lucky" or "good" is about how it looks and the Purdy's history....with a rookie/sophomore player, especially one with a history of interceptions, you'd probably see a throw like that and go, "yikes!" Brady or Mahomes make that same throw, and you call them a playmaker and gush about the skill level. With Purdy, I think it's closer to the playmaker type play. He didn't just force it back over the middle. He got his hips & torso turned around, then put the ball just far enough where the LB couldn't get his hands on it, but in line where Jennings could get it. The throw wasn't late or over/underthrown. Nobody claims that he didn't see the other linebacker. He clearly saw the defender, and threw the ball with intent and purpose to the one spot where it needed to be, and in a spot where the LB had no real chance for an interception even if Jennings missed it. If Purdy was "unlucky," the worst that would have happened was a safe incompletion. Purdy has connected on enough plays like that over the last 1.5 seasons--where even his misses have been in "safe" enough spots--that I feel more confident in that being a play that Purdy made rather than luck. As JT correctly points out.....if the ball had been thrown straight to the receiver's numbers, it probably gets picked. Another QB (cough.....Jimmy G) might have tried to force that into his chest with bad consequences. "Luck" is throwing the ball up, not knowing where it will go, not seeing all the hazards out there, hoping something good comes out of it. "Playmaking" is putting the ball where you intended it to go, in the one and only place it could be.

At 9:10, that CMC shift is suppose to slow down the pass rush for a possible screen pass to CMC. That's why these shifts are kind of weird to the viewers. Only the defenders know how much to account for it. CMC and Deebo gets a lot of attention for them because they are threats at catching the ball in the backfield. Defenders didn't fall for it. In that case don't take a sack or turn the ball over, just get closer for a FG. Shanahan's conservative play calling. And they missed the FG.

The play that bounces off of the helmet is definitely NTT from Detroit. You can see 6 take a step towards the flat before backing off when there's no routes to threaten the flat. The safety sits because he's that "middle runner" player in this snap of NTT. Just tough against Tampa to navigate the middle player to drive the post down the middle to Aiyuk if the middle player drives on the dig or to rip the dig if the middle player stays vertical
