Very interesting analysis. I was already adopting "the new technique" proposed by this channel and my stroke still keeps improving. Butterfly is the stroke where you really feel the water. Swimming in full harmony with the water and in a relax mode is the key for a successful performance.

Talk about the nuances of stroke technique, I was told by a fellow swimmer to tuck the chin, but never heard the neck extension as being an element. Thanks to the coaches and the two young ladies for demonstrating that head position is so important.

In fly, the neck/head goes through nearly a full range of motion from complete extension (forward) to nearly full flexion (downward). Helps keep the shoulders down and gain more kinetic energy for coupling with the down kick.

Yes! Proof! I'm not a competitive swimmer but I happen to be a pretty good swimming teacher. I'm ok ish at Butterfly (learnt from "A Shaw way to FLY") really good go check it out. I had another teacher who used to race in the 1960 something olympics and kept telling me to keep my head still even though I find it way waaaaay harder. This makes me feel alot better about my style of fly!

Incredible video, ive been very impressed with these in depth analyses. I personally have always felt that it is better to keep head in line because I felt like jutting the chin out made my upper body go out more (hips lower). Do you think this is normal and is worth it, or was I just doing it wrong? Thanks

Thanks. Our studies seem to indicate the opposite. Keeping the head in alignment will result in the upper body coming out of the water more. The coupling effect of the elevated body coming down is greater, but so is the frontal drag. In the end, keeping shoulders lower seems to be better. In other words, use your head.

Can you make a statement for a swimmer who is breathing to the side?

We'll take a look at it. We started with the chin tucked and the chin slightly off of the chest because those are the positions that we see the most. We have measured side breathing with our Velocity Meter and the numbers are significantly lower than either option in the video. However, a side breath does allow some fliers to keep their tempo higher and drag lower. Thanks for watching!

First I would like to congratulate you for your scientific approach and the consistent use of the metric system ( which is a lot more than what NASA did when they destroyed Mars Climate Orbiter) which shows the swimming community is more scientific than the space experts. I shall put this into practice in the pool next. Before I practice this one I’d like to practice the double kick fly. I was instructed the basic version in 1980. I always found this stroke fast for short distances of course!

Thanks for the analysis. You focus on peak acceleration and peak velocity, but how much of a difference was there in the average velocity over the whole swimming interval (maybe after first stroke to last stroke)? It seems like average speed is the most important factor. Also, which technique do you think uses more energy? Thanks!

You are right. Speed is the bottom line. Amanda's average velocity was 2.16 m/sec with a stiff neck and 2.28 m/sec with a moving head. She also did PB at Nationals using the moving head technique. I don't believe that the energy requirement to move the head quickly is enough to exhaust the swimmer.

I learned butterfly 40 years ago and we were thought to snap our heads. For me, it just helped me keep flatter on taking my breath. Still, more things have changed than stayed the same. Good to see not everything is better. Go old farts!

I've a question for @therececlub: when I take breath on each stroke, I move my chin towards my chest (as suggested in this video) and the head contributes (in a decisive way) to the S-motion that characterises this stroke. The head gives an impulse to the start of the underwater motion and I can feel it. However, when I take breath once every two/three strokes, I feel like the head should keep a fixed position (chin close to the chest) till I decide to take breath and restart the cycle. In this case, when I don't lift my head above the water surface, I don't feel any impulse given to the stroke and I'm worried that maybe I'm not swimming correctly. Hope my question is clear enough. Thank you in advance!

During the non-breath strokes, the chin needs to come off the chest in order to generate more propulsion from the pull. But it should not come off very far to keep the frontal drag lower.

Hello! This is a very good study with significant results. I also have a question, as I am watching videos of Michael Phelps, I can see he did not use this technique. Actually, Michael tucked his chin down very close to his chest at the time of hand entry, which is when the peak velocity from the second down kick occurs.

Throwing this out there. There are many variables in this test that could alter the results and I do not think we can draw a conclusion about the head/neck motion when we cannot account for the pattern being pulled underwater. In these videos, you can see a very different catch and pull patter amongst these women.

With Amanda (as with other athletes) our Velocity Meter technology enables us to measure velocity, acceleration and deceleration every .02 seconds. So we can tell exactly what is happening during the different techniques. Each athlete is different, so you are right in not generalizing. For most athletes the snapping of the head down increases the propulsion from the second down kick, leading to more acceleration.

What keeps fly times from reaching freestyle times is that the stroke doesn't take advantage of inertia. With just two down kicks per stroke cycle and both arms pulling at the same time, there is just too much fluctuation in the swimmer's speed to stay with freestyle. WR will come down in 50's but by hundredths of seconds...and rarely by tenths of seconds.

What does "stiff neck" mean? The video contrasts the "active head" approach with a "stiff neck" one, but isn't another option to have a relatively inactive head and a relaxed/loose neck? If anything, the active head/extra neck flexion approach seems to require a stiffer neck (stiff in the chin-extended position on recovery, stiff in the chin-down position immediately afterward).

By stiff neck we mean very little motion of the head. It actually requires work to keep the neck in alignment with the body during the butterfly and also to move it forward and downward. This is more about the effect of the motion of the head, which weighs about 11 or 12 pounds.

So where do we get the rotational sensor to hook up to the fishing reel to make the "velocity meter", and is that real time analysis from software, or did you just run some excel plots? Frankly I'm a little skeptical about this advice which comes off like a prescription for every fly swimmer. The fact is that the leg is a lever and in that second kick, it is generating an angular acceleration of the center of mass. By tucking the head, the center of mass moves in, and to conserve the angular momentum, the body must rotate faster. Not everybody has the same rotational geometry in their fly. It's interesting that a lot of fairly successful fly swimmers at the age group level have what I call "whale" body shape, so that their center of mass is relatively non-rotational (and very buoyant). Sure, they are not up there are super-mega-world-class elite, but the point is that you have to qualify what you are observing to the facts of this swimmer's body. Also there is an assumption here that the engine can run at maximum rev's in low gear for an entire race without blowing a gasket. That is a HUGE assumption. Nobody uses first gear for an entire bike race. So if you train on maximum acceleration mode all the time, and they you screw up your back or neck, what good is it?

Our Pressure Meter technology which measures body rotational speed (and distance), along with the pressure on the front and back of the hand, can be used in conjunction with the Velocity meter Technology, which measures velocity, acceleration and deceleration....all in real time, synched to video. We test over several strokes at race speed which is about 100 meter race speed. The speed of body rotation couples with the propulsion of the pulling hand or kicking feet to augment the propulsion.

We like to keep the chin tucked on the non-breathing strokes. When the head is submerged even by a fraction under the surface, you completely eliminate frontal-drag.

The chin should come off the chest some on the non-breathing strokes, simply because you will get more propulsion from the arms by arching (extending) the lower back. Just don't come off too far.

Reducing that 45 angle versus drag is one parameter. However i speculate that the flatter you become the harder it is to get the core and hence body to push on the arms. So by going to flat it forces you to have to use more arm/shoulder than body core to generate power so thats a negative compromise. Look at milaks angle underwater. He looks flat above but on the rare underwaters hes not. You can check but i think he was very 45. But you can see the drive coming from the body core and emanating out into the arms and legs. I think the key is the timing to get the whipping counter between the second kick and the arm pull through. One is squeezing against the other. The whole body is pushing on the arms and the kick helping that push/squeeze. And the squeeze between the 2 is the power generator. But they have to coincide at termination. And it starts by feeling the legs acting as a point of balance before the whip Phelps coach states it clearly in his vid and phelps demonstrates it beautiful under water. Iv probabaly confused everyone There is 1000 details but i think the easiest way is to get the big concept correct, and then the little details the swimmer has to figure out with feel through repetition.

The chin should get tucked down to near (not to) the chest during the arm recovery. After the hands are in the water, at the completion of the second down kick, the chest presses downward with the hip flexion and the chin comes off the chest. When it elevates completely depends on the technique of early breath or late breath butterfly.

This is an excellent video Gary - really brilliant! Your objective findings are exactly what I've been coaching from a more subjective / empirical basis with the younger kids that I've been fortunate enough to voluntary work with at the local school here in Perth, Australia. It's very interesting to note, that of all the examples I use of great butterflyers who use the technique your results point towards are "correct" in most cases (and also fit the improvements I'm able to generate with the kids), the only anomaly I've really found and struggled to account for is the great Michael Phelps - wondering if you had any insight on that? The other interesting note to point out here is that what Gary has been able to show objectively is also the same movement pattern that you can see Adam Peaty demonstrate so well in the breaststroke which we affectionately refer to with the kids as the "Adam Peaty head-butt". Anyway, love what you're doing and hope we can maybe meet at some point down the line!

Thank you. You guys do great stuff as well. I am not quite certain why so many people think that Phelps did not use his head in fly, but he did. He extends the neck almost fully for the breath and then flexes it very near his chest on the way down. Phelps is an 'early breath' butterflyer, as opposed to Joseph Schooling and Jack Conger (late breath), and seemed to hold his head above water in the forward position forever....thanks to his strong legs. Yes, and we also teach breaststroke like Peaty and King have demonstrated, using the head as a weapon!

major problem with this. the peak acceleration is with the hydrodynamic position of having the head tucked but if u look at the graph it shows much bigger dips when the head has to move all the way up through the water. causing much more drag than the parallel position that the likes of michael phelps and caeleb dresses use/used. you might also notice that these guys are the fastest flyers in history.

Phelps actually extends and flexes his neck tremendously during his stroke cycle. The trough of the deceleration curves represent the peak of frontal drag and the peak of acceleration curves represent the peaks of propulsion. There is considerably more acceleration with the head movement. When testing frontal drag in the passive position of head down versus in alignment, we found the head tucked down causes 4% less frontal drag with hands at sides and 9% less drag in streamline position.

That is correct. The peak energy from the arms swinging forward along with the shoulders coming down and the head snapping down need to be timed with the peak propulsion from the second down kick. That is what generates more speed.

@@theraceclub thank you sir. can you make a video or share any older one where you have covered the exit tech. in fly. if you look carefully faster flyers exit with pinky first and the palm comes out in a upward direction fully stretched. howevere my son's who is 8 years old his palms comes out pointing doward and shrinked which i find doesnt give him enough swing during the recovery phase and at times it glides over the water towrads the end of the laps. which i find slowing him down. if you have any study regrading that then kindly share. thank you

Does this actually mean that undulating starting point in butterfly kick should be significantly shifted from sternum (bottom of the rib cage) to the upper thoracic/ neck spine area? If this is a case, don't you think that swimmer is actually more susceptible to the some degree of neck injury or strain? In my opinion core muscles are much stronger and flexible than head/neck muscles which now are taking a bigger load in producing that powerful kick. The upper body or chest should move up and down and there must be hip flexion in order to get any up kick propulsion. You just don't want to elevate the upper body too much. You want the head to take on a more exaggerated motion than the upper body. These are non-traumatic motions and will not cause neck injury.

My observation across all strokes, not just Fly, is "all the backwards facing muscles tend to work together." And not in a good way when the back of the neck is tight. A tight neck results in lower back tightness (so arching), then often tight glutes and hamstrings. And since kicking primarily follows the angle of the hips, a curved lower spine can adversely affect kicking. The back of the neck most frequently is the initiating culprit ... the first to act in this cause-and-effect domino-ing of posture issues. I see these reactions in this video. At timestamps 4:04 and 5:44, the back of Amanda's neck is engaged, and we see her lower is back arched. At ts 6:12 when she is bringing her chin closer to her chest, we see much less lower back arch. If we imagined her on dry land standing, she would now have a dancer's great posture ... tall. Think ballerinas. So her entire body is now fitting into a smaller diameter tube as she attacks forward.

Great observations/perspective Lorin, I'd like to add that lower back arch isn't necessarily a bad thing. For example, in the case of the butterfly, if an athlete has good mobility in their lower back, a greater arch (during recovery) should actually allow them to take less drag forces during their breath because they're able to keep their feet more "in-line" with their body vortex. But in this case, at the very end of the recovery, the "ballerina" or "small tube" analogy works great, because this position is happening immediately after peak acceleration (e.g. when we want to have as little drag as possible). I can do a fly 25m in 12 Sec. The next 25m would be endurance and maintaining breath. Without taking a breath you a faster. Without changing the body curve much you are consistently hitting the target every stroke

Yes SR is faster without breathing. Speed is about the same with and without the breath when SR is same (SR is stroke rate).

The first down kick should occur during the pull when the hands are near the belly button. The second down kick should occur exactly when the hands enter the water.

Yes. We believe that the head in breaststroke snapping down can provide powerful coupling energy for the kick

Having a low breath will help from a drag perspective,. The timing & the speed with which you tuck your chin after the breath will be important from a coupling perspective! Hope that answers your question!

How do you keep from tiring quickly when swimming fly? When I swim a 100 I get really tired and my stroke falls apart at the final 8 meters. I’m probably just out of shape because I have been able to hold it and get a 1:14 but when I lose it my time drops to around 1:20. Any advice?

Work on your legs, Aidan. The legs will keep you going in fly. Without them, you are a sinking ship. Also try not to over-elevate the shoulders for the breath. Let your neck do the lifting.

I think it is a good position to have whether taking the breath or not, though the chin will lift off the chest some during the underwater pull for greater propulsion. We found 4% less drag with the chin tucked down vs off the chest in alignment with the body.

The chin on the surface during the breath and then tucked to the chest after the breath yields significantly higher results in most swimmers we test. This was the case with National Champ Amanda Kendall as well, and is the fly she uses now.

@@theraceclub Many thanks ...even in my own geriatric well past my sell by date 58 years old (... older I as better I used to be) breaststroke I find being consciously still with the head and eyes down rather uncomfortable and just letting the neck loosen is much more comfortable and makes me feel more fluid. Lochte and Phelps and Le Clos all seem to look forwards in Fly on the breath and use the head as a driving force down. I do some coaching as a Total Immersion coach and am not dealing with elites but one day would love to come out and watch you work for a week if that were a possibility? I am UK based.

We charge a camp fee for coaches to attend our camp, unless they are accompanying a paying swimmer. We also include 1 hr of consultation at the end of the camp to answer any and all coach's questions. You can also attend as a Masters swimmer and learn from being in the water.

What about breathing every stroke vs. every other? Phelps was an every stroke guy. My coach forced me to breath every other, and I hated the oxygen debt it created.

Elite men tend to breath every cycle while most elite women breath every other. The difference is in the rate of lactate production, which is greater in males. Of note, Sara Sjostrom breathes every other for the first 30 meters and then every cycle all the rest of her 100 meters. I prefer the oxygen as well, with a lower profile breath

oh wow, been swimming butterfly for years not never knew this. In fact, always thought the opposite was true since our coach sometimes told us to swim while holding a tennis ball under our chin thus restricting the movement. When I push out my chin, I feel like the back of my head is pushing my body down creating some tension around my neck but not moving it feels more relaxing and alined with my spine

There is less work involved in holding a 'still' head position than by moving it from one extreme position to another (flexion to extension). We have found that you will accelerate faster on the second down kick by moving the head quickly.

Keep pushing the hands straight backwards as long as possible. Then release the hands with relaxed wrists and little fingers upward to reduce drag.

What about 50 fly sprints when you are not breathing at all? Do you have to snap the head to your chest in that case?

Good question! If you aren't breathing you want to leave your head submerged in order to reduce surface drag. If you decide to breathe make sure you're snapping your head down!

You are right. However, we have found a similar result in other swimmers we have tested. If you fund a research project for us, we will test as many as you can afford for good statistical analysis.

You need to breathe more in the 200 fly, less in the100 fly and very little or none in the 50 fly.
