Great radio. Wish I could of gotten my hands on one. Ordered two of the Galaxy 979's. Sent them both back. They were defective from the factory. Needed a smaller chassis for my 27 year old car. Found one finally, but no SSB. It will be the next radio you do for me, Matt. 👊👊😑🦗

@@TheRadioGarage The 979's within three days started garbling on transmit. Within a week they would no longer receive. ☹ Maybe the later "F" model was better. I just gave up on them. Get your self caught up. We will go from there. 👌😑🦗

@The Radio Garage In the past when I used my Palomar Elite 250, I received good reports on SSB. After I purchased a Palomar Elite 500, the reports came back that I sounded compressed, scratchy. I ran a two-tone test into the radio alone first and then through the amp. The radio was clean but the amp showed severe crossover distortion. After reviewing the schematic, I came to realize that the so-called "AB-1" bias in that design, in my opinion, would not work. For the most part, the base of the SD1446's was tied to ground (Class C). I took the amp apart and rewired it. Now when I key, I have ~0.7 volts on the base. Repeating the two-tone test, the amp is now linear without distortion. The waveform resembles that of the radio alone and the radio reports are all positive. Since that recent fix, I've now looked at every amp I own (6).

Yes most all the palomar amps had the circuit there for the bias but they used to take run the wire off the choke to ground. So that used to be a simple fix of moving one wire. The ssb delay worked either way so folks thought it was biased. As you saw the amp was not designed really well for distortion on a scope. The same thing still applies to the amps that are currently being made/built whether it be an add-on like the rfx or a stand alone. They are tuned/designed exclusively for the watt meter. The rfx is a mosfet which adds additional elements that transistor pill style amps don't suffer from. I hope you see what I'm trying to say with this, basically these units are not designed to be linear even though they should be, but I at least try my best to make sure everything is as clean and distortion free as possible. I don't have time though to re-design amps, nor should I have to. Thank you for your input as I see it as valuable information. 73s 👋

About time a cobra 148, grant xl replacement radio looks nice. As a radio without rfx kit on it. Does it do more than 12 watts tuned alc adjusted open ? Does it get above & below the 40 channels ?
