I used to work on modifying single sideband CB radios. I'd make 'em go upstairs by cutting a trace on the phase locked loop radios. I'd then broadband the oscillator. On my base station I had it hooked up to my Fluke frequency counter and had a tuning wand stuck through a hole I drilled in the case so I could swing the oscillator down or up depending where I wanted to go with the transceiver. I'd swing it up to go upstairs above the 40 channel usually just below the 2 meter Ham band. Up there I'd talk to a lot of Ham radio operators. I'd swing the oscillator the other direction if I wanted to go below channel 1 on the CB. I really had a good time back during the 80's working on CB radios for folks. Then I started working on television sets. Sold all my gear when I moved and now no longer do electronics. That's why I feed off of others' electronics work. Love yer videos.

I had a ham friend give me an RCI 2950 10 meter transceiver with intermittent display issues. When I got home and opened up the unit, I noticed there was no harness, ribbon cabling or hardwired cabling going from the display board to the main board. Instead there was a whole row of thin fingers that passed through holes on the mainboard, just passing through and if they made contact fine, if not, no display. So I removed the display unit and carefully slightly bent each finger and then reinserted it back through those holes as I reinstalled the display unit. Turned the radio and it worked just like a charm. That was 10 years ago and the darn thing is still kicking. Just took a little torquing the copper. Thanks for this repair. It reminded me of my own above mentioned experience.

Thanks, it is good to see a repair last for a decade. Glad that worked out for you. Some just takes a little tweaking while others make you pull your hair out lol. Good job on the 2950. I have one somewhere in the shop I need to repair one day. Thanks for sharing yours.

Good video Buddy. I just finished restoring and calibrating a Heathkit IM-28 VTVM, looks exactly the same as those three you have, so I'm not sure of the difference between all the model numbers. Had to build my own probe for it too. It's a great unit. Yours and Mr. Carlson's videos help a lot with fixing these kinds of test gear, I really appreciate all the knowledge you share.
@TheRadioShop7 жыл бұрын
Not a lot of difference between them if I remember correct. Both are excellent meters. Glad you decided to build your own probe. They are very simple. Glad you like the videos. Paul is a great tech on this stuff I have to agree. Thanks for watching my friend.

I wish all my repair failures were that good LOL. I would be very surprised to find out that little wire whisker was NOT the cause of the problem. Wow, I gotta get a couple of friends like Mike LOL. That is an awesome care package. I used to have that same Heathkit VTVM but it got destroyed when I moved from St Louis to Arkansas. It is a real gem. Good job on the video and repair Buddy. Thank you for sharing it with us. 73 de K7RMJ Frank

Hello Buddy well nice story on the radio. Mike is a top friend and it's always interesting to see what he sends you. Although I think he could have sent 2 boxes and saved people from possible hernias.LOL I just bought a BK DYNAMATIC 375 in excellent condition but not working so have dismantled and am waiting for new valves. Then will see what else is wrong have already tested the meter and it's fine. Will let you know the outcome. Cheers mate.

As long as the meter and transformer is fine should be a snap to fix. Will be a nice bit of gear to any bench. Would like to see before and after pics if possible. Yes Mike is a true friend. Good luck on the rebuild.

That's at least two unhappy FedEx men. Yours and mine. :-) I definitely give them a workout. You made all that new bench space and I just had to help fill in those empty holes. Can never have to many meters. Just hope the bench doesn't collapse due to overload. Don't you hate radios when they fix themselves. That drives me nuts when that happens because I know eventually the fault will return. But like you say if it ain't broke you can't fix it.

Reminds me of our beloved black lab (SK) who wasn't doing well and the vet did some exploratory abdominal surgery but didn't find anything wrong...dog immediately returned to normal so I asked the vet what she thought was wrong and she said she didn't know but figured she had simply "...let the bad air out"; guess radios may have the same thing happen!

I have an HTX-100 that is doing the same thing and was wondering if you still are working on those rigs . I have tallked all around the world with that radio running 25 watts with an inverted V dipole in a pine tree back in the early 90's. If you could please help me let me know and ill email you. This radio has sentimental value and I'd really like to see it running again.

Yep, the wire shorting the switch would of been it, if only someone else had been more careful when they worked inside it and didn't leave that in there! Mind you, I have seen big solder splashes inside brand new Cobra 29's, straight from the factory.

@TheRadioShop6 жыл бұрын
Capacitors act like batteries. They store energy. By shorting certain pins on the micro you discharge these internal capacitors. This way any garbage left in the micro is removed.

Well, I don't have to worry about my HTX that needed finals, or the TS440 with the occasional dot problem now. I had a house fire back at the end of march and lost all my test equipment and my radios. I have been replacing my test equipment and I replaced the ts440 with a nice Yaesu ft-980. I lost 12 file cabinets of factory service manuals, but I did save all the Sams photofacts. I had good insurance though and it has been somewhat fun shopping for new equipment.
@TheRadioShop7 жыл бұрын
Darn Bill hate to hear about the loss. I do hope all goes well. Somethings just cannot be replaced my friend.
@billrenfro97987 жыл бұрын
On the plus side, we get essentially a new house inside, and I get all new test equipment and radio equipment. Also get new furniture, appliances, and clothes. Guess I will not complain about those insurance premiums again. I had full replacement cost coverage and coverage to pay for my rental house while they rebuild mine. Was just thinking that if I had an antenna tuner and a battery, I could go sit on my deck and work field day with the FT-980. I may give that some thought, it might be fun. I am also going to get a new (to me) VHF/UHF base radio, and a new dual band handheld. I am looking at a Yaesu FT-65.

I wonder if you are into "metrology?" Standards and such... you have so many meters and instruments which are just begging for calibration. HONEST calibration, no problems because you have standardized and calibrated sources... right? Your connectors are all standard field types... no lab or better (metrology level) connectors. See the video from The Signal Source on connector types. Oy vey. LOL Not one standard in all your videos. Yikes.
@TheRadioShop5 жыл бұрын
Yes I have many standards including GPS standards. However frequencies below 30 MHz field connectors are just fine. I am not running a "Lab" here and not in the business to service commercial equipment. Just a hobby since I quit General electric and EF Johnson companies as a service tech. My newer signal generators and spectrum analyzers (which are less than two years old) are all up to date from the manufacture. Now when working with higher frequencies and public service equipment standards are a MUST and why I do not service such equipment any longer. In my current job of 25 years as a quality engineer metrology is something we have to take seriously. Good points Bruce.
