@@Ewoonation Bingo. My ex-wife was (and still is) like that. We were broke the entire time we were married because she wanted to be reckless and I wanted to make her happy. Fast forward to four years post-divorce ... I'm a few months away from debt freedom while she's tripled her debt, not including the house she bought and can't afford. I know the kind of future I want and plan for it. She's still paycheck to paycheck.

yeah I'd say leave her in the dust. s*** testing before a marriage is a sure sign of a problem when you're married. plus this guy seriously needs to go out and get a trade or drive truck or something to save money to establish himself. 20 grand a year is basically welfare poverty money. Which makes me wonder if they're living off the system and he's just doing a maintenance job.

Counter point, I had the exact same problem where my wife didn’t like Dave Ramsey’s method but she still worked with me to create a budget that is healthy where we pay off debt and save money every month. So you don’t have to both agree on a financial program but you both should agree on a financial plan.

But recently I combined the idea of Dave's zero-based budget plus paying all bills In the beginning of the month, and it's working out great so far. In our specific case we get paid off weeks.

This is a communication issue. He doesn’t even know what her real problem is. I’m a stan of the baby steps but I know it’s possible to win with the money with slight variations because there are testimonies everywhere. Don’t let The baby steps be the hill you die on if you can come together on what your real goals are. Also, he slipped in there that the income was $20,000...is that projected household (I hope not) but even just for the guy, that will eventually be an income issue. Maybe she doesn’t see the route to get out of debt past the lack of current resources. There’s so much that only having one side of this conversation just can’t get through, but when they start having the conversation and learning about what is really the root of the issue, they can decide if this is where they cut their losses.

When I approached my wife about Dave she told me it was ridiculous and pointless. We were just going to be broke. It was impossible for us. It’s just the way it is. We had about 40k in consumer debt plus the mortgage and no money. I pleaded with her to give it a try. Just do it for me, if it doesn’t work we can go back. She finally broke down. Fast forward only four years. We just bought a house twice the size of our old one(impossible), have no debt besides the mortgage(impossible). Three paid off vehicles and a paid off Harley and we inverted our 40k debt into a 40k of emergency and sinking funds. After about two months she completely changed her tune and today she keeps me in check. It works. There is no question. Our household income increased about 60k as well. It motivates you on all sides. And of course we are in filling those 401s.

I think part of what would help her, would him leading by example. Him starting out at gazelle intense. Him knocking out his debt and getting to Baby Step 3. She knows him in the now, knows the lazy side and the debt side. By him showing out and going gazelle intense, it shows her that she doesn’t know him all the way, and seeing his fire could spark a fire in her too.

Had a similar onboarding problem. I chose to lead by example and start dealing with my own debt transparently. Signed up for FPU and she came along (likes to socialize). Sell the dream, not the chore. Working out so far; we are at BS3B and BS2.

Because usually women will try to keep the act up until they're married.. And that's a lot of motivation these days to never put a ring on a woman's finger. They need to change the laws and give some better asset protection to incentivize more men to want to get married.

medical debt sucks, one of my biggest financial fears, but not living paycheck to paycheck is fairly simple especially if one doesn't have kids. Spend less, earn more. Something being Simple doesn't necessitate that it be easy btw

I may not agree 100% with his approach, but it is a great foundation for people new to all this. Me and my wife are very different people when it comes to money, I am a spender and she is a saver but we are both on the same page when it comes to our financial goals. You need to make sure you are both on the same page with your goals or you will never be able to design a plan to reach them, whether that is the Dave Ramsey plan or a completely different one does not matter if you are not on the same page.

The only difference I've had is I'd rather take 10-20% longer than put 100% effort and not have a life or eat poor quality food that leads to higher medical expenses. Dave's advise still helps to weigh pros and cons and decision making.
