My wife was a sahm in the downtown area of a major city. The number of childcare requests she got were truly incredible. Unfortunately alot of people (especially family) thought that childcare was not a big deal and she should be willing to help out for free/cheap, and she lost 'friends' over it. I feel for the young people trying to find good, affordable reliable childcare...its a weird dynamic out there.

I’m a nanny and have been in childcare over 25 years. It’s amazing to me people complain about the cost of childcare. You have to remember the responsibility the nanny has. I’m literally raising your child. I have to meet their physical and emotional needs. I have the responsibility of the most priceless possession you have. You can replace everything in your life, but the people you love. I carry this in my heart everyday. It’s an investment in your child to provide great childcare. PS as a nanny I would still recommend if at all possible one parent be home with their child. They will be in school faster then you think. I love the kids I care for and they love me, but nothing can take the place of a parent.

Same here in the SF Bay Area, cost even more here. Fortunately I make a good income and bought our home and rentals when they were cheap. So my wife is a stay home mom since we got married 17 years ago. For young couples starting now, it is not easy.

We are in the DC area and day care costs are unbelievable here. For in home day care we pay $1k a month and for a center is over $500/week. A huge chunk of our pay goes to daycare. The sad part is that the teachers don’t get pay much at all, the centers charge the parents but their teachers usually get minimum wage. Sad.

It takes compromise and sacrifice. I am a teacher and worked two very full days a week while my husband was in home office on my work days. This functioned well for us and I felt like I had the best of both worlds: a lot of quality time with my child and small contribution to our household income. Of course we had to make some material and budget sacrifices but it was worth it. This was a 'season' and thankfully allowed us to save the funds we now need for private school :)

Most women in my family are like that. They planned with savings/investments and lived within means.. Didn't want strangers raising their kids and missing out on important things. My oldest sister was a RN fortunate to work from home handling insurance,patients, and whatnot for a group of doctors. Two of my sisters and seven nieces homeschool. When they are old enough myself or others in family take some of them off their hands for a few days or weeks during summer.

It's always funny to me when people talk about cheaper options for childcare yet neglect to touch on the safety of the child, and the cleanliness of the environment in which you are planning on putting them in. Whenever you cut costs, one of those two things are always going to come with the cut. Not to mention you will lose more work hours carrying for a sick kid because of a dirty day. Care for an unkept stranger's house.

So true, us parents are just trying to have kids. The government invests money in public schools, why don’t they invest in quality childcare? When my wife and I had our first child we weren't making very much money, so if she worked all her income would basically go to daycare. We thought that was dumb to have her work to pay some stranger to look after our kids. So what we did is get different shifts. I worked from 8-5 and when I got home she would work from 6-midnight. It was difficult, but we did what we had to do at the time.

As a former daycare worker, do everything you possibly can to keep your kids out of daycare. Sell you home, cut back, sell your car. Even the best childcare centers have major issues and if you knew what happened behind closed doors you’d never send your kids to one.

Yup. I'm a nanny and I also substitute in daycares. Especially for kids under 3, I see so many issues. Most places are feeding choke hazard foods like raw carrots and popcorn to kids under 3. The ratios for those younger ages are just bonkers. I've seen a child get smacked and not for hurting another child, but for fidgeting with the tray on the highchair. It was annoying. The child was buckling in so I just took the tray off. The lead teacher put it back and yelled at the child for fidgeting with it and then eventually smacked her for it. It was a 1 year old. No, they can't just learn to stop that at that age. Their learning needs to be focused on walking and talking at that age.

I'm a day care worker too and used to work in an elementary school. I've witnessed children being abused by teachers and parents don't see it. My children stay home with me. I live off my husband's paycheck which is only 18,000 a year. I'd rather be poor then let someone hurt my children.

Great session. REALLY appreciate the messaging around options. That is the key that we as parents are not stuck. Life is NOT the same with kids involved, and when they are young as long as the options are all safe, making a few changes (or not if you don't have to!) is all good. Work life will tend to not appreciate all you parents for what you do so let me just say here that you are appreciated! I have worked as a nanny. I'm currently substituting at local daycares. I'm up to 5 daycares that I'm subbing at. I'm working on signing up for more. A proper nanny charges more than regular rate to be shared between multiple families. It's usually each family paying 2/3 of their rate per family for two families, but maybe half their rate for each of 3 families. I've seen it work well done with neighbors. One reason why a nanny share is favorable to a daycare is that you can make sure the ratios are kept down below your state minimums. My state allows up to 6 kids under 2 to one caregiver. This ratio is bonkers. My state is all about separating out the ages. I think mixed age childcare is beneficial to everyone. Older kids can help by handing stuff to a caregiver who is working with a smaller child. A proper nanny should know childcare. Even daycares that are higher end, usually the staff do not have a strong background in child development. A lot of the training is focused on setting up "centers" or themed play areas within the daycare.

It's painful to allow someone else care for your kids. Especially when one gets hurt in the process. You think you know people well enough, then something happens. It's best to care for your own children to care and protect them better. Just my experience.

When they are infants/toddlers, and they get hurt or injured, you only have the word of the provider to tell you what happened, especially if no cameras caught it. It takes a lot of trust, and sometimes the cost of day care doesn't always equate to good care.

Having a one income household is a good way to combat childcare prices, but it doesn't just happen. My wife and I paid off all our debts, didn't upgrade in house and made the best of the used cars we had that are paid off. Then we were able to do it. Now she can work side hustles/online work to get extra money if we need it. We obviously don't make as much as a 2 income household even with their child care costs.

I worked for a community action program run daycares and preschools. They offered scholarships and help to lower income families. However, some of their full time staff could not receive a discount and therefore had to send their children to other less satisfactory daycares. They were unable to afford the cost yet " made too much money ". Those that were single and could qualify for the low income were dragged through hoops to do their application which could not be administered by someone they knew or worked with. So, they Scrambled to find someone in the agency - so so sad in both scenarios

I’ve always heard about the situation where mothers and parents will shame other mothers or parents for raising their children differently than them, although I’ve never experienced the shame from someone else in person. Particularly around the breastfeeding/bottle feeding ‘debate’ and the childcare ‘debate’…and then I read the comments here and I can see it so plainly. Daycare is expensive. My wife and I paid $2300 a month for childcare in New Jersey (right outside of NYC). We eventually moved to Texas (where everything is way less expensive) and got it down to $1200 a month for Pre-K until she started Kindergarten this year. 👍

Once the kids are in school, there are a ton of in-school events that take place during the day and special activities kid can sign up for right after school. No one with a full time job will be able to accommodate for it all if any. Most of the kids in my daughter's gifted class have either a sahp or a retired grandparent nearby. And this is for school aged children!

That's why you plan for children. We waited for six years after we were married before having kids. We were no longer broke and were better situated financially. We also used in-home daycare - much cheaper than daycare centers and nannies.

I don't hear anyone arguing for one parent to stay home during the formative years here......if it's 20%.....that's more like 40%+ of the lower wage earner in that equation. Probably because most individuals don’t earn enough of a single income to support more than one person, which is why it takes both spouses’ incomes with strict budgeting to support a family. Also, when you leave the workforce, it can be VERY difficult to rejoin it. Companies aren’t as likely to consider a candidate who hasn’t been working for a few years

I’m sad to say I had a much stronger bond with the the grandma who was home. I learned important things from my working, grandma, though, and it’s largely due to her lessons about saving and investing that I have achieved FI.

My wife and I have a 1 year old , no child care , she gets to work around 6am till noon-2pm while I'm at home , then I work 4-5, pm to 10at night a couple days then 4-5 till 12-1am a few days a week ...we make sure were off at least one day each week together most of the time its 2 days We like the routine , were around each other a good amount of time as well

Many if not most are single parents. There's also retirement to think about; moms will have an impoverished old age if they don't work. And, for the past fifty or sixty years, we've been educating girls. If we really think they all should be housewives there's no sense in educating them. If we send girls through school, the expectation logically would be that they would use it.

Add in the fact that parenthood tends to trigger a drop in marital satisfaction and increased marital conflict.....divorce is common and the two times it is most likely are just after having kids and then after the kids are grown. So yeah, nearly half of all mothers are single at the get-go, and many more become single not too long after, you end up with a lot of single parent households.

From first grade they told me what to do to survive gave me a watch told me this is what time you walk to the bus stop what time the bus should get there make sure to lock the door and gave me lunch when they remembered. I think it makes a lot of sense for mom to stay home and make home made foods and garage sale stuff and do a side job for a few hours while dad's home vs. both parents working.

Why a mom cannot do both? Raise a kid and work? Is not like the kids will be at school all day and they Can learn a lot at school too as well at home. Then, when kids go to regular school and there is a gap for a woman who used to stay at home, to find a good job is an issue. It’s easy to say to a woman: stay at home and sacrifice that part of yourself too and not being emphatic
