Complains about living paycheck to paycheck. Bought a new home while on MLA (no mention of whether she collected short-term disability insurance). Bought an expensive car while laid off. Back to work with a mountain of debt but still living in a dream world where she has a live-in nanny and not even considering that as a way to cut expenses. Right at the end, you can hear in her voice that she's not ready to do what needs to be done.

Too many people like to keep up appearances. Need to look good to others. I keep my paid off car and hardly ever buy new clothes (I go to thrift stores first). No paid streaming services or cable. I only go on a couple of trips a year (all domestic) that save up for. But at the end of the month, I am on track with my financial goals and that's what matters.

Assuming they maximize both their 401k’s, their take home pay should be around $15k after taxes. That should be plenty to live comfortably but their income decreased significantly so they need to make some big changes. They need to stop contributing and payoff those debts. One parent needs to stay home and care for the kids. Besides, why have kids then not raise your own kids? Especially if you have the ability and resources to do it? Blows my mind.

We are going from $110k to $310k. After the first of the year. We've been living on a 45k budget. Kicking out a bunch of cash for my wife's nursing schooling. Now she graduates the first week of January. We are moving to a place with LOWER cost of living. Locked into a lease on a 4 bedroom twin house for $1k a month Since houses are so overpriced, we are going to cash flow buying land, and building our own place. Goal is 100% debt free and in our new house by this time next year. Then we can bank $150k a year for retirement. Maybe save to start building an upgraded house. Especially if house prices stay high. Could make $500k tax free selling our first primary residence using the Section 121 Exclusion.

In most states the average cost of daycare for 5 days a week is 1k a month per child (these guys have 5 kids under 5), and if they both work full time then they have to have daycare. Knowing this and then to suggest that this family can set a budget of 5k a month is silly. I understand they made some mistakes and they need to sell cars and cut a lot of stuff out but lets give them some real workable advice, hopefully the budget app can do that for them and at their income they will be fine.
