Unfortunately if you live in a city like I do, Atlanta, image is everything. It's not easy counting Cars older than 5 years unless you go to heavy immigrant part of the city, like fresh arrivals. Anything that isn't prep or metro is instantly labeled as white trash. Unless you are fine with social isolation, living lean is hard. I see ppl taking taking walks after work in dress shoes. That's how bad it is

Daniel B "Unless you are fine with social isolation, living lean is hard" Why would you ever in a million years want socialize with folks who look down on you for such things? While I believe you that the 'main' culture is like that, surely there are plenty of like-minded folks such as yourself there as well. See if you can find any DR facebook groups in your area, or a church that offers FPU (where others would be interested in living in a financially responsible manner). Also check your local library for events/groups that may interest you and see what type of folk you might meet there.

Isn't it funny how the child who gets taken care of by getting the house has nothing to offer when when the parent needs help? My question is why doesn't the mother live in the house with the other daughter? That would eliminate the rent payment. I so feel sorry for this woman! I would love a follow-up on this story.

Great advice on this one. Even just stopping payments on Mom's student loans will solve most of the caller's problems. As Dave says, when Mom passes on, her debt will die with her. Worst case scenario, Mom will lose the worthless house she only "owns" on paper, which has no equity in it anyway. The caller sounded doubtful at the end, but I hope she did take his advice.

I really am afraid of this happening to my parents. Both in their upper 60's and almost no retirement funds to rely on besides Social Security. Like Dave has said in the past, I have tried to change my family tree when it comes to finances, but the parents not so much.

When the people Mom owes calls let them know she has a home with 10,000 in equity that will be foreclosed on soon because Mom is no longer able to care for herself or that home. Give them the address and wish them luck. The other daughter is on the deed but not the mortgage so let the collector's take care of that problem for her by securing a lien on the property.

The older I get, the more thankful I am that my parents are financially responsible who taught me well. They introduced me to Dave as a kid, from that I introduced my wife to it and we’ve been able to kill it as a couple using Dave’s plan. Thank God for great parents and Dave Ramsey.

Brianna CC Supposedly they are forgiven after like 15 years or something. The student loan people told me that. It could change at any time but that’s what they told me. Also, if you’re a public servant or teacher they are forgiven after 10 years.

I've been divorced for about 16 years now. I've spent that time raising a daughter, paying off a home, saving for retirement, etc. Now that I'm in a position to date again, it is amazing how many boomers are broke, sliding into retirement, living in houses with big mortgages, car loans, eating at restaurants often, etc., etc. Crazy..

When Dave mentions the 4 essentials food, clothing, shelter & transportation shouldn’t there be a 5th category for medicine/health? This probably wouldn’t apply to a healthy 20-something but for the mother with possibly early stage dementia I would think this should be a critical need.

We really need to have some kind of mandatory testing for driving after a certain age. I know so many people over 70 who have no business being behind the wheel of a car and they act like children when you mention it to them.
