1. I would have asked if she met her husband there? If so, that should temper her being upset about goingbthere. 2. I would have told her she needs to be honest with her mom about how she feels. Letting those feelings fester will grow worse even if she does pay iff the debts. Unresolved anger is very harmful. Assuming they are both Christians, follow Matthew 18.

perhaps, but if her mom coerced her to enrolling in a college she didn't want to, by offering to pay the costs, and now renegs on that is a broken promise made worse by the fact that those costs were more expensive than what the caller actually wanted to do. Yeah, I'd be resentful about it too and I'm not sure there is a flip side of the coin that would change that.

@johnmartin46413 жыл бұрын
That wasn’t the agreement. The caller wanted to go to a cheaper school, but agreed to go where the mom wanted her to under the condition that the mom would pay for it. That’s the only reason she borrowed the money. Sue the con artist mom for fraud and breach of a verbal contract.

Wow thats pretty messed up if you really think about it. Mom said only way im paying for your college is if you go to this crazy expensive one. Funny thing mom is now not wanting to pay for it a couple of payments in. (a few years still counts as a couple of payments in the grand scheme of things) The daughter should've just refused having her mom pay and did it on her own. She'd be in less debt now. I mean thats obvious to us but for people out there in the future dont accept someone else paying your debt because it will never end well. My mom helped me with a few thousand and said i didn't need to pay it back and she constantly brings it up even though i do help her with money. The only way I'd ever get her to not bring it up is if i give it to her all in one payment.

That loan was signed under the basis of fraud. That is a legitimate excuse for not paying. The law says so. She only signed the loan because her mother lied and committed fraud. Her mother agreed to pay. That’s the only reason she agreed to sign the loan. She needs to sue her lying, worthless, con artist mother for fraud and breach of a verbal contract. That will take the responsibility away from the caller and force her mother to pay like she agreed to and like any decent parent would.

Dave never asked whose name the loans were in. Likely both the mom and daughter's names are on the loans and they are both responsible for it.

After high school my grandparents offered to pay my college tuition and a monthly allowance if I attended a specific private Christian college... thing is I had applied to and was accepted to several others that had course offerings I was interested in. I discussed it with them and asked if they would still help if I chose a different school, but they didn't offer a dime. They said they talked to their accountant and they would get no tax benefit that way. I love my grandparents deeply and have a good relationship with them, but this soured it pretty badly for me. They tried to convince me it was a gift but it really wasn't.

At least you recognised it. It's can form of manipulation, when there's strings attached, but not always. They're within their rights/boundaries to offer something with conditions. You're within your rights/boundaries to say no. The issue is often we learn these lessons the hard way because we lack life experience.

I feel sorry for her mom because her daughter is so shallow. Just pay your student loan 500 a month. The money will be coming in fine as soon as her husband graduates. Let your mom retire in financial peace.

I don't think this was malice. In reality it's her loans and she needs to pay them. Mom doesn't have the cash for it. Going to college in her mom's day was the road to success. Not so much anymore if you just pick something to pick something.
@hidingzebrablocks56613 жыл бұрын
I'm betting she met her hubby at that school though. She should see the increased cost of that college, opposed to where she wanted to go, as a "finders fee" for meeting her man. Would completely take away any bitterness she holds towards her mum, and towards making the payments herself.

The difference in the quality of responses between Dave and Anthony here shows why I am nervous for the future of the Ramsey Show. Anthony's answer to the caller is very surface level. Indeed, he answers the question asked. But Dave's experience shines here, where he goes deeper into the situation and likely made a difference in this woman's relationship with her mother. If Ramsey Solutions were a public company, and I were an investor, I'd be selling my shares seeing DR's impending retirement.
