dks13827 ...Is that a true statement? You have never wanted to be able to do something to your house that your neighbor is doing? Your car is old and having problems and you just wish you could make enough to get one like your brother just bought? I don’t think it’s really jealousy but a “It would be nice to have that” moment! Most of us want toys or a camper, etc. but we ‘woke’ people know the price is too high! If we are good little savers, we can have all that and pay $!! That’s the way to total Happiness!!! Our problem is: We have the $ and the time (in retirement) but the desire to do what we thought we wanted to do...is gone! The world that we wanted to visit is ‘No More’!

My current vehicle is an SUV crossover, coming up on 8 years old, 75k miles, bought with cash when it was 3 years old, roughly 40k miles. I will likely drive it into the ground though I could get something else with cash. I don't put on many miles each year, so it should last me a good, long while. I love it!

These car dealers are predatory lenders, bottom line. Guy makes 70k per year pays 1k in mortgage and they approved him for a car payment that is likely somewhere in the 700 range??? That's insanity. Stay at home mom getting a brand new car. L.O.L. Mercedes sized car payment on a Chrysler Town n' Country, Motorcycle, and he even mentioned furniture; impressive. Unless that bike is a Harley then it's NOT worth the 10k he owes on it, sportbikes depreciate faster than Chryslers... lol.

The price should not be the only factor when choosing the vehicle you want. A $5000 car can be twice as safe as a $3000 car. Sometimes it’s the other way around. Please consider safety features. Your life depends on it.

It's funny but when I think of debt I always think of a house mortgage. The only time I ever borrowed money it was for my first used car (to use for my first job) and I had it paid off in two years. I would never think to borrow money for furniture, holidays, bikes, caravans or cars. It's just the way I was brought up. It would be very alien to me to have things that I can't afford to buy, on-the-spot, and then have to pay sometimes twice the price in repayments. I am early fifties, own my own home with my husband. We both have nice 2nd hand cars, a big holiday every 5 years, children at private schools...but we still only ever buy 2nd-hand furniture and sometimes clothes. I think it's about wanting some things in life but not needing to have everything.

Something else I just noticed. when the guy is talking about keeping the motorcycle because it's a "cheap payment", he need to change his mindset. It's not about the payment, it about what you're paying overall. These people think in month to month terms of "payments", it's insane.

I owed 14 on my car and it was only worth 10k. I sold the car and got a loan of 4k to pay it off. So now instead of 14k in debt, I'm 4k in debt with only 1 car now. I figured I can save around 400-500 a month with no more car payments and way lower insurance each month. And pay this loan off within a year. Good idea or was it a dumb idea?

My brothers made same mistakes. I've warned them both that they can't afford it both said but it's their dreams car well it turns into nightmare really fast. One got repo other had to sell less than amount owe and they continue making financial mistakes. I guess they haven't got their "sick and tired moment" to make changes. It's saddened me see my family members living paycheck to paycheck when I know they could be doing a lot better.
