jennifer eeehh....I was in the same situation. I’m on my third car in 6 years. First two got totaled due to the other driver. If the at fault person has insurance and you report the incident to yours, you’re entitled to compensation. It’s not a matter of being sue happy, it’s just literally how insurance works in the unfortunate event you have multiple accidents caused by other people. People swear they own the road. Shoot I almost got my new car hit the other day by some nut job speeding across a Target parking lot. Sorry for my rant I’m just throwing it out there that everything isn’t an attempt to scam your way to the bank. I would be VERY irritated if someone made that assumption about me given the fact I could’ve lost my life with my first accident and me loving my second car so much only to have that one taken from me too.

@rosen380 - WRONG. $59,039 was the median (half below that number, half above it) HOUSEHOLD income for 2016. Household is defined as " the income of every resident of that house that is over the age of 15, including wages and salaries, as well as any kind of governmental entitlement such as unemployment insurance, disability payments or child support payments received, along with any personal business, investment, or other recurring sources of income." Syed Jaffer Zaidi Doubt you could do what I've done anyway. I do things differently. It was worth it for me at the time. I had around $10k in savings earning around 16% on 6 month CDs. So I borrowed using my account as collateral with 6% interest rate. I was saving and investing with a Schwab account since 10th grade. It was my dad idea. He didn't want me selling stock or taking from savings to pay for it and was a hassle anyway because there was no internet or online trading and expensive process. So I work full time while going to tech school and getting associates degree. Paid my $120/mo. Car payment for the 18 months and done. No big deal. Glad I did not touch any of the shares of Exxon,Berkshire Hathaway, and others I purchased. These stocks made me a millionaire by 30 with dividend, growth, and compounding and had a six figure career by 30 as well so it all paid off.

25 years ago I had two car loans that totaled $625 per month and I was broke at the end of every month. That was a lot of money back then at it still is today. I finally got fed up so I sold my prized sports car and bought a car for $1750. We were still paying $350 per month for my wife's truck because I wanted to remain on speaking terms with her. About ten years later we rationalized our way into a new truck. Thankfully I'm done with both of them...her...and car payments. All is not lost though because I paid into my retirement the entire time and I'm sitting pretty. Behave yourself and you will live well.

Honestly, this sounds suspect. Two total losses both with huge medical settlements. I think a lot of people use car accidents as a payday. Not saying that's the case here, but something could be off here. That's why car insurance is outrageously expensive. People get in accidents and the first thing they think of is getting a payday. Also isn't the fact they had money left over evidence that it wasn't a legit medical claim? Say you have $1k in medical bills, sure it should get paid, but what's the extra 14 large for?

It's not the interest that even matters. It's the fact that you have an installment loan on a depreciating asset. Imagine you have a cash flow crunch and you need to remove liabilities. Most people are upside down on their cars so the car's loan turns into a boat anchor.

I think the biggest problem is too many people associate a nice car as a status symbol, a sign that we are doing VERY well and that people will be envious of you if they see you driving around in BRAND NEW vehicle. This can be a VERY hard mentality to break, especially if you drive a POS and there I times I even struggle with it myself but it really does come down to will power and understanding the difference between needs and wants. I don't know how many times I looked at a shiny brand new car thinking I could pay it out right no problem only to give myself a reality check on the situation-I ended up buying a house instead and I couldn't be happier especially when I see how much equity my house has built up in such a short amount of time-It's okay to buy toys but the key is to make sure you own them, not the other way around.

Not really, its really easy to "total" a car. They had enough of a case to negotiate a settlement, so whoever is responsible didn't want to take it to court and have a judge determine the damages. They owe money on the cars, which means they didn't have enough to just buy it outright. Its not that complicated to understand how this could happen.

Dave hits the nail on the head regarding the amount tied up in depreciating "assets". Buuut....assuming you have good credit its even worse to pay cash for them. If you can borrow for less than 4% simple interest and earn north of 8% compound in a cheap indexed fund why on gods green earth would you tie up cash that should be working for you to "own" a depreciating asset out right?

I drive a brand new vehicle, and yes I have a payment, and yes I will pay it off early. I put 10K down (equity from my trade), and I feel safer having a new vehicle knowing it is VERY unlikely to leave me stranded on the road at night or during a snow storm etc. You pay no matter what! If you buy a "hooptie" you are paying for repairs, and in some cases if you add the repairs up, cost of rental if needed, and your time it equates to a car payment. I have news for folks, a "newer" used car with low miles cost nearly the same as you could get the same vehicle brand new!
